@@timwoods2852 that depends on the edition. By at least 3rd they were still sentient, but it was still considered punishment. For my own campaign worlds: becoming a Drider is _technically_ and honor, but there is no way to achieve any higher status after your transformation; you are locked in.

Aw man, it's series like these that make me wish someone would animate my D&D campaigns. In our previous campaign, we did Ghosts of Saltmarsh and I played a human rogue named India. In our very first session, she spat down a well to see how deep it was and a giant snake monster came out and attacked us. This pretty much set the tone for the setting and for India the entire campaign.

Remember, alignment for races is just the race's current natural leaning, it's not a restrictive rule to be. Many have escaped the clutches that tied down their race. I know I made a grey dwarf of unusual size, and she is a derpy as heck innocent bun. And she must be protected! Background: Hermit Class: Path of the Beast Barbarian Homeruled to be able to use animal forms outside of rage as long as they don't provide benefits.
