As a Father and Grandfather I feel the need to give you some friendly advice.The mold will continue to be a big problem because the garage hasn't been insulated and you may become ill breathing it in if you stay in there too long. A dehumidifier won't do any good without insulating the ceiling and walls first. Also that door should have never ever been used as it is an interior door only. A steel insulated exterior door with weather stripping on the frame (or any exterior door used or new) should have been installed. The door you have now is a hollow core door that has no insulating properties whatsoever. It has a wood frame on 4 sides with cardboard in the center for strength and it is famous for soaking up water (mostly from the ground up). The hinges are rusting because they are interior hinges and have no rust proof properties to them. Also if you get some estimates and some of the people don't show up, you shouldn't call them again. And when you get an estimate, try negotiating him down and ask if he can do better about the price.Most important, Never pay until the work is done. The most you should do is say I will give you half now, and half after it is finished and I am satisfied. Cheers from Canada.
@Ironbuket7 жыл бұрын
Good tips. She wont listen though, others including myself warned her about the whole concept when it was first suggested. Looks like she plans to install an extractor to try to deal with the moisture she will create when shut in there OR the extractor is because she thinks its going to get hot in there. With no ceiling, a single skinned wall and a floor with no cavity or insulation under it...
@TactMod7 жыл бұрын
This(Randar) statement is 100% true. I'm an estimator for a large lumber supply company in the U.S., and my jaw dropped when I saw an interior door installed in your garage. It's incorrect, un-safe, and wont last past 1 year. I greatly encourage you to re-negotiate with your builder to install a Steel exterior door. They have them with very nice, wood grain textures, if a more natural look is what you want. Good luck, God bless.

Hi Lauren - Great to see you back and YOU are doing a good job on your garage, the person who fixed your exterior door has put an internal door and frame in and can not fit a 5 lever mortise lock properly, most external doors open inwards so when shut they seal tight to the rebates outside seal to stop the weather getting round the door, also a weather strip on the bottom of the door helps move the water away form the bottom of the door - try and get them to do a proper job - I wish we could come and help you with all of this work to save you money and get you up and running again, Great video - Love you Channel.

Any sort of sealant on the bottom of the door won't make a difference. It's a standard hollow core door - any amount of moisture is going to pretty much ruin the door. A better door would be recommended (also for security.)

For those wondering, this is the type of door that was installed www.lawsons.co.uk/product/2440x1220x44mm-exterior-door-blank/j05500010 I know that there are much better options, but this was the best one that I could find in the budget that I had.
@Jconway6517 жыл бұрын
In the long term I don’t think treating it will stop it expanding. Better to let it expand, trim it to fit then seal. It’s always good to leave any wood products unwrapped in area they will be installed for a week or so before installation. That way they should expand before installation and won’t move to much after. UPVC doors are ideal because they can be fitted in almost any location and weather and the movement is minimal.
@profosist7 жыл бұрын
One comment about the door, more the hinges you used. Could you not just take the pin out and take the door off? I say this since you may have things in there worth some money in the future.
@Ironbuket7 жыл бұрын
That supplier link explains a lot. If you visit the site you quickly realise that there is no menu option for external doors ONLY INTERNAL DOORS. Although the door linked mentions external in the description, the website mentions the external door range is not listed on the website and is only availble to view in store. The door linked is within the INTERNAL DOOR section. The external tag on that product may be a typo... Let someone that knows what they are doing pick the parts... It doesnt even have a rain deflector... Used solid wood exterior doors on ebay from £5 up...
@TastyPC7 жыл бұрын
I didn’t pick the door, the builders did. This isn’t the exact one though, if you Google “external fire door” you will see them in other retailers sold as an external door as well. The mistake made by the contractors was that they took too much material from the bottom of the door and nothing from the top. They also did nothing to seal the cut. There’s no rain deflector as obviously I wanted to paint the door first. The plan was ALWAYS to use a cheap door as a temporary measure and then upgrade to PVC after a few years use. The really messy part of cutting the hole for the frame is now out of the way so it won’t be too disruptive to upgrade later.

Doing some of the DIY on a project yourself is both the most terrifying and most rewarding thing you'll ever do. I imagine doubly rewarding in your case because of how unique the project is. Agree with what you say in the video, drilling definitely the scariest thing. I bought a wreck as my first home recently. After the costs of gas and electric, I couldn't afford to get my damp proofing done by a contractor. Thankfully I know how to plaster, and I researched it to make sure I got the right chemical for salt neutralising and waterproofing. What I wasn't prepared for in advance was having to drill 200mm long, 12mm wide holes through the mortar of the 240mm-ish thick exterior walls (didn't have precise dimensions so had to use a bit of imagination to get decent measurements), without actually penetrating to the outside, for my Dryrod DPC silicone-based rods. Don't think I've ever been so nervous in my entire life as when I drilled that first hole. But when you see the progress and realise that it was you that made that happen through planning and through actual labour - totally worth it. Glad to hear you in good humour and optimistic about the project despite it taking longer than you'd hoped for so far. Hope the rest of it goes well for you.

enough people have commented on the door, so i'll leave that. As far as the mold is concerned, i would recommend putting bleach in a pump sprayer, like a garden sprayer/weed sprayer and just hitting all the mold spots, maybe even the whole bay that mold is in. It will kill it, and prevent new mold from forming for a while. If you use 'outdoor' bleach it won't smell to bad or cause respiratory problems. Nice progress!

You have a "hollow core" interior grade door. I am sure it was the lowest cost option but there is a reason for that. The real problem is that your "builders" installed an interior grade door on an exterior wall. No legitimate builder would do that. Not to mention the threshold has no slope to divert rainwater. Your hinges are also interior grade never meant to be exposed to the weather, not a "bad lot". You need to get someone who understands construction to look at this project ASAP and stop listing to your builders now! Withhold any payment until this gets resolved.

As you said, the builders should have fitted trim (12mm hardwood lipping) top and bottom of the door. It looks like there is lipping to the sides. Once done and dry, several coats of paint or exterior varnish will work, especially to the top and bottom. Good luck Lauren and don't get disheartened with these things - they are only blips in the greater scheme.
