Hey everyone, I’m still here!! Sorry, I’ve been posting updates of my progress to twitter, but I’ll keep this post updated as well from now on! So that you know what’s going on if you don’t follow me on twitter. :) ~ From the 9th to the 31st of October: I’m sorry, I wasn’t keeping track here of when everything happened as I didn’t expect it to take this long for me to be able to get the next video update done. But to summarize: I managed to get the money to buy all of the electrical parts and contact an electrician. However he ended up messing me around, so I then had to book a second electrician to come out and give me a quote, who then also messed me around.. ~ The 23rd of October: Whilst I was waiting to hear back from the second electrician, I spent a couple of days drawing my garage in SketchUp, so that not only would it be easier to visualise the work ahead, but also so that the next video visually has an extra dimension to it. :) ~ The 31st of October: The third electrician is booked to come tomorrow to give me a quote, the first 2 never got back to me. So much time wasted. -_- I did manage to get a quote for getting a new door fitted though!! It'll be £850. So I now have the next target to start saving for. :) ~ The 2nd of November: I want to say a huge, massive thank you to everyone who has supported the channel by donating. I know that I don’t deserve it at all. But it is thanks to you that I’m able to not only afford to get all of the electrics and lighting done, but now also afford to get the new door installed too!! I really can’t thank you all enough.

Remember, Linus started in his garage and look at him now. It's great that you're taking time to make it right, rather than just filming a video anywhere, and I'm sure that will show in your production values in the future. Tech videos recently have been taking off based on very budget hardware. You don't need to get the latest parts to draw an audience, people want to know what they can get for cheap. Some of the most popular videos are $1 CPUs and $10 GPUs and showcasing the performance with older games and applications in a pound per performance ratio, rather than beating out the new technology. If the small revenue can be earned by doing these DIY videos to create something like this, then you're well on your way back to the top. Good luck with everything, and hope to see you on the other side :)

I wouldn't call Linus clueless when he created the OS that currently dominates in servers, mobile devices, and "large" embedded systems. In fact, desktop is about the only place it doesn't (yet) dominate.

Lauren is clearly worried about her channel's success and is a bit worried after leaving it for so long. I was merely trying to give her some encouragement to carry on with her achievements, because that's what she needs right now. Instead, you want to nitpick my comments, instead of providing encouragement for the channel.

Yay your back. We are all very happy about trhis. Being halfway across the world makes me sad at this point because this is a project i could have helped you with. But still its good to see your up and running, Now you may want to consult a few local professionals because some things are done differently in the US and UK but you basically want to make sure you get a vapor barrier between your interior surface and the masonry, Usually a thick plastic sheeting does the job , but at the same time you want to make sure that the moist air that gets stopped by the vapor barrier has somewhere to go usually straight up to the soffit or roof venting.
@jaradcolefield

And as a note i wonder since you are already an established reviewer if yyou could reach out to some of the companies that make the products you need so thaty you could review them as you used them and maybe get some of the stuff you need for free. Like Dryloc by UGL for the walls and owens corning or dow for the foamboard insulation
@Starchface
@Starchface 7 жыл бұрын
I am not an expert but I am thinking there may be a coating of some sort that can be applied to seal the exterior, maybe some sort of tar or something, to prevent moisture from penetrating the masonry from the outside. Otherwise I think there will be a lake forming inside. England is very wet and I don't have much confidence in those bricks.

I like the plan for the garage and creating a dedicated filming space.. I'm dead impressed with what you've done so far (good DIY skills)! Definitely go for the vlogs on the conversion project. I thing everyone would find that fascinating to watch. You don't need to apologize over taking a break from filming. I think YouTubing should be fun for the creator as well as the viewer, and personal life and heath (both physical and mental) should always be the priority. I've had to deal with some mental health issues like anxiety and stress, and I put work on hold while I got myself back on track. I empathize with anyone going through something similar! It will be good to have TastyPC back on the tube, you have always put out great quality content. Best wishes Lauren.. Hope to catch an update vlog soon :-) x

Sounds like you did your homework and understand what you are up against trying to keep moisture out. I did some quick research and found you need to make sure your weep holes are there/ cleaned out and working so the absorbed moisture has a place to go. Also read some folks install a vent at the top in the brick wall to allow it to breathe. I cant wait to see when you get it done and how great it will look.

Yay you are back, never feel the need to apologise, your health must always come first, so just do what you have to do. For the garage, I'd get some tanking compound on the floor/lower wall to stop the water seeping in, otherwise it'll go a bit mouldy under your insulation. You did the right thing by trying to limit the water penetration starting on the outside, by sorting the guttering and banked soil.
@Ewookie1gj

As far as the garage mods, I might have some suggestions. For the floor, if you want wood, I'd suggest putting some weather treated 2x2 strips down (or the UK equivalent, 45 or 50 mm?). Shim those with wedge shaped wooden shims to level the floor. (They usually sell shims dirt cheap.) Lay some 3/4" (or 20mm?) plywood on top of that, so it won't give while walking on it. Then finish the floor with whatever surface material you'd like. For the walls, I saw some 2x4s against the walls. I would suggest putting more up at distances that would accommodate the insulation you want to use. They’re not structural, so they can be wider apart than wall studs, which should make that easier. Once the insulation is in, you might want to cover that with what we call green board. It's a type of drywall that resists mold. Then, for even more sound proofing, you could add some acoustic panels, or some acoustic foam. (That last option might actually look cool.)

I think the bricks would be a nice background feature and it would be a real shame to cover them up. If you want to stop water getting to them the just paint the outside with sealant. Also the floating floor is a good idea, especially if you have flooding issues, though whatever you can do to channel water away from the building would be a good idea. Keep the updates coming!!

Lauren if you have access to the exterior of the 2 external walls? You can get clear waterproofing liquids you paint on, so it will not effect the look outside of the garage. Also rather than fix timbers to the external walls, i would build a stud wall slightly away from the walls, fixing the bottom and top timbers to the floor/ roof joists. :)

Welcome back Lauren, what a treat to see to see your new video! Regarding moisture intrusion, especially through the brickwork, you might consider DuPont's Tyvek® Homewrap® product. It's commonly used for construction in the United States to act as a barrier against air, water, and wasted energy. It's still permeable, however, and so allows water vapor to pass, reducing the risk of mold or condensation damage. You can find it in large home improvement stores like the USA's Home Depot. A sheet between the brick wall and your wall covering might be just the thing to seal your production environment against the elements. As you probably already know, Tyvek is the same material used in some durable expedited shipping envelopes such as those from FedEx. And years ago it was commonly used for PC floppy disk envelopes. Whatever you decide, be certain your solution still allows adequate ventilation for safety. A totally sealed space would not be good!

I have an idea which would allow you to keep your lovely brick look, coat the wall in epoxy that will seal from leaks as well as allow you to have a nice finish and preserve the brick work. The rough it up a little with fine grade sand paper to give it a Matt finnish

Hey Lauren, Glad to see a new video, from you!:) I like to watch videos on Building Projects. So, I for one. Will be watching, if you make some Project Videos. I often do research on Home Building and Wood Working Projects. One of type of Insulation, that I find interesting, is Icynene Spray Foam Insulation. It comes in both, Open Cell & Closed Cell Types. They also, have great Sound Absorption Properties. So, they could be good choices. The Closed Cell, would be best for moist environments. It wont absorb as much moisture or water. You can get Spray Foam Kits, to do whole rooms. I wouldn't try it with the small spray cans. It would probably cost more, than the Kits. And may not be enough "Closed Cell" enough to work well in your environment. Foam Board is a quite bit cheaper. And you can get it with a Reflective Sheet, on one side. Which could help reflect the outside sound - noise, away from your room. If you put the reflective side, next to the Brick Walls. But, it may absorb too much moisture, in your building. Fiber Glass Roll Insulation, is probably the cheapest route. But, it's horrible to work with. It gets in my skin and makes me bleed, every time I get it on me. And if it gets really wet. It will sag, and bunch up in the bottom of your wall cavity. You can use other insulation materials as well, like cellulose, mineral wool, and recycled cotton. Fiberboard Ceiling Tiles or Ceiling Panels can be a cheaper alternative to Acoustic Tiles (Fiberboard material is a good Audio Sound Absorbent Dampener). It could be use on both the Ceiling and Walls. Of course, the cost of building a real Audio - Video Studio, would be enormous. But, knowing the basic principles, can be very helpful, www.mixonline.com/news/facilities/10-tips-small-room-acoustics/426864. When planning and building a home AV Studio. I like making videos too. I use to mix sound for live bands and have done some audio recording, as well over the years. Here's my music Web Site, donsongs.com/. So, I know, that you can do good Audio and Video Recordings, in many environments. With some decent equipment and a little know how. Such as your previous Videos on the TastyPCTV Channel. They are some of the best Produced and Technically, well done videos I have seen on KZbin. You are also, a wonderful on camera Presenter, as well. So, I hope you are able to build your AV Studio and expect to see even better videos, from you in the future. I find this whole subject, very interesting. Over the years, I have put many interesting How To Videos in my Playlists on my Dweb98 KZbin Channel. But, it's hard to find certain videos again, with the Channel Search Tool. I also have allot of links, to Written material too. Too many to put in this comment. So, I made a Post on my Blog with some links here... donsdeals.blogspot.com/2017/10/building-mini-workshop-studio-garage.html The first four sets of links, have some good info on this subject... Have Fun with your Studio Project... Don
