Sorry this is a bit long: Rob, you need to find a way to make smooth tops to the front winglets. The box section is causing massive drag, breaking the airflow over the top so the air cannot properly rejoin the air underneath. You are right that a majority of downforce ia made from the bottom of an inverted wing (as used on cars) but the top surface is import to total downforce and drag. Next, regarding your Garmin Catalyst, I know you have it mounted so the camera sees it and its an important part of your on track video production. I work as a driving coach in the Midwest and work with engineering minded drivers like yourself who have a tough time shutting off the engineer side of their mind and just driving. However I'm fairly confident in saying you are driving to your data on both your Haltech dash and the green/red on your Catalyst. I use my Catalyst on all clients as its a wonderful tool but too much data can be a huge distraction. If I may I'd suggest changing the Haltech dash so it shows you the Tach/RPM only and rely 100% on the warnings you've set in the ECU/Dash. Trust in your work, your guys work and in the systems you've put in place to protect your engine. You can still download all the data and geek out after sessions as you do now. Place the Catalyst on the dash to the right, still in camera view but out of your direct line of sight. Make it so if you want to see it you have to turn your head, same as how you set your outside mirrors. The camera will still pick it up but you won't. It also gets the hanging wires out of frame which have to be a distraction in shifting and their movement to your eye. Doing these details with another driver I work with transformed his driving in a matter of a few sessions and he found not just lap time buy it freed his mind for better race craft and more of it.

Love all your points! Funny enough I never look at the garmin while driving. It does work well for videos but it was in the way of my line of sight many times. It was nice for the video to see how much time I was shaving before I slid off the track. I do want to get a longer aux cord so I can listen to its instruction. But I haven’t done enough laps to hear it help yet haha. I do plan on shaving the top side of the carbon pieces. It was a fun quick experiment but completely agree with air separation. I also just want gear rpm and MPH. Mostly just mph haha. It’s the metric i use for judging the entry speeds of turns and the long sweepers

I bet the 3-rotor is capable of a 1:50 with a pro driver and a clear track. It's astonishing how much faster you are at wide open throttle than everyone else. It's also cool to see your driving skills gradually improving with each track day 👍

100 percent agree. I feel confident that if I got more time I would have been a 1:58-1:57 for sure. But getting that 2:00 for my first time ever at the track was a major accomplishment for me. Other rotary track guys are running 1:52 and 1:54 so there’s a lot to gain. I’ll be back for sure! Might ask Billy Johnson to drive it now and see what a record holder can do in the car now that it’s so much more reliable.

@@RobDahm In the off chance you or anyone there reads this comment: Might be worth getting yourself a magnehelic gauge- Theyre gauges used to measure pressure differences between 2 points. I mean Im sure wed all love to play in a wind tunnel, but a magnehelic gauge lets you actually measure, accurately, the pressure differences on your aerodynamic bits. Youll be able to measure the upper, and then lower pressures on these devices, and see if theyre making a difference, and if theyre making a difference in the way(s) you want them to. These have been used by grassroots guys for awhile (infact grassroots motors has an older article on how to use them even) to make some pretty good educated guesses about the changes theyre making. Worth looking into maybe?

BTW, Rob... my shock setup was Penske which were custom valved for those spring rates. I ran a GTC nose with an added 3" aluminum splitter and aluminum vortex generators in front of each front wheel opening similar to what you are doing. In the rear I ran the aluminum strut GTC Mazda wing BUT made extended struts to raise the wing 3". All of that worked great as the car kept a stable ride height on most tracks. I ran Mont Tremblant, Mosport, Watkins Glen, Summit Point, VIR, Sebring, Texas World Speedway (RIP), Motorsports Ranch, Barber Motorsports Park, and more with this setup. I guess what I am saying, look into higher spring rates and you will find benefits.

You can always tape some tufts of yarn on the bottom surface of the wing to see if it separates (you find plenty of videos online as examples). You can point a gopro at the tufts while driving the car around to check the flow behaviour on straights, during braking (where the angle of attack increases), or during cornering (where one side will see less flow). Then again, it's not perfect as the yarn itself can upset the boundary layer, but if the flow separates with the yarn, then maybe the winglet is already operating too close to stall to be functional in a wide range of inflow conditions.

It is very helpful to remember Bernoulli's principle. High-pressure, low speed. Low pressure, High speed. It is the most simple way to imagine downforce. The convex side of a wing (be it one that generates lift or downforce) is the one that generates the most downforce/lift. The convex side accelerates the air creating a highspeed low pressure zone (Because the air is forced to travel a longer distance compared to the surrounding air). The low pressure "sucking" the wing up/down creating lift/downforce. :) Something you should consider for front downforce is creating a convex surface under the splitter. The convex surface will enhance the acceleration of air creating a low pressure zone under the front splitter and sucking the front of the car to the ground. Also please wear gloves and cover all skin when working with carbon, nasty stuf. The tiny carbon particles can be absorbed through the skin.

great vid, glad to see more track days and you getting more seat time in the 3 rotor, I would add some plastic on top of your splitter wing where it transitions up to make it as smooth (on top) as possible, seems like there are 2 "ridges" there in the carbon part. Good that the bottom is smooth but you are adding some drag and turbulence to the top of the splitter wing reducing some of the effect. Also what is smoking inside the cabin??? you probably don't want to be breathing that in for long periods of time, we want to keep you around mate! well done.

Looking good Rob, the 1.52 is in range. 8 sec will tho req you getting better but i think you will. And the car getting some more work done. A full 10 point cage will make the car more stiff and combat chassi twisting. You will need some proper racing coilovers that you test a d adjust. Adjustable sway bars back and front. Solid bushings for suspension and tuning of angles of suspensions. Might need more toe in in front less in back. Camber do play a role here as well. Alot of the time can be done with aero and a proper suspension setup with geometry. After getting a race setup on my FD i shaved off over 3 sec from a 1.00 to a 57 sec laptime ay my local track. It’s awsome to see things working out and you getting better and better at this. Oh and get that brake fluid leak fixed ;)

3:02 you have reasonable correlation between air and water (with a proportional advantage to air on account of its lesser mass). So if you go to a sink, and do some math, you can put the water dripping on that wing and figure out what the max angle of attack can be based on water dripping and "giving up" on that wing. Probably would be easier to try it with smoke and a DIY cardboard box wind tunnel tho.

One of my favorite cars of the internet, it's a damn shame it will probably never see the Nürburgring Nordschleife, that would be amazing to see.

You never know, though it has already hit some legendary tracks in the US too. Also it'd probably be banned for noise at the Nurburgring.

Usually your directing air with the lowest canard and air causes a force because it has to change direction but middle or high ones will work like a wing.

Were it my wing, i'd make it such that at the mounting points (or at the very least on the same axis with the mounting points) aluminium bosses would be "glassed" in the wing's structure, recessed along with a small pocket where a strip of teflon could be added. Either as a slip in and using a bolt to secure the edge or with a sacrificial bolt (could be a nylon bolt that threads in the teflon as well as the boss). That way, every time it wears down, you can replace these pads which would eat it instead of the CF. If you make them out of teflon strip, then the cost would be only for the bosses, "glassing" and the operation of cutting and drilling of the strip. The pocket could be an oblong affair into the CF, so it only digs its "toe" in, for support. Jm2c.

If you had less traffic and mechanical issues I think you could have worked your way to a 1.76 watch out for shallow entries thay will cost you a lot of time and work on staying a bit wider on sweeping corners to raise you avaridge mph . You are doing really well man keep at it iam impressed that your progression as a driver is matching your you mechanical technical understanding. Cheers

Have you thought about putting small blocks of derlin under the lip, at least at the front so that when it scrubs, it has a slick hard plastic to keep it from digging into the road?
