Thank you not only for the entertaining builds, but also for sharing your comments on material intolerances to some adhesives, it saves me both time and frustration on my projects. I may never make a gonk droid, but I would've probably tried C.A. glue on that type of plastic.

One of the best things about your videos is that you highlight your mistakes and experiences with different materials. That is so helpful and while we all make mistakes, it's not often people willingly point them out. Thanks for another great video.

I'd seen Gonk builds before. The ones I usually see are either a solid statue display, maybe with some blinking lights. Or they are a costume built so that a person can get inside and walk around. Usually more for kids or smaller people. But I'm watching this and getting ideas about how I could make it more useful. I'm thinking you could rig the feet with RC car stuff and make it where it rolls. So you could drive it around for fun (not accurate I know, since they walk and don't roll, but still fun and easier than having to carry it or cart it around). Then rig it with stuff where you could plug it into a wall outlet and it would have wireless phone charging stations, USB power plug ins, and surge protected outlets, all hidden under access panels. Have it as a fun display and a useable "power station" at cons. So that it's a real power droid. Maybe use the projector to show off products if you have a booth/table in a vendor area. Or a display for a droid builder's or cosplayer's group/club.

I use a torch very lightly to help remove some scratches in some plastics. Its a trial end error and a light hand. You can mess it up fast. Use spray-paint for plastic (fusion).

I always love a good Gonk Build! The plastic used for these Bins is usually polypropylene or polyethylene. These materials have a waxy surface and won't react with most of the glues. Even Hotglue can be an issue since the glue is just comming off when cooled down. There are two solutions for handling PP or PE plastics. You can use an activator that is specially developed for glueing these materials, before using regular superglue. And on the other hand you can hit the surfaces, that you want to glue, with a blowtorch for a split-second. This will restructure the plastic to make it susceptible for superglue.

Yep, great video. The boxes seems to be made of a nylon material. I look forward to see if there is a a problem or a trick to get the paint to stick to it. You are an inspiration to all aspiring prop builders!

Tremendous! I'm wondering if additional ventilation ports on the bottom and top of the droid as well as a cut-out through the repurposed plywood from "Painting Creepy Old Haunt Walls" (I loved that part!) will be needed to prevent overheating of the projector. The positioning of the lateral vent grills may not permit cool air to be drawn into the body/hot air to rise out. Fans could do it, but would add complexity and noise. We wouldn't want your Gonk to look like an R5 with a bad motivator in the middle of a movie!
@VanOaksProps

Thankfully the projector vents out the front face. Great question, though!

A movie displaying GONK!!! Freaking LOVE IT!!!! Can't wait to see the final...I'm also digging the interior base platform you made for stability. What are you doing for airflow to keep the projector cool?
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps 2 жыл бұрын
It vents from the front. So there’s no blockage from the gonk body.

Derek at the beginning when you mentioned the crack and starting over, did you or would you consider just going with it and patching it to make it appear as "damage" or just wear and tear of sorts?
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps 2 жыл бұрын
The crack on my first bin had nearly snapped it in half, so I knew it wasn’t structurally sound. There was a second, smaller crack that I was able to patch. It’s got a small detail on it to cover it up. So, yes, assuming it was salvageable.

I’ve been trying to figure out where I got them since I built the gonk. I had been planning the build for longer than I’ve been making videos and don’t know where I got them. As for the inserts, I’ll have to track down my files.

Why do so many of us even remember that Gonk from the movie? Ugh, watching you deal with the plastic of the bin was painful. Sorry. Had me wondering about making a Gonk out of something more substantial. Where do you source Sintra (sp?)?
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The clear bins aren’t nearly rigid enough if I were to do this again. As for Sintra, I ordered it on Amazon but Plastic Depot in Burbank sells it.
