Not only that, but they would make several trips to set the brakes because you can’t just apply full brakes one car at a time or else you wear components too hard. So, you’d apply, say 25% on your first trip down, 50% on the way back, etc.

FYI It's brakeman because he sets the brakes not breaks. Caboose is the North American term, brakevan is the European term. The caboose was used as a shelter for crew at the end of the train needed for switching, watching over the train, and in this era setting brakes on cars. It also served as an office for the conductor who was in charge of the train. Later on when airbrakes became standard the brakeman no longer needed to go car to car setting brakes and took on other roles.

Not sure about truck specifically... But steam powered automobiles have existed since the mid 18th century >.> Heck, even prior to the model T (of 1908), electric vehicles were gaining popularity and in use by nearly 40% of the driving population. However, quickly lowering gas/petrol prices thanks to newfound oil deposits and better refinement methods combined with better internal combustion engine developments that made it so that gas/petrol automobiles ended up becoming the mainstream method of travel and quickly left their very slow (and rather low distances of travel in case of electric) steam and electric counterparts behind.
@pascal2085
@pascal2085 2 жыл бұрын
@@SylviaRustyFae What also killed the electric motor was the electric motor. Old time ICE had to be hand cranked, which was not only hard, but also dangerous. At some point the electric motor was so far developed that it could start an ICE.

The “Brakeman’s car” is the living quarters for the brakeman who walks up and down the top of the train to actually hand crank each individual car. However, to eliminate the need to walk on top the train, a brake van was developed to have the braking centered in the back of the train (for the same reason front wheel drive cars were made: because pulling is more efficient than pushing). The brake van would have a single hand cranked emergency brake that can be applied at different strengths to supply extra braking force for the train. Although still used to this day, I don’t think a brake van would be too far fetched for the time period of this game. I hope this has helped clear things up!
@coalcountry6795
@coalcountry6795 2 жыл бұрын
Brake vans were more a UK/European thing. Here in the states, they did have the cars with individual brakes like you had said. Later on, air brakes were fitted. You would have a hose you would also connect between each car when you connected them, and a compressor on the locomotive would air up the system, which would release each car's brakes. Also, not only did the brakeman have the caboose, but on some railroads, on their locomotives, they would have a crude shanty on the tender called the "doghouse." That was built so the head end brakeman could ride their, and watch the train behind him. Love some of the looks of them, but would not prefer to ride in one of those, especially on a long trip hahaha.

That and loosing fingers while coupling cars. Back then you could tell how long a brakeman worked on the railroad by how many fingers he had left.
@OnyxBMW
@OnyxBMW 2 жыл бұрын
The railroad companies also fought both the introduction of the auto-coupler and of air brakes controlled by the conductor specifically because they thought it would cost more money. Eliminating the brakeman was actually one of the best reductions of cost, as they could have literal squads of brakemen running along the top of cars, and no one likes losing fingers, as well as the auto coupler being a lot faster than the link and pin system of before.

Speaking towards the whole, "it's a lot of work" too move the 3 and 3 to get it in, Technically speaking, This is the early stages of trains IRL when it comes to the Era, Not everything was made out to plan for the future, Things where hard back then, and one did have to spend a whole 15-20 hour shift to complete the work for that day. To be fair, it takes a long time even today on some rail cars. Coupling to a track of 10 rail cars, releasing the brakes, pulling them out of a track, shoving them in a different track, and reapplying the brakes can take easily 30 minutes if not more depending on the specific situation.

Regarding rescue engines, the Eureka seems like a good candidate for that sort of work. if there was ever a runaway and you had to go find/rescue the missing engine, or if you were out on the line and ran out of firewood, it might be a good idea to have a engine that can be used for search and rescue missions, and, even if it doesn't have the best pulling power, The Eureka has a good top speed when it's running light, and it has a very high fuel capacity, so it could be out on the line for a longer time period, and having a high fuel capacity means it could share some of it's firewood with stranded engines, which makes it a perfect candidate for a search and rescue locomotive.

Caboose cars were primarily used for shelter/office space for crew involved in shunting and switching at the rear. They did supply braking power when needed though. As for modern trains, they do brake with every car via an airbrake system. Modern train engines have three brake types; the primary shoe brakes, secondary engine brakes, and slave/monitor brakes in the form of massive electromagnets that slow the axles if they hit a target speed. That saves costs associated with diesel for engine braking and pads for primary braking when they're trying to maintain level speeds.

24:05 What I have read, the Brakeman did run through all the cars and brake each car. And then later, they added the caboose where the brakeman can brake from the caboose. When Automatic brakes where introduced though, the brakeman's job changed and they now help run the train and sort of a security/maintenance man where they look for any overheated axles, car checks and stowaway checks. Not an expert, this is just what I have read about brakeman.

Automobiles did indeed exist well before the model T. In fact, electric cars even existed prior to the model T (1908, so almost 1910s). Its just both kinds of automobiles werent very efficient and were more luxury items and also carried higher risks and required lots of technical knowhow to even operate, let alone maintain one. Production automobiles first started appearing in 1887, however even prior to that there were specialty made cars since not long after the internal combustion engine was produced in 1826; just very rare and things of grt novelty.

A brakeman who's job was to walk the train and turn brakes on or off as needed, to check the load for shifting or loose bindings, etc. And a conductor or another brakeman. A conductor was responsible (and still, to this day) for the loads, every aspect. A conductor in a passenger train, the load being people, was responsible for the loading and unloading of passengers, to collet the tickets, etc. In freight, they made sure loads were secure, in the right position, not too high, or too heavy. But these crew members needed a place to stay too. When stopped or overnighted (some trains had a day shift and night shift) would need a place to sleep, eat, bathroom, etc. Some cabooses are still in use today. The RV of the rails, some maintenance crews still use them.

14:30 There were steam traction engines pretty parallel to trains not exactly familiar with the history of them but a steam car of some sort wouldn't be too out of reason.

Yes steam tractors, were compareable (loads of strength KZbin vids) but steam boilers, if tilted too far tend to get damaged (or even explode (Think about swirling boiling water in a pot on the stove. The water that splashes up onto the hot sides instantly boils.)) So a steam tractor would be grade restricted like a train)

Hi, I look up what the cabooses was use for, it was use as a shelter for the crew required in switching and shunting also keeping a lookout for load shifting, damage to equipment and cargo including overheating axles. The cabooses that was use as a shelter and braking was called the brake van.

the brakeman had a few jobs, but yes, back in the day he would actually be expected climb along the outside of the whole length of the train while in motion to access the brakes. Safety laws eventually changed that (like with the pin & chainlink couplers getting replaced by knuckle couplers), but he definitely would use the brakes on the caboose itself, set signal lanterns and wave signal flags so trains running off schedule pre modern comms and block sections would know the train was there and hopefully have a chance to stop, and, most interestingly and importantly for YOU in multiplayer railroads online, would sometimes be required to flip switches into the right position for the next scheduled train as they passed. Again, in the 1800s when safety was “recommended guidelines” and “industry convention.”

In britain, they are called brake vans, so I believe they are used for brakes. Modern trains have an air pipe running through that controls the brakes, so releasing or unreleasing the brakes will do the whole train

"There's no way they would like... run between all the cars hand cranking them" As a matter of fact, that is exactly what they did. Very dangerous job. Same people were also in charge of coupling cars together. They lost a lot of fingers, if not their lives.

On the topic of a caboose/brakeman car/crew car, before the existence of more modern vacuum brakes across all of the cars, it would be the job of a brake man to climb across the cars (while in motion) and start setting handbrakes on the cars themselves. The job was exceptionally dangerous and brakemen often would fall off and get hurt or would die. If that was the case you may not be able to safely set the locomotive brakes and stop the train safely. Then along came George Westinghouse that invented the modern vacuum brake, which subsequently lead the way for the modern air brake systems. He outfitted a locomotive with his brake system, loaded up a bunch of potential investors, and planned an entire day trip, but sometime up the track from the station, there were cattle in the way and the engineer was capable of safely and efficiently atop the train, the investors were so impressed that they didn't even need to see the rest of the demonstration. However most locomotive owners found it cheaper to keep brakemen around, as there was no way to sue for wrongful death and it was cheaper to replace brakemen then it was to outfit their locomotives with the vacuum brake system. It wasn't until later when the Government began to push for modernization and safer work places that they set in requirements for all new locomotives to be built with vacuum brakes. Over time and decommissioning old worn out locomotives and cars, the vacuum brake became the new standard for the industry.

Glad I used firewood depots to make easy money, now I have plenty! Also, build a firewood depot at the logging camp, fill it, and then you have a backup source. Point on caboose/brake ban and brakemen: that was a _really_ dangerous job! When a railroad considered hiring a brakeman, they would look at a candidate's hands. The amount of missing fingers correlated to how much experience a brakeman had. A brakeman back then would literally run from car to car adjusting the handbrakes! Then George Westinghouse invented air brakes for trains...

Old trains, before they had air breaks, had a caboose that the crew like the conductor and brakemen rode in. The brakeman did use the caboose brakes as well as running along the top to brake each car when necessary.

"Caboose" - American. The early railroad days employed a lot of Swedish and Dutch laborers on the east coast. "caboose" may be American pronunciation of the Dutch word "kombuis" or German word "kabhuse" - both meaning a weather shelter constructed on the deck of a ship. The original cabooses were mostly flat cars with a small house or shed built on to the deck. "Brake Van" - British and European "Crew Car" Australian The jobs of the crew that worked from the caboose were many. They operated the turnouts, coupling and uncoupling cars in sidings, setting car hand breaks when needed. Flagmen were used to signal the engine when positioning to couple or uncouple cars in sidings. They also served as lookouts to monitor coupler slack, load shifts, overheating wheel bearings, dragging debris, and later, to report loss in train brake pneumatic pressure. A break in the air line would leave all the trailing cars, including the caboose, without brakes but go undetected in the engine gauges. There are two brakes; Engine brakes and Train brakes. The latter is the pneumatically controlled brakes on all the cars. As far as I know the crew in the caboose could not apply the train brakes.

Loving this series, i just tried in my own world and two things, turns out the firewood station comes fully loaded with wood and also if you place it just right at the logging camp you can separate two flatcars and continuously load them with logs and unload onto firewood station. Infinite money. Ps the firewood camp needs to have firewood removed from all the stacks in order to start processing the logs. Thank you for all the good videos.

The break van (guards van in my part of the planet) is a place where a crew (guard for me) can be in. Historically, I do believe they had a hand break that they could apply, I assume it would be so if the train split, there could still be someone to stop the train. Trains these days use air breaks where pipes connected together with hoses along the entire train have pressurised air. If the train ever breaks in 2, the hoses would disconnect, bringing the pressure to 1 atmosphere (normal air pressure). That then applies the breaks so no matter if there’s a failure in the break lines, the breaks apply

The Brake Van or the Brake Wagon is the wagon on the back of most trains with the handbrake on it, even on older steam trains they have all breaking on all cars because they have a vacuum break system with each car connected by a pipe, the steam engine at the front generates vacuum which unlocks the breaks, the guard in the Brake van at the back has a valve that can release the vacuum and apply the brakes.

HEY KAN!!! Little insight for you bud. The brake men had the hardest, most dangerous, most important job on old rail. In the old days they were in charge of all the car couplings and train braking. They often ran across the tops of cars to get to each cars individually operated brakes. Like ones in this game. Hope this helps man.

A brakeman is someone who along with the guard, engineer and fireman work a steam train. Break men broke the cars up when there wasn't room for the full length of the train on the unloading track. There is also a difference between a brakeman's car and a caboose. While a caboose is a semi comfortable box for a guard, extra people and small amounts of mail. A brakeman's car is small cold and has only enough room for at most 3 people.

Modern locomotives have air brake systems that allow them to feed pressurized air to the entire length of the train. Giving the every car accurate brake control that is available to the drivers of the locomotives. IIRC the Brakeman of old time trains did operate the hand brakes along the length of the train, and would climb over the load/cars to get to the hand brake wheel on each car in accordance to the weight of the load and the grade of the slope the train was on.

the brake van is just to assist the train brakes or if the train splits due to a coupling braking it lets you stop the cars running away down a hill and use modern trains (not even really that modern) have brakes on all carriages that activate when there is no pressure in the brake line, so incase of a coupling brake the train will stop by it's self older trains had pressure activated brakes that only come on when there is pressure in the brake lines but this didn't stop the cars if the brake line broke or had a big leak

The way modern brakes work is there's a series of pipes and hoses spanning the whole length of the train and it's filled with pressurized air, then when you want to slow down or stop the engineer has a brake handle which essentially acts as a release valve, he pulls the brake handle and the whole train begins to brake, when he wants to continue rolling, every car should have a tank somewhere on it with pressurized air which would then reconnect to the air line and re pressurize the braking mechanism and release the brakes, as for the brakeman's car, never heard of such a thing, a lot of locomotives in the older days of steam had what looked like a garden shed on the back of the tender called a doghouse, and the head end brakeman would sit in the doghouse (if the locomotive had one) and when the engineer gave the signal on the whistle the brakeman would run from car to car gradually setting handbrakes (trains were actually slow enough to do this in the 1800's) and it wasn't uncommon to have more than one brakeman, typically a head end and a tail end brakeman, and I do think cabooses would be a nice piece of rollingstock to add to the game, maybe a bobber and a full size just for different curve radiuses and train lengths.
