Part 2 out now! I extended the shelter and built a fireplace. Go check it out at
• From DUGOUT to small C...
I`m reuploading this video because I initially used copyright music by accident. I`m actually quite happy about it, the new song fits way better anyways.
Building a bushcraft dugout/ underground shelter alone in the woods.
The small hut built entirely from dead wood features a bed and a bench and is surrounded by a low stone wall.
It`s been an drudgery shoveling away all the soil, clay and small stones and since I only had time on the weekends, it took me almost two months to finish the digging.
I initially planned the shelter to only be about 2 by 1 metres, but later changend my mind to expand towards the back and build a kind of loft with a bed.
For further information check the FAQ in the comments :)
I really enjoyed building this shelter. It has been a great opportunity for me to escape from everyday life and the stress I had in school.
Big Thank You to My Self Reliance, TA Outdoors and Joe Robinet for inspiring me to get outside and be creative!

FAQ: Why is the shelter located in a natural drainage? Won't it get flooded in case of heavy rain? No. What may look like a wash or natural drainage actually is the result of a former small sand mining site and dirt and stones being dumped in the pits afterwards, creating these small hills and indentations on/in the slight natural slope. - How does it perform in the rain? Though not filming much of it, i put a layer of stones between the logs and the dirt as a drainage. It works pretty well so far, the shelter is dry. I plan on digging a trench on the backside of the shelter and uphill to divert any runoff. - What about a fireplace and/ or stove? I plan on adding some kind of fireplace, maybe even a clay/ stone/ metal furnace inside the shelter. - What is the purpose of the shelter? I don't plan to hunt from it or anything. I built it for the joy of the process, for hanging out, do a bit of bushcrafting and maybe some overnighters in the summer. - Is the shelter on private land? Yes, it is. - How long did it take me to finish this shelter? I started digging in May '17 which took me two months. I only had time on the weekends and finally completed the shelter with the small bench in January 2018. - Did I plan it on my own or did I copy a design elsewhere? I planned it on my own but changed my mind two times in the process. First time while digging, when I decided to rotate the shelter by 90 degrees and therefore had to expand the pit in the back lefthand corner, as you maybe can see in the pictures. The second big change was when I had halfway finished my initial plan but then thought of adding a kind of loft sice I realised the shelter would be quite small otherwise.

I love how people keep trying to tell you what's going to happen, AFTER you've experienced it. "Super intelligent" person: "you're going to be soaked when it rains!" You: "no I'm not, it's already rained. I stayed dry!" You're a lot nicer than me, I'd be pointing out a lot of ignorance, in a very unkind manner, and making people feel as embarrassed as they deserve to feel. I used to do stuff like that when I was a little younger, and I loved it. You did a great job, better than any shelter I ever made. Keep up the great work!

Nice work dude. My dad and brother built a small cabin in the woods. Took us 2 months. It was 20x20 10 foot center ceiling and 6.5ft around the walls. Used pine and split logs for flat floor. Sealed with oakum. That was in 1965. Went back home to visit friends, still standing today. Our friends grand kids use it as a play house. 50 plus years! You did good young man. Real good.

Everyone`s a critic these days and usually practice their skils from the soffa , try getting outside and digging a hole of this size with your mult-tool . the lad did great ! when the rainwater hits his bed he will deal with it and add it to his knoledge. He created this in his mind and built it with his hands , and not only that he took the time to video it and learned great editing techniques to inspire many people to get up and do something that might actually help to save a life . Everyone`s a critic these days !

as someone who has put up a lot of cattle fencing, at the 3.30 mark, when doing a diagonal support, line up where you want it to sit when done, cut a notch into the up right for the cross member to sit in and cut the cross member at roughly a 45 degree angle (you could also slightly cut off the point at the end to make it flat, for a better grip), then hammer it in for a tight and solid fit, if you have nails, drive one into the cross member and up right. the wood will rot before it moves. also cut off less than will be needed and trim to suit.

I ran across a similar dugout shelter years ago when hiking in Virginia. It was raining hard and we spotted it cause we had wandered off the trail in the rain. It was built into a hillside and every dry inside. Some one had built shelf’s in it an there was a coffee can stove there. Which we used to warm up while we consulted our terrain map to figure out where we were.
