I typically binge watch this channel rather than watch every time a video is uploaded but I'll tell you why I always come back, you aren't pretending to build budget engines for everyday guys that in reality end up costing 20 grand rather each engine seems to be built specifically catered to what it will be spending its life as and I just love that. You aren't trying to sell parts to me it doesn't come across like one big 20 minute commercial like other car shows do.

No better channel, I really like that you cover so many engines from the FE and 23 degree SBs to the Roush-Yates Ford and SB2s. The cool thing is that the building is all as detail oriented from one through the others. Thanks and I am a real engine geek, regardless of make or vintage. Blair Patrick built a 400 ci FE that made near 600 hp at EMC with iron 352/390 ported heads. It is details and man you guys deliver on every video!

I been trying to tell all these guys who think thier 300 up chevy 350 motors in thker trucks or little hotrkds are fast to get a used circle track engine like a modified or latemodel engine cause our oval track motors are more reliable then anything they can assemble on thier own for the price of a good barley used engine. And njce thing is if its still a good motor to have it refreshed os only 1500-2k and you have a 700 hp N/A hot rod motor for less then 10k. Yes you can get a nice used one for 5500-10k.or even order gms partnumber crate motor 602 which is a sealed vortec steel head and block 350 that makes 350 hp stock but if you add better valve springs, 850 frm VDL holly based nascar double pumper carb with a 6al msg box and blaster 2 coil 1.5 inch carb spacer 180 degree circle track cross over headers and your exhaust pipe shpild exist right under pasenger side to make the most power. With that setup on it mine made 402 rear wheel horsepower in my asphalt oval track latemodel truck which is a super latemodel with a fiberglass nascar truck series loomkng body on it. Or go with the 604 part number the makes 450-500 hp GM says dofference is all aluminum and different cam and crank and pistons and bore

It really is a matter of which of the 4 major sanctioning bodies in the US someone competes with. For Dirtcar UMP its pretty much fair game as this motor is. Its got to be a steel block, has to be a wet sump, has to be a push rod motor, and on a single 2 or 4 barrel carb. In other parts of the US rules limiting what components can be in the valve train are more common. Fuel its a choice of Race Gas or Methanol. There are limited Modified Classes, which do have more rules including CI, Carb, valve train.

Super nice engine .. I just hope he never has to explain why the oil pickup tube is almost smashed in half ...(11:30) ... that is terrible !!!
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 3 жыл бұрын
The curve of the tube is flattened a bit from driving the pickup into the pump, but it is far from smashed in half. The pickup tube can flow much more than the pump, so it doesn't hurt anything. Thanks for watching.
@HarryT9
@HarryT9 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheHorsepowerMonster ... I clearly know why it’s in the condition it’s in ... you know as well as I do that that method of installing the pickup is outdated . There are many tools to install it now, plus many more options that don’t require a BFH. Also what about setting the min/max distance between the pickup face and pan bottom ? Or way to prevent the pickup from falling off. Both are real problems to a quick , high reving race engine .
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 3 жыл бұрын
@@HarryT9 Well, you said it was smashed in half and I simply said that it clearly wasn't and the reduction in tube diameter isn't enough to affect flow of the oil pump. And yes, he definitely did check pickup clearance to the bottom of the pan. I simply didn't show it. I do lots of engine builds, and I try not to show the same steps every time. The pickup cannot fall off, it has a tab on it near the pickup screen that bolts to the top of the pump. I am assuming when you mention a way to prevent the pickup from falling off that you may be talking about welding the pickup to the pump. That's not necessary here.

Magnetize the socket or use a magnetic socket or epoxy a small rare earth magnet into the socket.
@44R0Ndin
@44R0Ndin 3 жыл бұрын
Got a nice old-timer trick for you if you don't have any magnets. Get yourself some chewing gum, chew it, stuff it in the socket, then stuff the nut or bolt in the socket. Gum will stick the two together enough for you to install the bolt or nut, but not so much that you can't pull it off. If you don't want to wear out your jaw muscles chewing gum for this, you can get blue-tack or poster adhesive that works about the same but you don't have to chew it. Can't say the same for those rare earth magnets, sometimes those ones are too strong for their own good, most of the time if you want to hold a nut or bolt a ferrite magnet (weaker) is the better choice because you can pull on the socket extension and come back with a socket and no fastener instead of either a socket and fastener, or no socket and just the extension bar.

I just use Schaeffer's 9000 series 20w50 motor oil for assembly lube in the usual areas. It's clingy and will stay put until you get the engine assembled, in the car, and primed. For high pressure areas, like a flat tappet cam lobe, I use some high-molly grease. Never had any issues this way. 🤷🏻 Like you said, everyone has their own ways and there isn't just one "correct" way.

Are the lifter bore bronze bushings used for less friction , or for larger diameter roller lifters ?
@vengeanceizmine9878
@vengeanceizmine9878 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, neither. Don't know their reasoning why they used them, but they are not a necessity when you are just stepping up in lifter size, and not mandatory for wear. It is application specific, but they are mainly used for worn lifter bores, lifter bores that are too short as the bushing offers more stability for the lifter as the bushings are longer, or when lifter bores are not positioned correctly, and/or lifter bore angle or location is modified from stock. Most aftermarket blocks with ample material around the bores don't need them unless you run big lobe lift cam profiles. Hope this helps a bit.
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 4 жыл бұрын
VenganceizMine is correct, but I might emphasize two things that apply here. With high lift cams, bronze lifter bores can help keep from sticking a lifter. The bronze is "slicker" than a bare iron bore, and with an agressive high lift cam lobe you get a lot of side loading of the lifter against the bore. Also, if you are running roller lifters you need less oil than a flat tappet. A bushing is an easy way to change the metering hole from the oil gallery to the ID of the lifter bore.

Dumb question I’m sure how long do the cam roller bearings last… first time seeing that I’m 54 and last racing we did was mid or late 80s
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but the answer is "It depends." Lots of race engine builders will replace roller cam bearings at every rebuild, because they don't want to take a chance of a roller bearing going through the engine. Stronger spring pressure shortens the life of a roller cam bearing. Also, the narrower bearings used in the Chevy R07 or Ford FR9 NASCAR race engines makes for a shorter lifespan. But I've had guys tell me that the roller cam bearings they used in the D3 headed Fords (Windsor based with a Cleveland-style cylinder head) lasted forever. Thanks for watching
@davelowets
@davelowets 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheHorsepowerMonster Yep.. The only downside to a roller bearing is that if one DOES fail, the little needle rollers scatter throughout the engine, and the result ends up looking like tiny grenades went off all over inside of it trashing everything. Better safe than VERY sorry.

A 750 carb, with an 850 baseplate is what a 950 is... however it is NOT 950cfm. It's just the name. They do not flow 950cfm. More like 830. Bigger carb on this would definitely make more, but it isn't a drag race application. There is a reason everything used seems "small"...
@davelowets
@davelowets 2 жыл бұрын
Those drivers need a controllable, linear, response to the throttle at all RPMs. Not a huge carb that only runs right at W.O.T. and at the rev limit. The driver doesn't just get out on the track and hold the throttle to the floor like a drag racer would. They need the throttle response that only the small carb will give them. Smooth, predictable, responsive power is critical in this kind of racing, way more than just top-end power. Throttle response

Usually they sort of force you into the older designs by requiring a cam-in-block design and a distributor with a single coil. In a class like this they also say it has to be an iron block, but the Super Late Models and such can use an aluminum block. Some of those guys use an LS by adapting a distributor and coil ignition, but that's about as exotic as it gets. Thanks for watching.

is break-in oil just bad oil? does it come with grit?
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 4 жыл бұрын
Not really, but sort of. Break in oil is formulated to still provide a good hydrodynamic wedge so that the bearings will be protected (they don't need to break in after all) but not have the same lubricity (slickness) as a regular motor oil. This helps the rings to seat and if you are running flat-tappet lifters to get them to mate to the cam lobes. It isn't bad for an engine. I know many engine builders that will run break in oil on the dyno and tell the racers to run the engine with the oil in it for the first night before swapping out to their regular oil. Hope this helps.

I wonder how with all the different gearing they can keep the engine in the sweet spot for tq so the driver is coming off the corner with power to pull away. Is that math or feel? I mean a tire size differences could change the power band and shift points, there's so many variables. Am I overthinking this?
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 4 жыл бұрын
No, you aren't overthinking it. There is a lot of math that can help where you can plug in the size of the track, tire size and torque to get you close, but there are also other factors that fall into the "feel" category when it comes to selecting the best gear ratio. The driver's driving style is a big one, but the chassis setup also affects a lot (forward bite, tight/loose, etc) Thanks for watching!
@rossracing6433
@rossracing6433 4 жыл бұрын
Well for one thing, us dirt track guys pretty much all run in direct drive at all times on the track due to the type of transmissions we run, so that eliminates shift points as a factor. It's not super hard to get your gearing dialed in at least close. Just gotta find the right balance between not bogging out of the corners and not hitting the rev limiter too hard at the end of the straights.

What does the 6" rods do change stroke ?
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 4 жыл бұрын
No, it is the crankshaft that controls stroke. But using a longer rod improves the rod/stroke ratio. If you have a long stroke with a short rod, the crank throw will try to push the piston through the cylinder wall. Having a longer connecting rod will help improve the angle so more force is straight up and down, improving the engine's efficiency. Hope that hleps and thanks for watching.

@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if this applies to the "A" Mod class, which is the top class for the UMP Mods where this will race, but the UMP does still allow engine claims. It is pretty restrictive, though. I don't know it all, but these days you can only claim the engine of the winning driver and if you are going to make a claim you have to finish that race on the lead lap. So you can't roll out there with some clapped out junkyard motor and claim a legit race engine for $550. If you are going to finish on the lead lap at these races you've got to be pretty competitive yourself. Plus, claiming engines instead of investing in your own racing program is a pretty dirt move in most people's books, and anyone who does it usually gets shunned by the other racers in the pits. It can get pretty lonely if you are that guy, so it is very rare. But you are right, I'd hate to lose a beast like this to an engine claim. Thanks for watching!
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 4 жыл бұрын
@Mike B In the lower levels of oval track racing, it is a way to try to keep teams from way outspending the competition. Usually if you are in the top three or so anyone that finished below you can claim your engine. Usually about $700 or so. But the reality is the practice is frowned upon by competitors so it is rarely done.
