When you are doing a time only DIY clock project there is only two measurements that need to take place in order to select the correct clock parts.
One is a measurement of the minute hand and the second one is the
measurement of the overall shaft length. So let's take a look.
Alright I got to figure out the length I'll need for my minute hand. I will go from the center of the clock dial where the clock motor mounting hole would be and out to where the hour indicators will be located.
If my minute hand is under five inches I can use a standard American Made mini quartz motor. If it's over five inches I'll use a high torque.

To determine what hand motor I need to have two measurements. I need to know the overall length of the hand shaft and the length of the threaded part of the shaft.
The overall length is only important if I have have to provide clearance for a lens cover. The threaded part of the shaft is important because it must stick through the dial material with about 1/8" length sticking through. This allows for enough room to put the brass washer and hut on the threaded shaft to secure the clock motor to the dial.
