We begin to prepare for our two paint horses to arrive early spring! Our homestead is going to get a huge renovation outdoors adding fencing, barn build, corral, feed barn etc. We are beginning by building the horse corral so we can beat the winter freezing grounds and get these posts in. We are supporting a local homesteading family who is milling us the wooden slates we need to join the posts. Follow our journey as we prepare the homestead!
SHOP elysiaenglish.com for our barn fundraiser!

2 acres per horse, 1 for grazing, the other for regrowth so you can alternate the grazing. The coral will become a mud hole. Good luck.

Congratulations English Family on your new addition of the horses, I am not sure if they are green meaning untrained but their is a man named Steve Young here on KZbin and he is a universal treasure for all things horses, he is definitely a horse whisperer, watching his videos will give you so much knowledge and insight into a horses thinking. Beautiful, I can wait to see the finish product you will also need to have coats for the horses and a roof for them to take cover. We use to have lots of "PasoFino " horses we have to sell them because we are too old to ride or take care of them we cried our hearts out when that happened but it was the best thing to do for us and for the horses, enjoy them you deserve every minute of your joy.

I’ve always been told that chicken will not lay eggs when their feet are wet. I think you cleaning out the barn and putting new bedding in there is what did the trick. I would think you would have to put your post in deeper than 24 inches? I live a lot further south than you do and I have to do 36 inches otherwise the freeze then thaw from the ice and causes our post to rise.

These horses will have a great life with your family and I know you would have done a lot of research before deciding to make them an addition to your family the only bit of advise I can give is maybe if at all possible start having riding lessons when the weather warms as it will make the journey a lot easier as a green rider and a green horse (inexperienced) .can be hard.NOT saying this to be negative but from personal experience . I hope you have a truly wonderful experience with your new additions to the family when they arrive

WOW! It's just the beginning of everything to come! Once the posts are in the ground and the barn is up, painting those slats in the barn will be a snap! It will keep you out of the weather, snow & rain, until spring. Do you know anyone around that grows hay? That would be a huge help with the barn floor & the chicken coup! HUGS~Donna

I have to tell you a funny story. When Philip jumped down from the atv it reminded me of a time when I was at work and the ac was blowing directly at me. I got on a desk to redirect the ceiling vent. When I went to get down, I meant to do what Philip did but I somehow got my heels, yes I got up on a desk in heels, stuck in the hem of my skirt! I can't stop laughing as I type this. My legs did not straighten out and I fell right to the ground. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 nothing hurt. I was young. Lol

A post hole digger would have been amazing. Hand ones are so brutally hard to use. But much more efficient than digging up that much earth & require no cement. Actully if it's done by even a pto driven tractor ppl. don't use cement. It's not nessary at all with a post hole dug properly. We finally invested in a gas powered one. But it takes alot of strength & physical power to run it as well. The tamping in of a fence post is the most important part, not cement. All the dirt you take out, needs to be tamped back in by hand & a hand tamper. It's time consuming but very important.

Have you ever had horses before? Do yourself a favor & at least invest in a post hole digger. Even by hand would be much better than how much ground you are disturbing. That much dirt lossened is going to cause a problem. It only needs to be a little wider than the post & all the dirt has to be tamped back in you take out to stand straight & secure. There are proably some great utube videos on how to drive & set post holes. Its important to do it properly. To keep the animals in. You won't believe how easily horses can get out & even jump fences. There strength is amazing.
