In This Video, I constructed a greenhouse with 22 PVC Pipes, 4 by 4's, 2 by 4s and plastic! The greenhouse is 20 Feet by 12 feet. Now that the structure is built on the outside, the Geothermal Digging portion will be an ongoing winter project. I hope you enjoy the building of the greenhouse and may it inspire you to build one yourself! At the end of the video I'll have a materials list that you can look at to get you started on most everything that you'll need to build a greenhouse like Mine!
If you want to save time, and are building greenhouse roughly the same size, here is the link for the

Hate to burst your bubble so to speak... but a Greenhouse, (glass-house or hot-house) is covered in glass. You could have also used double 6mm plastic and used 2 small fans to circulate air between the layers of plastic which would also help to keep heat inside or slow heat loss in extremely cold nights.

It will also add thermal mass that will release its heat overnight; particularly useful in cooler months. I'd also remove that H20 tank, locating it outside & run a pipe with tap setup in through the paneled end and possibly try to work out how to harvest as much H20 off of the greenhouse roof, channeling it into the H20 tank for storage and later use. Full marks to Steve for trying but this project could've still remained an inexpensive one but with a bit more thought having gone into the planning process in order to make it a more efficient greenhouse overall. I hope that he's used a silicon sealant wherever he's punctured the envelope by screwing wood to the uPVC ribs through the poly tunnel sheathing or he's going to get algae and mold building up on the inside as moisture penetrates. Wish him all the best anyway.

I like using the 90 degree joints at the apex, as it gives more usable space than the single pipe arch design. Looks like a nice build. When you staple to the plastic, you might want to use nylon batten tape to keep the plastic from ripping away from the staples. I thought I was a glutton for digging punishment, but you have me beat with the 8 ft hole!

@@stevejacobson8958 That's fantastic. I have always been interested in digging a root cellar. It seems reasonable that if the root cellar has a similar volume to a greenhouse, that you could simply exchange air between the root cellar and greenhouse. You might want to insulate the root cellar down to the frost line. I think you would like some of the stuff on my channel. Here's a description of "greenhouse 2.0" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJaTn4uEa7upn8U). I posted performance results for the geothermal and compost heating systems in two separate videos (see end screen of the video for links).

This is everything you want, but a geothermal greenhouse ! :) . First, if you have condensation on the plastic, say bye bye to heat, that layer of water will throw all your heat out. Second, if it's cold, make it a double layer, with very few air currents in between the layers, so you'll keep the heat inside. Third, but the most important, geothermal it's a clear term by itself, and you didn't even dug to have the greenhouse half sunken, which would've been a great thing to do. So, my advice, before posting again about building anything with "thermal" in title, study a little bit of thermodynamics, fluid and gas mechanics and maybe something specific about air currents. Good luck !

I used to build green houses, I see 2 flaws 1) Walls/roof are too flexible , they will collapse under snow or wind load. 2) One layer of plastic is an energy sink, works ok during the day but plummets at night. You need at least 2 layers with a blower, I have done 4 layers which worked super good. Use 2 old layers under 2 new layers.

its easy to attach the plastic. Just measure the size of the plastic length and width to go up one side of the greenhouse to the top while adding about 2 more feet. Its best to attach it on a day where the wind speed is low. It helps to have about 4 people to hold the plastic in place. I have ferring strips to hold the plastic in place. By Digging down into the greenhouse you can Tap into the 50 to 55 degree air that comes from the soil that has been dug out. I'm in a northern climate and temps reached down into the teens but nothing froze in the greenhouse. The first year I had the greenhouse some plants froze but after having dug deeper into the ground The plants never froze. When it is entirely dug out, it will be filled with drainage pipe and crushed stone and fans will blow the air through. The reason why it was partially dug out is that a family of groundhogs decided to make there home on the right side of the greenhouse. :-)

We are trying to become as close to self sufficient as possible, both food and heat for the house. The heat may be more of a challenge.

For the heat issue, start by super-insulating your house. Then turn the south side into a solar collector by adding a greenhouse.

@@tangobayus That is one of the best ideas. On solar collectors for homes be sure not to over glaze the south side or it might be too hot in the summer time.

Fantastic video. Very interesting. That 8 foot dig sure looks challenging. Kudos. Subscribed 👍🏼

I wonder how much further down he is going to find ground water, I'm actually surprised the pit he is digging hasn't filled with water. Hopefully going down 8 feet get doesn't discover a spring and fills the pit with water.

Pretty good idea for a DIY er. Good ideas. For gaining You Tube subscribers Lose the music. It is annoying. Had to skip through it. When setting something up show at least one detail shot of each component, so we can see what you are doing. Write a script or at least have notes. The whole project might have cost you 580 dollars in a material. However if you add in the labor involved in digging down to 8 feet by hand then you have a lot of sweat equity in the project. Those hours add up to labor cost. The time spent not doing something else.

@@stevejacobson8958 Not a problem. There are a few of you creators out there who talk about gaining subscribers etc. They are usually doing something on youtube but take time to help smaller channels. I got my info from them. I just saw the first one of these about the geothermal green house today. I might be able to incorporate something like this for my land.

Hi, just a tip, change the headline to 580 and remove the ".00" because at first glace I thought it said 580 thousand $, and I would imagine many would do the same mistake and never have interest in your video because of it. Good luck.
