Ok not gonna lie that comment about its tail being a monster hunters dream had me almost spit take in laughter, I love the monster hunter series and yes that is true, funnily enough mh has made tarrasque sized monsters in the past, gogmazios, dalamadur, akantor, ukanlos, lao shan lung, etc and monster hunters would totally look at tarasques and say: "yeah i can take it"

A Tarrasque really feels like the sort of threat a group of level 20 character would still be EXTREMELY wary of, much less any lesser adventurers - a being of pure destruction that strikes fear into even the gods is the brand I imagine with this sorta thing. So naturally, it's not meant to actually be defeated by player characters - it's a walking natural disaster, you can't stop it any more than you can stop a tsunami or a meteor (please ignore the fact high level casters can prolly stop both of those) - so the goal is to work AROUND its existence rather than THROUGH it. So if you look at its stat sheet and the thought process is 'yeah this looks takeable' it's not fulfilling that narrative role - it's more than just 'a big scary thing', it's THE big scary thing that still exists because nobody has managed to actually get rid of it despite most everybody having a vested interest in doing so. So to say the least, I approve of the rework!

I think that is a failure of the DM itself more often than not. This is the sort of thing that could devastate a town 5 miles away on ACCIDENT when it flings a chunk of a nearby mountain a little too hard at whoever engaged it and you wouldn't even know it happened until days or weeks later when survivors reach the area... Simply TRYING to fight this monster should come with campaign level consequences to the entire surrounding area AT A MINIMUM...

@@BertoxolusThePuzzled That is a fair take! It's definitely the sort of thing that has a divine 'do no fuck with' sign attached to it because riling it up never ends well. I can imagine an entire order of paladins forming whose sworn duty is simply to keep people away from the Tarrasque, with maybe an internal faction dispute caused by some of the younger generation who did not witness its danger personally pushing towards trying to exterminate it instead of evacuating towns and driving off ambitious monsters and adventurers. Ideas...

I really appreciate adding the adjective “Dire” to a being which is supposed to be utterly and completely unique amongst the planes. What’s that? Your players defeated God? Try your luck against Dire God! (The miniature also looks extremely cool! And I’m glad to see these changes back, as the 5e non-Dire Tarrasque was for sure weak baby [duck].)

This! This make you remember the Tarrasque was supposed to be dangerous and scary. You talked about one of it's nickname, but let's not forget it's other one... The devourer of Gods. Yeah, the Tarrasque actualy ate a few Gods when they were walking on the material plane. And it actualy digested them because it's stomacs are strong enough to disolve and digest most artefacts, and I did mean stomacs, it has 3 of them. You made it justice with this!

Still not as insane as the "variant" Tarrasques that WotC put out in their web article during 3.5... CR 350... Also known as the "Devourer of Worlds" The "simple" part of it's upgrade was it gaining divine rank, the "Of Legend", and Legendary Templates... The D20 things that WotC could, theoretically, stop it were either the Lady of Pain or if the Death Star managed a critical hit with a lot of force points poured into it twice in a row...and a few things from the D20 CoC book that only had a very limited release and those entirely because of other things tied to them.

I thought of a good story for this as a campaign quest. A rumor has been going around about animals of unusual size on the river leading to a mountain. If tey drink the water the party member gains one size level. If they follow the river up the mountain they will find a huge cave where thousands of potions of giants strength are shattered and several hundred are still intact. But it turns out that the dire terrasck was using this place as its lair and drinking water. The party can either have one character chug a bunch of giants strength potions or if they pass a perception check they will notice a experimental vial labeled "potion of Colossus strength" in which doing either will cause them to gain a similar size to the terrasck and have a Kaiju style fight

Another thing to add to your tarrasque, my HB tarrasque has an ability I call ‘Overdrive’ where under certain Hp thresholds it gains some abilities, like increased speed, more attacks, or summoning a fu**ing firestorm to burn whoever dared to touch my boy. It’s super customizable and lets you put up some abilities that may otherwise be a bit strong to have active throughout the whole fight

You know, from purely a homebrew lore point of view, it would be interesting to imagine that this is in fact the TRUE Tarassque, and that what we call the regular 5e Terassque is infact a lesser more numerous species that evolved later on. When you consider how much this creature is hyped up in any version of dnd lore, and then compare its stats to anchant dragins, it really comes out short😅.

I'd designed my own Dire Tarrasque several years ago, combining all the best features from over the editions. It had pretty much everything you'd mentioned here, plus a stunning roar, improved and limb-severing critical hits (from AD&D), insane mix of disintegrating damage to anything it swallowed (in the lore, it can literally digest gods), and a ranged attack of shooting a spray of giant spines from its tail and regenerating them on a recharge, like a giant manticore.

as a DM who started off with 3.5e who had a tarrasque in their first campaign, I too also made a variant of the Tarrasque for 5e. I have called it the Exotic Tarrasque (Exotic because it's the terminology I use to describe race variants, weapons, monster variants, and etc in my D&D setting I made) and it has two note worthy things: It is literally unstoppable and will always come back if killed (Ala Pathfinder Tarrasque) It is literally the size of a mountain in Jirolnoka (Cause who doesn't wanna have to climb on a monster to be able to fight it. c:)

Odd, you just made the 1998 Godzilla into a Dire Tarrasque, at least the comic book version (Dark Horse Comics) of the famed kaiju who had the talent of suddenly burrowing into the ground and reappearing in another place. I'm glad you're putting the "terror" back into the [Dire] Tarrasque, for the superhero-like 5e characters need to relearn that there are some monsters so terrible that they shouldn't get cocky when up against one.

One thing I added that was inspired by the Death Zoid from the Zoids series was that it could launch spikes from its back and tail to impale the party like the Dragonbone Golem can and add a super long ranger Disintegration Breath and have its aura deal 3d8 psychic damage to frightened creatures

I had also adjusted my Tarrasque to have a stronger regeneration and a mechanic to the fight. The players have to find a way to slow its regeration in order to actual deal deamge. Because if it can regrow its body from a bit of flesh over a long period of time its fight should reflect that BS regeneration and have it as a mechanic to overcome to win the fight

I might not know a lot about DnD but I think it'd be neat to give the tarrasque a cloverfield gimmick where all kinds of highly venomous or otherwise dangerous creatures to off been feeding off the tarrasque and the dire one could make use of earth elementals that hide away in it's earth like body to come spilling forth from various wounds and such as a bit of a last second bunk rush

My Tarrasque took some inspiration from Fatalis. It absorbed magic items of past Adventurers and/or cities it has sundered. Which gave it massive boosts. I would really like to see you cover the Soul Prowler in a future video.

judging from what's been said here, the only thing this tarrasque needs, just as a cherry on top, is an element from it's pathfinder incarnation(either edition): the ability to launch it's spikes! y'know, to absolutely mess up someone who still thinks range can save them. combine that with the grounding aura and say it doesn't affect its own projectiles and there you go. you can't snipe it, but it sure as hell can snipe you.

For those who don’t know a tarrasque literally can not hit a clay golem bc clay golems are immune to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage from non magical non adamantine weapons, and the tarrasque doesn’t have any of those and sure it can swallow a creature dealing 16d6 acid damage but luckily for us our golem friends have a neat little ability called acid absorbance which makes it so that not only does it take no damage it also heals for the amount of acid damage taken so you just need to build up a large enough army of clay golems and the tarrasque physically cannot hit them.

in the games I ran so far and 1 I plan on writing in the future, I basically had the Tarrasque act a lot like Godzilla in the more recent movies, it rampages all over the place on occasion just so it could, hopefully, find something large enough to just eat, usually preferring to go after creatures like Dragons (usually Adult or older), Rocs, Giants, Whales, Purple worms, etc., which it usually seeks to eat multiple of just to support its body. due to this, anytime there is a large threat (especially if it happens to be larger than its usual meals), the Tarrasque will usually wake up and try to eat it since it might get. as for smaller creatures, it does occasionally eat some if there isn't any large creatures around just so it can eat something, but otherwise it only really kills due to the sheer collateral damage it causes with its body. the only thing that makes the Tarrasque Scarier is the fact that some villain's I have may try to imprison the Tarrasque and try to starve it, so when they decide to let it go.....well you can guess what it does afterwards. (however, I do let my players near the end of the game choose whether or not they want to free the Tarrasque, in which case THEY get to have it as a companion for the endgame, and I usually buff my bosses accordingly) as for what how I might run the thing, I basically triple its HP & AC, give it twice as many attacks for its Multiattack, and then give it the ability to just spam its Multiattack because lets be honest if its a giant Hangry death Kaiju, why not let it be absolutely busted. on top of that, I let it regenerate to full HP at the start of its turn, Magic immunity, a burrowing speed (again, it makes sense), as well as tremor sense. lastly, I decided to give it a enormous "Apocalyptic Roar" attack (still thinking of a name), which basically is a large roar that deals massive thunder damage, knocks aerial foes away, and pushes everyone back 5D100 feet away from the Tarrasque.

the fact every version of the tarrasque tries to have a counter to flying which always made me wonder, why dont they just give it a projectile? a breath weapon, let it shoot spikes, use those digging claws tp rip out chunks of the earth and chuck em, or have its roar be so loud it deals sonic damage

Hmmm, this is super scary, but all those spikes? I feel the need to point out the fact that creatures in nature typically develop things like that to keep larger predators away, or difficult to swallow them... So now you need to ask, what is the Fire Tarrasque afraid of?
