I like the point about getting good to the extent that you like art enough to hang your own art on your own wall, and feel bad if you sold it

I’ve been a full time artist for 13 years. My work is 5K -35K. I’ve sold to presidents and A list celebs and I can tell you first hand that it’s not that great. I have always had to paint what they want which was vastly different from what I wanted to paint. My heroes are Sargent, Sorolla and Rembrandt but ended up painting pop art because of society’s obsession with celebrity. I became an endentured servant. I just quit full time art and took a part time job so I can have my art back. Commissions kill passion. At the end of my life I want no regrets. Selling out is truly regretful.
@jacksonm22264 жыл бұрын
byron buchanan i cant believe you’re commenting on this video! i love your work and i’m so inspired by it. definitely a good point you make, but honestly create what you want to create, you lol feel better about the outcome :)
@somerandomfatguy.33844 жыл бұрын
But sir, is opening for commission is really that bad I mean if one individual decide to make art as primary route for their lively hood, in that matter isn't selling out would not be necessary ? I mean how he/she suppose to pay the bills?
@dw3094 жыл бұрын
Lol, this is what people have to do everyday, working to create a service or product they have no connection to. Why do artists have such egos to feel they are an exception to this? I’m speaking in regards to marketing your work, not creating art as a recreation.
@SunilRajPhilipAchen4 жыл бұрын
I don't think you are doing any mistake by making commissioned art. The great masters you were pointing out were also doing commissioned work and had patrons at that era!
@nicoledice62884 жыл бұрын
I’m so surprised to hear you say this. I am happy for you though, taking your art back is better for your soul. I stopped doing commissions last year for similar reasons, it was draining me creativity to satisfy what others wanted and took away time that I could use to create art that I was truly proud of

I am about to finish school and want to focus on creating art rather than going to university and study something I don’t really enjoy. This is the perfect timing for you to start this series and I am really happy about learning more insides about the path an professional artist needs to take. I already gathered a lot of information and have a detailed plan on how to get things going, but at first I am going to create a lot of art, just as you suggested. It is very interesting and calming to me that I don’t fear the path I am going to take and rather am excited about the future. The future of creating art and focusing on marketing etc. because I am interested in business as well (but who isn’t these days lol) Thank you, love your work

the worst feeling ive ever had was when i did a drawing of an elephant. i absolutely loved it, it is to this day the best piece ive ever produced, but i was in desperate need of money and i had to sell it. it sold for some nice money, nothing worth noting really in the professional sense, but it was still a decent amount for me, but my god it broke my heart to put it in the post and say goodbye to it. It was a very valuable lesson though about exactly what youve mentioned, draw as if it is a piece you would want to keep. it really does make you put so much more in to your work.

Finally someone says it, " hobby artists" ...social media is flooded with this, and I love the fact you said do the best work you would be happy to hang on your own wall..this is so overlooked! An addition could be to mention staying in tune with the market and what is selling at the moment. I mean, fx certain subjects will be on a high right now, like fx physical health and social distancing, which may not have had a market six months ago. But also more long lasting or popular interests, like fx mental health, which is a big focus in many countries and has been for a while.

You are an idol to me honestly, you inspired me to create and draw again after almost 3 years without drawing something serious, i love your videos too ♥️ and i have a question for you that could also be a new tutorial, which techniques do you use to sketch the drawings? I use the squares/scaling one, but for bigger drawings like yours i don't know if that would be reliable at all and also if you know any tips for sketching a reference photo just by eye that would be awesome! (I mess up proportions a lot when i draw by eye) thank you Jono and have a great day!
