As a life-long goat prison designer, I could have saved you some time on this. The best design for a MAXIMUM security goat prison is to make an island in the middle of a pond with an automated food dispenser in the center along with a tape loop of comforting goat sounds. Then you get a big shark or a Nile Crocodile in the pond (optional). Name for this prison: Goatcatraz. You're welcome.

When I was seven, my family moved states, from Alabama to Mississippi. We brought with us an old tomcat that had been living at our Alabama house before we ever bought the house. His name was Thorsby after the name of the town in Alabama. Once we got to Mississippi, the normally very active tom laid about, not exploring his new territory, just eating and sleeping. About a month later, Thorsby disappeared. We were distraught, but somehow, my mom had an inkling he might be trying to go "home" (to Thorsby) and she called the lady that had bought our house and told her to be on the lookout for him. Sure enough a couple of months later, Thorsby showed up at the Alabama house. The lady called my mom and mailed us pictures (this was before email). He was thin, his pawpads were worn down almost to the bone, his fur was a fright, and he'd clearly been in some scrapes, but it was him. Thorsby had to travel over 200 miles, across two major highways and a river. He recovered and went on to live very happily at his old home with his new family. I've since heard stories of cats traveling over 500 miles to reunite with owners, including traveling to places where they'd never been before. In one instance, a cat found his human 3 states away where he was being treated at Mayo Clinic. They are incredible creatures.

Out with any plastics in goat areas. Yes to the electric fence at the top. Others have found a second run about half-way down will keep them from pushing the fence. As others have said, goats hate to get wet. They won’t go out in rain or if it’s actively snowing. Yes, they like to sleep in ‘beds’ such as bins, troughs, sinks, tubs, shelves or old drawers. They’ll need lots of straw and or wood shavings to absorb urine. Yes to anything they can climb on out in their yard, but keep far from fence! Love the Wethering Heights! Love your goats!

Love the new setup. As a word of warning goats love to chew on plastic so I'd remove that immediately so they don't eat it, (one of mine will eat plastic like it'd candy do I speak from experience here). If they're using the stairs I'd say seal off the second opening, or make another wooden door and use that opening to clean their space out. Definitely a good call putting electric fencing up in front of the welded wire. I learned the hard way when I first got goats they will destroy welded wire fences if they can find a way to break it. You should build them as a platform/ramps to climb on, do they have something yo fo when they het bored/run out of stuff to eat. Mine love to sun themselves on the wooden one I build for them, (roughly 2x4ft which has a set of old stairs going up to it)

Wethering Heights - absolutely love it. But poor Toby, looking over at his old home, seemed really sad. You may have to raise the other house to keep him happy - no big deal, right?
@fionawallace5803 ай бұрын
Poor Toby- he keeps getting evicted from his home for other animals. He got kicked out of the first shed for birds if I remember, then you built him another house and a goose moved in, then Abby took over his space, now the quack house is gone… I feel he should have his own permanent place that doesn’t get swapped out for other animals on a whim. Toby is the top dog. Couldn’t weathering heights be put at the larger shed for the goats that they were originally in? Why did they need to move? Toby likely liked the quack house because it’s central in his guarding area and has a good line of sight to the gate and to the whole area he needs to protect. Feel Toby gets a bit shafted… and he loves you so…

“Wethering Heights” I love it! Also love your stories of the farm, you have such a talent. I’ve kept Pygmys, Nigerian Dwarfs & LaManchas. In my experience, I think you’re going to need at least double the amount of T posts to keep the goats from stretching that fence out to the point where it’s no longer secure when they rub up against it. A wooden rail fence would be ideal but it’s probably a little late in the year to do that. In my experience as long as the goats don’t have anything near the fence, inside the yard that they can climb up on to then jump over the fence from there, they won’t go over a fence of that height. Unless you’re also trying to keep predators out with the electric wire, I don’t think you need it. As far as the goat shed goes, I would keep both the ramp and stairs. Goats love to explore & get into little nooks. I even had a goat climb into a little TSC type chicken coop meant for about 4 chickens, lol. On the ramp, you could put roof shingles or some other type of abrasive material to help keep their hooves worn down. They’ll be running up and down it even if the door is closed so you might as well make it work for you. Inside my barn I have igloo style dog houses & old water troughs filled with straw bc they love a cozy place to sleep. That might be a little tight for your shed but I have seen some people put triangular shaped shelves in the corners for goats to get on top of to sleep. That will help keep them out of their droppings. They’re going to need something to play on inside the yard as well. This is a good time of year to find used toddler outdoor toys online that your goats can play on. I’m so glad that you fell in love with the goats, I was sure you would.

If you leave the stairs for the goats to use, make sure you put some kind of anti-skid tape down because goats can wipe out on the stairs and I have known them to brake a leg or two from falls. The ramp isn't any safer, in fact the ramp is asking for problems because goats can be very clumsy and if you don't want any extra vet bills, put something on those stairs and get rid of the ramp.

No shade on current sign, but get someone from ETSY to make a very gothic appearing (and waterproof) sign. It will add to the ambience, assuming the goats do not try to consume or play with it. BTW I know most farmers would totally troll me for saying this, but it is SO adorable the way the goats follow Morgan and seem to look lovingly into his face. I think your name for the goat pen is perfect! Goats are unaffected by catnip. However, if you have bobcats, lynx, or mountain lions around your farm, they might react to it. Of course, if they manage to get to the catnip, you have bigger problems than a bunch of buzzed felines!
