1000 turns of 10 gauge wire. Pole diameter is 3" round with 3" square base bolted together. 65 amps at 1000 turns gives the required 65000 ampere turns specified by Lucas for recharging rotary magnet magnetos. Rectifier to convert the AC from the welder to the required DC for the magneto. Diodes to prevent back emf when the switch is opened negating any internal sparks in the windings which could burn the enamel and cause a winding short. Excuse the dodgy accent, it was a dare! Just couldn't seem to pull it off for the entire footage.

Very nice build there. I made mine out of a gutted microwave oven transformer with 2 primary coils in series a big capacitor and an IGBT from an old motor driver. ❤

This is a serious apparatus, nice job! You see people making these on YT, with skinny little cores, and a few layers of plastic-insulated building wire, no diodes, etc. and they think they really have something. And they know it works because they put a metal bar across the coils, turn on the juice, and "it's hard to pull off". 😂😅

I'm sure it is a little over engineered but that's the way I like it. You can do it!

If you have to ask if it's bare or enameled, then you shouldn't even be watching the video.

I think it’s a great project, but If you have 2 coils of 1000 turns each wouldn’t that be twice as powerful ? But I see you power them in parallel so they only get half the amperage each then?

I originally used another youtube video to get the concept and construction ideas. Unfortunately it seems the original post has been removed?? I verified the Lucas standards and did a ton of research at the time. I'm no electrical engineer but what you are saying makes sense. Either way, with the amps spread across both coils, you'll still end up with 65000 ampere turns. There is also no reson why you can't exceed the Lucas power specs. The windings could easily handle more amps as it only is on for a cpuple of seconds at a time. Can never have too much magnetism! Cheers

Hi, Adam I'm going to build the same lucas charger as per the original lucas document. The minimum 65,000 amp/turns as I read it is the total number of amps/turns, not per pole/core as they don't actually state otherwise. Do you have 1000 turns total or per coil? Where did you source the wire from?

Thanks for your interest. I do have 1000 turns per pole as they are wired in parallel. You could half the amount of windings to 500 per pole and double the supply current to 130 amps to get the required 65,000 ampere turns. Any welder will easily supply that. As mentioned, the long length of wire in a 1000 turn coil creates a fair resistance so I had to up the output voltage of the supply welder to overcome the resistance (achieved by losing some windings from the primary coil of the welder). Main reason I went for the 1000 turns was I was a little concerned running a large current through the winding causing heat and a potential burn out although I'm sure I was being over cautious! The wire came from OBA which is now called Regal at Wetherill Park NSW but there and several stores around Australia. Number is 1300 888 853. Wasn't totally cheap though. Cheers - Adam

That is a significant amount of copper.

Yes it is. You could get away using half with twice the amps for the same output. I had to buy the whole spool of copper so I used as much of it as I could

Hi how many pounds of wire did each coil use? how many feet of wire do each coil use? how can the gauss be calculated ?

I just wound 1000 turns on each, didn't weigh anything. I bought a spool (25kg?) from Regal, (formerly OBA) at Wetherill Park NSW. Cost a bunch, about $400. If I were to do it again I would go for 500 turns as there is less resistance and the welder output would easily handle the higher amp output to get the desired 65000 ampere turns. I did a lot of research into it all when I built it but at the end of the day the only important thing is reaching the required amps v/s turns (ie 500turns x 130amps). The unit is only on for 3 sec max at a time so any moderate size copper winding will do, say 14 awg or greater (2 to 3mm ideal). As far as the diameter of the iron core, I went for 3 inches but calculations indicated 2.5 inches would suffice. I am one to over engineer things. The additional iron doesn't detract from anything, just making sure the core doesn't get saturated. Hope this all helps. Always great to fire it up!
