Ten years in the future: you are a student in college, you attend a lecture on thermodynamics by a guest lecturer. This unassuming man walkes up and turns on a powerpoint. You settle in and take out your laptop. He clears his throat, introduces himself, and begins speaking. The first slide contains an equation that he begins explaining. He reaches into his suit pocket and pulls out a laser pointer. He clicks the button and the entire wall of the lecture hall is vaporized immediately. "My bad," he says. "Wrong one." He puts the laser back in his pocket and continues with the lesson.

From my understanding Laser Diodes are powered by LEDs and LEDs will pull as much power as they can from their power source until they burn out. For most LED circuits you use a resistor which limits the amount of power (current) that the LED can draw so it doesn't just burn itself out. In the case of both the original laser and the final one he used the resistance of the components themselves rather than a dedicated resistor to limit the current. Of course since the components aren't designed to act as resistors the exact resistance value will likely vary quite a bit more than a dedicated resistor which makes it somewhat risky (in terms of whether or not the laser will burn itself out). This also means that the exact output power of each laser pointer will change from one device to another as well as every time you change the batteries though at such low levels (for regular laser pointers) the variance shouldn't be noticeable.

The biggest risk are laser diodes without a proper wavelengh filter system. Thats why safety glasses just work for good filtered laser diodes in the right wavelengh. Every other combination may still make huge damage on your eyes. As you said, for excample a green laser pointer. If you freeze it, it might not work anymore. But when you push the button and look into it you might get blind. It is just emmitting ir in this cold state, but is still powerfull enough to blind you. So take dare while using commercial unprofessional lasers for experiments.

Been watching this dude since I was in elementary and I just graduated high school. I think some of the first videos I watched were like “what green lasers can do” or something like that and something like “tips on focusing lasers”. Watched him all the way through all of his laser bazookas and argon lasers and his plasma experiments. Never stop doing this stuff man. It’s a shame kids today are missing out on experiences that would otherwise teach them amazing things about possible future careers and could show them science and technology to indulge their tinkering mind into. When you were addressing KZbin taking videos down and said “I’ve respected everything along the way” I knew exactly what you meant and I felt it. Although you’re rather calm, you never fail to mention anything that will kill you, blind you, or maim instantly to ensure safety is understood by your viewers. The sort of mentality that these things shouldn’t be seen by kids, let alone anybody, shows that the extreme grasp for safety in today’s world is the downfall of the most basic forms of education. Keep up the incredible content and have a happy thanksgiving man. Ive been slacking on watching but I’ll be sure to get back to it
@blaz28922 жыл бұрын
What terrifies me most about this is one little feature of the final laser. If you look closely, you will see a smaller beam going out at an angle. That’s probably an even bigger recipe for disaster than the main beam if you are not careful, because at least you expect the main one.
@orlyk.9217 Жыл бұрын
It's not safe to consider that being careful is enough safety measure when working with power lasers, for example because you can unexpectedly have a partial ray reflection from metal dust particle into eyes. Just wear glasses.

funily enough, this actually does have a purpose to it. He is working with sensitive electronics and doesn't want to fry them through a static charge on his person, so he grounds himself.
