Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

Man, that block durability update really went a long way for making builds like this more viable. I remember making a monowheel several months ago and the poor thing just kept falling to pieces with every ground collision

Interesting choice to use distance sensors, seems like the natural choice might be angle sensors to drive your rotation since they don't depend on detecting the ground which could be a problem on rougher terrain.

So, the lean in the opposite direction is actually the application of physics on rotating bodies. Like. Your monowheel is the wheel of a motorcycle, if you wanna turn to the left you start with a turn to the right, and then the bike will lean to the left, and you can then turn to the left. The reason for this is that on rotating bodies, the force vector is applied 90 degrees out of phase. So a turn to the left is a turn forward, which creates a lean to the right as the force vector is now on the forward side of the wheel. Then turning the wheel to the right applies a torque to the front of the wheel and the turn to the right is a straight line.

i knew the motorcycle turn method would be in the comments already! I think you're right, scrapman needs to lean the opposite direction of what he wants to go before starting a turn. It's wild to see a real life technique show up in a simulation like this!

I think when you tilt your wheel to the left the gyros outside of the wheel is trying to stay straight by pushing to the right causing the entire wheel to drift to the right.

Which is also why he kept flipping over, both sides were cancelling each other out.

Two things; 1. The Faulty Turning at the End -- the turning was doing weird things cause it was trying to turn the seat as opposed to the entire wheel, to fix this you could put the turning gyro(s) on the outside where the stabilizing gyros are. 2. The Propulsion -- you could use angle sensors (or as I like to call them, angleometers) in replacement of distance sensors, as they'll be simpler and probably work better in your favor, and on that note, you can attach the stabilizers directly to the wheel (the ones you used for propulsion) only on the opposite side so they point inward.

Love watching your thinking process while trying to solve a problem. Not sure what useful things you might be able to take from this video for a multiplayer game. Maybe the janky steering that would change which way you are turning all the time. Maybe if the weird steering could be isolated and added to everyone's build it would be a interesting wrench to throw into the problem and make things funny. Kind of like trying to back up multiple trailers gets exponentially more complicated.

Cool idea! Some thoughts: - When using multiple gyro's you generally want all their axis to meet, ideally in the center of mass. Having 2 rows side by side like that isnt going to do much as they are (in a way) fighting each other, this is the case in any direction/configuration but its most notable when trying to fight gravity, gyro's on the same angle but not sharing an actual axis just appear to be pretty weak even if that does work fine in space. - For your keep-upright, why don't you just have 8 gyro stabilizers rigidly attached to the inside of the wheel, essentially pointing sideways (inside the wheel, not out of the sides of wheel) from the current gyro stabilizers? and toggle the two that point upward when matching sensors see ground? - Finally, if you really wanna challenge yourself, surely you've realized near the end there that if you could control the time between sensor seeing ground and gyro stabilizer turning on then you could make it accelerate/decelerate? with a piston, some sensors and some logic that should totally be achievable. Sooo, Version2 when? ^^

It would make certain aerodynamic blocks be actually useful, also do you know how much it pisses me off that you have a motorcycle seat where you can't place an engine in the middle? And also they need to adjust the drag points on it

@@rltt379 Thats precisely what makes building vehicles fun. The challenge of trying to figure out how to make things fit together, and look nice. I love it. It makes the game have a huge, and very exciting learning curve. Also, if you want to have an engine centered on a motorcycle seat you can put a piston on the leftmost attachment point on the back of the motorcycle seat. Then make sure it is pointing out to the right. Put a Tube Elbow on the end an make sure it's pointing up. Put an engine on top of the Tube Elbow, with one side of it being over the piston. Then in the pistons settings, remove all controls, and set the starting position to 0.17, and the speed to 100. Then when you spawn it in, the engine should be centered.

@@Dunch0717 dude, you wouldn't have to use it. But the fact that your solution is centering by making the craft not symmetrical is irritating. It would simply make more sense if pieces had more connectivity. Having it on wheels enable other kinds of mechanisms as well. And there's no reason why putting things on half blocks shouldn't be a thing. You would also be able to make certain crafts more aerodynamic and you wouldn't have to rely on the connector clips as much for optimisation. It would also help with smaller aircrafts having a shot at flying straight.

@@rltt379 You could just put a piston on the other side and set it to the same settings, or just use two engines and ditch the pistons entirely. I don't see how the ability to attach things to wheel would be beneficial when one could just us a rotating servo. Being able to attach things to half block would make building certain thing much harder and it would most likely deter some new players. It would also make vehicles go up in complexity much faster even if you aren't using the half blocks, because it's another thing for the computer to calculate. I've never had problems with making small aircraft fly straight, but it usually is just as simple as setting some wing pieces to a certain angle or something. I just think overall it would get rid of a huge chunk of the skill curve, which makes the game fun, it would make vehicles much more limited because of higher complexity, and it would possibly deter newer players because of the more complicated system.

What a crazy way to finally understand what my buddy was blabbering about when he was trying to convince me that counter steering was a real thing for motorcycles. "Dude you gotta turn left to go right" "wtf are you talking about?" Tried it on a bicycle just to shut him up and fell on my face. This is a nice demonstration of what he was trying to explain to us

the turning problem is because the treads are angled on the outside and therefore are turning you in the opposite direction (which is why when the angle of the hinges was bigger it worked) so you need flat treads or to have the angle of the treads be a lot greater. love the vids

I think this is an example of countersteering (maybe), which also happens in real life on bikes and motorcycles. If you push the steering to the left it will tilt you to the right side which result in going into the right direction instead of left. And vice versa.

The wider side of a wheel naturally has a larger surface area, in effect applying more force. Your wheel should realistically always turn towards the side that has the smaller diameter.

cool build but what if you replace/build in normal wheels for the suspension to help with dampening cuz i think the rubber from wheels handle impacts better than normal blocks and have more grip so on the hole monowheel you have several real wheels and not your cool looking suspension

I think the big problem with the leaning was using the gyro block, it was what made it hard to come out of the lean because of its dampening. Might try replacing the gyros with helicopter engines. Idk tho.

You should try to make something that is able to land on asteroids, moving ones not the random floating ball, cuz im making a asteroid landing ship but the physics are broken, so if you can figure it out without using anchor pins would be pretty cool :D

You can actually put a stabilizer on a 0% strength servo to make it always face upwards. I've used that to make a gimbal jet without a gimble jet.

Oh thank you. I´ve been watching for weeks now how to mix logic-inputs with key-inputs. Guess makes sense to use an OR-Gate. Would have been nice to implement them directly but nice work-around.

As you play with those you may run into some situations. Game doesn't like to turn a one button press into a constant input, even with hold. You can use a distance sensor pointed inward at a block for a constant on, or an altitude block always triggering. If you have a sensor+keybind into an XOR which feeds into an AND with the same sensor (sensor on XOR +AND) it's essentially a NOT gate on the button press. Hope that's interesting for you!
