Haha right as you started showing off the cesium and talking about it making the flame bigger I was thinking about the cesium rockets. Thanks for the shout out dude! Great video. That thing is cursed as hell but so fricken cool. With the amount of power you're pushing through that, you could very easily turn it into a plasma torch, rather than a plasma flame. get a fire brick (the high melting point kind), drill a 1 inch hole through it lengthwise, then drill another hole large enough to fit one of the carbon rods at a 45 degree angle so the rod sticks into the middle of the tube made of fire brick. Then flow argon through the tube. In the case of this thing I think you'll need *a lot* of argon, but you'd probably get a torch with a flame that's a foot long. If you add a constriction at the output end of the tube you can get a tighter flame. To be clear, it'll eat itself after a couple runs. But those runs will be *awesome*. This is done industrially but with water cooling and silicone carbide nozzels and such. Can do crazy stuff with a torch like that. And it'll cut through essentially anything

I’m guessing that when the magnesium burnt it made it super easy for the other stuff in the air besides oxygen (like nitrogen and argon as well as the stuff in the dust in the air) to start to ionize, creating those colors. The red could be caused by Oxygen, nitrogen causes green and yellow, argon causes blue and green. Just based on the mix of the air in the exact area of the coil it would cause those color changes. With the magnesium making it easier to ionize the air it would be more pronounced.

Focking tungsten
@Dovenchiko4 жыл бұрын
This is actually a huge oversight. The most likely explanation of why the tungsten didn't last is the thin tungsten with its high surface to volume ratio caused it to burn. This is why light bulbs burn out when they stop working and often times when you shake a burnt out bulb you can see the tungsten flapping around. Some part of the wire burnt off and became detached. This principle is demonstrated in the video itself when the steel wool burns but the steel rod melts. I guess because tungsten is known for its high melting point people forget that just like iron it burns too.

I love this device but I would have made ONE major design change and that is to configure the coil as a Hartley oscillator, that is put the current from the tube thru the cathode circuit rather than plate, that way the coil would be at a DC potential of ground and while one would still get a serious RF burn if they touched the plasma, it wouldn't conduct 3000 volts at some huge current through the body causing instant death.
@blackguard1427 Жыл бұрын
But you see, that's much less fun
@VintageTechFan Жыл бұрын
I know what you mean, but the circuit used still is a Hartley. Just a common-cathode one instead of the more common, "classical" common-plate one. One way to make it safeR* (but requiring a better insulated heating transformer), would be to ground the plate and use a negative high voltage on the cathode. Like microwave ovens do for the magnetron. *Relative terms, is still f**king dangerous and should not be done.
@4Nanook2 ай бұрын
@@VintageTechFan You could do that also but as the power supply is currently configured, placing it in the cathode circuit makes more sense.
