@stevejagger86022 ай бұрын
This really appeals to me because it shows that what mostly appears to be scrap can be recycled into a working machine. As a society we are too fond just scrapping equipment without considering what could be repurposed or recycled. Well done!

I repair a ton of stuff in my day to day. The problem isn't willingness to repair, it's the lack of serviceability or availability of parts. I legit was looking to repair something last week and to buy the replacement part I needed was a $5 difference in buying the same tool brand new. New saves me shipping time, labor time, and gives me a warranty. It wasn't what I wanted to do, but it was the option left to me by the manufacturer.
@stevejagger86022 ай бұрын
@@elijah3807 I live in Uganda where spare parts are as rate as hen's teeth so salvaging and adapting canibalised parts is often the only way to repair something. It certainly makes you very creative and adapt to what is in the waste stream because ordering online with next day delivery isn't an option 😎
@stevejagger86022 ай бұрын
@@reallunacy I went through a similar situation with a Chinese brand washing machine where the spider which supports and drives the drum broke one of the spokes. A local white goods engineer, and friend of mine, could order online at nearly £100 plus labour. He said that for little more money I could buy a new machine but that the build quality at that price was poor and would only last a few years of use. The machine I had was well constructed and was repaired and will likely give another ten years of service. So it is not always about perceived cost. I see Dean do this. He makes a cost benefit analysis to work out how best to serve his client. So often in his videos he heads to old stock to find a salvaged part which gets the the client up and running at minimum cost. For me it is the satisfaction that comes from adaptation to create a working piece of equipment which matters the most.
@stevejagger86022 ай бұрын
@@elijah3807yes I agree not everything is possible to repair but there is a western attitude of chuck it and replace it. You will be surprised how resourceful people are because of lack of supply here.
@reallunacy2 ай бұрын
@@stevejagger8602 even in Dean's videos he talks about parts costing so much that it isn't worth repairing. I've personally repaired every major appliance in my home except for my dryer and my HVAC to keep them in service instead of replacing them and in my professional life I've repaired countless items. The problem is that too often you, unless you have a graveyard of used parts, you either can't acquire at all or can't acquire them for a price that matches the value of the device. I had a TV recently where the internal power supply failed. The manufacturer didn't sell it at all and on the used market the cheapest I could find that board was for $300 and it was being sold as is. For the size TV you can replace the TV with a new unit of the same brand for that price and that wouldn't include my labor to install it for my customer. I get a lot of people have fallen into a mindset of replacement, but that is because most don't have the knowledge to repair themselves and it's too difficult for independent repair shops to acquire parts at a reasonable cost compared to replacement. How many times has Dean said that himself in his videos and that doesn't even show the tools that never even made it behind his counter, for instance Hilti or Panasonic going forward?
@joe2mercs2 ай бұрын
Dean, you do yourself down. You have an expert eye for what is worn such as the tool holder, gear teeth, bearings etc. I am sure that if you were to offer these as “‘old but new’ refurbished by Dean” your clients would be happy to pay up to 50% of the new price
@mmuller24022 ай бұрын
😅 up to 50% of new is not enough, should be 150% of new price as you only get trash these days or ultra high price. This Tools should perform similar to the best today while holding up much better and just leaving a little comfort on the table which newer machines offer

Great way of using up some of the spare part machines you have in storage , you then get to see what parts are actually scrap and only fit for the bin . Making a machine run again could be sold cheap in the shop and earning more money for the owner

I've enjoyed you for a year or two. This content was a new venture and I enjoyed it. Thank you. This might be a way to help sort out the parts container. Toss the garbage, make a machine, organize the good leftovers. Yes, I apparently have a touch of OCD. You throwing all the parts around your bench drives me nuts. You are therapy. You have also taught me to service my, and my guys tools. Several of your fans identified why I couldn't find the puller you regularly use. 'Micro Puller' was the way to find it. Your fans are awesome too! Sourcing parts is a shit show for DIY, though I know it's difficult for you too. Cheers Dean!
