true I was in FSAE too, and my brain is like why's everything in this car seems XL size? and the cage design is so inefficient, haha but u know what its Chris's build he can do what he wants. I can design a better chassis for that same car, lighter, stronger and looks better haha.
@martinbernath
@martinbernath 4 жыл бұрын
Dont need to be in fsae to know that main hoop is just wrong. Not only it would be stronger if it was one piece but it would also look better since it seems like this thing is all about looks. He has a tube bender, a really good one, no idea why he hasnt used it on this build.

The cage in the front seems very unsafe in a roll over situation instead of a triangle which is strong the whole front cockpit is only squares and would be dangerous if the car flipped upside down and got stuck and folded the cage over like a parallelogram

The more i watch this the more dissapointed i am. First the extremely long wheelbase, then the ladder frame with corvette suspension and now the 5 piece main hoop.. This thing wont only be ridiculously heavy, it will also be dangerous, but i guess it doesnt matter since he wont drive it anyway. The idea is good, but the execution.. It pays off to do some research before you start welding square tubes together. Look at all the tube frame cars, old f1 cars, fsae cars, theres not an inch of square tubing. One of the best things about building a single seatee from scratch is that you can design your own suspension geometry, car suspension is restricted by the width of frame rails etc. Corvette suspension, as good as it might be for a car, a custom suspension with longer arms would be way better. And that main hoop is just illegal. Yes, i havent built anything like this, but i dont build things if i dont know how to build them.

I'm just a carpenter but if I was doing that, I know that triangles make things strong.. I'd add a diagonal brace in that little box in the front on each side, a cross member in the front where it flattens out, a diagonal brace horizontally in that box I just created, and a small brace from where the hard to get into bar hits the roll bar back to the back brace of the roll bar.

youre probably way beyond reading this comment where it could be helpful, but i highly recommend putting small gussets in the body portion of the cage/frame, check with "go power sports" to get an idea of what im talking about. itll add HUGE strength to your cockpit in the case of a crash from any direction. we use them on heavy duty go karts to increase the frame strength in HUGE ways.

Looks like there are a LOT of comments regarding the safety and overall style of the build vs Expectations. So, I'll say what I think about the build: -Judging from the natural (Estimated) turning circle of that Cadillac-sized frame, you REALLY shouldn't be trying to fit an LS in the back of this thing, as it's causing unnecessary length requirements to fit it. -Steel tubing is just making this thing look like it's supposed to be a single-man military cruiser meant to take an IED impact (Don't know if this is what you're looking for in this build). Still, I would go for something lighter like Stainless/Titanium/Carbon Fiber rods to reduce the Glaring weight issue of the current state of the build, take into mind that this is BEFORE you add the cross-bracing, mechanical/electrical internals and the ~200Kg V8 in the back. Just want to look into that bit before it's too late. *-That hoop design. You should've designed it with the intention of making it a single, bent Metal hoop, right from the get-go.* -Everything design-wise with this project right now screams 'ramp-car disaster' waiting to happen. Add a HALO ring around your head or lose it in a crash. Make weight reduction by bending the chassis tubes (This point is stated above) or risk SUV characteristics in any Hairpin. Add Dimpled plates with the cross-bracing to amplify the rigidity or watch it fold from the center overtime. If anything, send any design you make to an FIA team and see what changes they make to adhere to the safety regulations on a track. Because it will almost look like they threw yours out the nearest window with where it's at. Gotta give you props though for how far you've come and how much progress you've already made. But _Please, don't take it anywhere other than SEMA_ (On a trailer of a Lifted truck) or McDonalds until you sort those underlying issues out before you risk it all in a Trackday Coffin, with your measurements, at Laguna Seca or Willow Springs!

My only concern is the triangulation of the cage. You're using a lot of boxes, and not a lot of triangles. I would urge you to reinforce the sides of the main body with alternating diagonal pieces like the Ariel Atom so you have a lot more rigidity. Also, that hoop looks ready to crush at any moment. Please consider a single piece mandril bent square hoop with at least one crosspiece behind the seat so that the integrity of the structure is somewhat rooted in science, rather than your confidence in oscar's welding ability
