This week we figure out a plan to mount our solar panels on our shipping container which involves moving the conex, welding the steel mount and prepping the conex for paint!
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

Your opening drone footage is just THE BOMB! Such Beauty! The melting time-lapse tells the story of spring/summer so perfectly! Eric & Arielle what followed blew my learning curve wide open… and I’m moving toward 76. Thanks for bringing excitement to the last Thursday in May! Creating a solar array out of metal pieces (some used) is fascinating! You are climbing to new heights each time you post! 💞

Thanks for the overhead of the cleared area as well as how dense the forest is. Now I can see it’s only about 3 acres. It’s misleading when the camera is at ground level and panning a lot. Good job on the solar mount. It will be interesting to see the components you’ve chosen as well as the setup. When do you get the magnetic signs for the truck for your homestead construction company? Thanks for the video, always fun.

@@dorothyallen3614 yes that’s correct I was actually just commenting on the cleared area I commented on in a previous episode when I thought the cleared area was 15 acres because we hadn’t seen a good overhead yet. Thanks for the reply I like the community interaction here because it doesn’t get ugly over some small detail. It’s just fun watching and vicariously participating with them.

One thing I would recommend is cutting some diagonal bracing (like 3ft+ long) to go from the vertical posts to the top horizontal piece. It will greatly stiffen up the structure preventing it from wracking side to side when the panels are in place.

Will that matter once they get all the contents back in? I’m a little nervous about how high the panels are as well. Anyway, it’s Eric and Arielle so we know they’ve already considered this!

Just a couple of things I would do, from learning the hard way. Put a non-conductive membrane between the aluminum clamp for the solar panel and the steel rack, and put a good grounding system from the rack to the ground for lightning strikes. I built a canopy rack for my boat, and mounded the pieces over the canopy to the steel uprights, and you could actually measure the electricity for the electrolysis, and they rusted through quickly. Where i live now in B.C., we have a summer place on the ocean. Everyone grounds their r.v. to the ground to protect them from lightning. Don't get a lot, but when we do, they are good ones. Good job on the welding.

The rust that you’re describing sounds like galvanic corrosion from dissimilar metals in contact with one another. Good suggestion for them to isolate the two metals.

Back in the early 1900's, my granddad and his sons moved the community church down a hill to it's new location. It's still there. They used the same method, with roller logs. The only difference, they used a team of horses! Great job! Loved the opening! ❤

I like how you finish a project to completion before moving to another. It would be so tempting with your long list, to defer certain tasks until you "have time". Like painting the ceiling of the chicken coop. But this is why your homestead looks so good. Not only are things structural, but finished as well. Great job as usual.

Bo knows... Bandit's ready!! Pepper's like: Mi wrm! Yay!!! I was so pleased to see Bo in frame! I was beginning to worry he wasn't doing well (or worse). Attaboy Bo! Bandit sure was excited to see "dad" come home. Yes, the further north you go, the more intense the sunlight is during summer. Up in the high arctic, 60F feels like 85F-90F, and if there's no breeze it really feels hot. The caribou LOVE LOVE LOVE the Oil Pipeline when it's suspended above ground, it provides shade and they'll all line up to stand in the shade during the heat of the day. They also love the buildings on the gravel pads. Each building has air handling fans which blow out as they exhaust. This knocks down the bugs and gives caribou a break from the swarms when they stand underneath. Pretty exciting seeing the solar framework going up! You have a triangulation effect with the frame, consider adding some diagonal bracing to triangulate the side loading against those Alaskan storm winds. From vertical to mid-span horizontal brace. Looking amazing thus far. Can't wait to see it all come together for you two. Nice team work, as always.

I was a general contractor in my younger days and I would sure like to see you put a sway brace on the two verticals at least 3 feet long. If you have any wind at all with those solar panels it is braced back to front but not from side to side. If the wind starts moving it back and forth from side to side it will break your welds. I love what you are doing.

We use the same inverter for our off grid system and love it. We got 2! Tips from a welder, get a cold cut saw. They’re not as cheap as the abrasive discs but they last a long while, cut fast, and the steel is cool to the touch after cutting. Get a speed square, medium size. It makes for scribing lines so much easier. Your welds look good! Awesome project.

To know your loved one has passed into the eternal presence if God is cause for much rejoicing. It's only when we know they've rejected salvation and forgiveness of their sin that death brings such grief and sorrow, as was the case of my much loved Dad who absolutrefused to repent and accept Christ as his salvation. I looooooooved watching the snow melt and having that transition into spring (although it really feels like summer). Eric, great work on all of the welding. What a creative way to set up your solar panels. It kind of blows me away the projects you tackle. It is honestly so empowering and teaches me that I can do projects and to always try. Because that’s what you do. You tackle projects head on even if you’ve never done something before. And you do it TOGETHER!! I LOVE that do so many things together. Both of you are so inspiring. I do have to say that I agree with the other commenters that suggest putting triangular beams in the corners to further stabilize the crossbeam. My uncle is constantly doing everything he can to add strength to every project & he sometimes goes overboard. But his quality of work & knowing that the structure will be very hard pressed to break apart is undoubtably unquestionable. Hopefully that makes sense lol Anyway, I share that because I can hear him in my head saying to put the triangular support beams in the corners of the frame. I hope Bo is ok. I’m honestly subconsciously worried with each video that we will get the news that Bo has passed on. But my excitement definitely wins over & I savor each video. Thank you for sharing these parts of your life even though it can be inconvenient trying to film and work at the same time. I’m sure plenty of projects would get done faster if you weren’t filming. But truly & sincerely, thank you for being you, for inviting us into your home and your lives and showing us that anything is possible as long as you simply try. Within some reason of course but hopefully you get my point. Take care both of you, and viewers/commenters, be safe out there. ❤

It amazes me all the skills you have learned doing all the chores and builds on both properties. Whatever it is you figure it out and even if you make a mistake you own up to it and come up with a solution. It doesnt have to be perfect as long as it enriches your lives.

I keep thinking that you all are "helped along" by comments in the land of You Tube. I hope that's true because I've offered some pretty lame comments. (like the one below.). Anyway you've got a huge thumbs up from me with the 20 foot connex solar panel build. The most amazing part of this it seems to me is that it's portable. There's a guy across town here in New Hampshire selling these and of course I'm thinking: " hey I could set something like that up and then make it so it can be moved for different seasons." A most excellent project and I'm learning about a new solution. Thanks so much. And seeing the extent of "wilderness" is beyond the beyond. ~ A Sea of trees. So cool.

Eric, your brain should be offered to science when you’re gone… I’ve come to realize that you are a genius. You seem to be able to figure out anything and everything without too much trouble.. Ariel you make the most beautiful videos of your environment so we can enjoy the ultimate beauty of Alaska through you. You are quite a talent.! You are a total magician in the kitchen and caring for your beers which takes a lot.. I love how you can laugh at challenge and support each other and appreciate each other. You are both so fortunate to have found each other and the love in your partnership. 😁 you guys.! ☮️❤️
