We are looking to get goats soon on our Off-Grid Tennessee homestead, but before getting them, we have a few projects to tackle. First up is a goat shelter. We designed our shelter out of free pallets to save a little cash! Join us as we put it together!

That’s awesome! As someone who’s seen goats all jump on the same surface at the same time, I’d suggest putting a few blocks btwn the roof and the front and back walls to give it additional strength. Also, since the goats will inevitably jump up onto the roof at some point, find a way to bend the edges of the roof tin to avoid potentially severe cuts should they hit the edge. And finally, get some cheap paint, mix it with sand and put it on that tin, so the have some grit to keep them from slipping and sliding on dewey/wet tin and, again, possibly getting injured. You’ll save on avoidable vet bills with just these few things. I can hardly wait to meet your new family members. 😁

If you have never been around goats let me offer a word of advice. That wall is low enough that you will have goats on top of the shed the first day so make sure the roof will support their weight.

Missing two things on your great shelter. Goats hate wind and getting wet. They like to lay against walls. If you use another pallet and add a board between all the cracks that will solve the problem of wind and rain getting in on windy days. Also they like to rub, so adding a rebar or post at the corners where they will push will solve that problem. I have 7 nigerian dwarf goats that follow me everywhere. They are like puppies. You are gonna have so much fun. Homefree Alaska channel built a great milk stantion for their sheep. And K&S Get Out channel have goats and built pallet shelter and playground you might like. Looking forward to seeing your new family members.

I’m new to you guys channel and it’s totally awesome to find someone in the mountains in TN because i bought some land about 2 years ago in the mountains in TN and I have just sold my house in Nashville and now I’m living the “debt free” life but I am on the grid and have water which at the time I started my journey I thought with 3 kids that was my best choice because moving from the city life to the mountain life with the kids this was my best option. I working on more solar power and water catchment. I’m about 25 minutes west of Falls Creek Falls I really glad I found you guys 👍

From a guy who has done it, if you don't drink a lot of milk you may find that having milk goats is a LOT of work for very little gain. They do have other benefits including what you pointed out (brush control), but that usually takes a herd. They are lots of fun, but very hard on fences. Chickens are the only livestock I have found that are close to being a good investment at small farm sizes. Maybe you could just trade for milk with your friend that has the milk goats? Have you thought about a geodesic dome for your main home? It seems like a very inexpensive way to build, and totally doable by someone that is a little bit handy. Great job, guys!

Great idea for a goat shelter. A word of advice, add a gutter to it and run it off into a watering trough to help with keeping the goats watered. One less chore that you will have to do in the long run.

Gotta add water catchment for goats... Always catch every drop of rainfall. Just a trash collecter then into a "half barrel" trough. 2 cheap lengths of rain gutter. One at top to trim out top edges, second at bottom to direct rain into 5gal trash catcher bucket...then overflow into trough

To slant your roof cut one of those pallets. Where the board is that goes down the middle, cut the boards off on one side and make it the 2 foot section of the palette. What the center board and the outside board? And then set that on top. And then when you run your boards from there down to the backside, you'll have A. Big enough slant, that you can put your medal on top, and then you'll be plenty of slant for the rain. Arsnow

When I built my goat shelter I did basically the same thing using pallets but I went a step further and cut down the left over wood and sealed it completely up on 3 sides, Here in East Texas we get alot of cold driving rain and it often rains sideways so I wanted to it sealed up to keep them dry and warmish.

Might consider moving your valuable hauling equipment “pick up truck“ closer to where you want to unload rather than walking back-and-forth back-and-forth back-and-forth, same thing with the pallets load them on the pick up move them to the location and offload save yourself a lot of time and energy for all the things that you need to do, enjoy the channel, keep on keeping on

I spent part of my childhood on an established farm in the Ozarks. W had dairy cows, stock cattle, pigs, and chickens (no goats, though). I ;love watching y'all do what the early members of my family must have done in the beginning. I am especially enjoying your hens. You need a banty rooster, though, just because they are so cute. Also, you haven't said one word (unless I missed it) about snakes. King snakes are good because they kill the problem snakes, but they will also steal eggs. In the Ozarks we really have to watch out for copperheads. Are you having any such problems? I absolutely love your videos. Thank you for sharing.

good day Matt and Cass ...... at timestamp 13:08 you are talking about snow but the thing you are not aware of yet is the fact that Goats love to climb up onto everything they can so if your goats can get up on the roof they will so you may need to rethink the 2x4 on the flat

I hope you buy or make some concrete anchors to hold that sail plane down during the Tennessee thunder storm winds. I live west of you, but have lost one utility building which was anchored, but ripped apart. For winter you could staple clear plastic rolls or sheets of plastic used when painting. It would provide light but wind protection...

Sometimes at tractor supply. They have those little bitty trackers with back h*** and stuff on them for sale. And I think we paid interest on stuff like that it. I think it was 399% interest. I mean, we paid it off and it was up 5 year note and we paid it off in 2 years. But anyway, think about it, that's where you get a tractor

Best shelters ive ever used are IBC totes with a hole cut in them. The reason is they are so easy to move. We thought we wanted a permanent spot but that didn't happen. We always wanted them to clean up a new location. Looking good guys.

@RunawayMattCass good idea to always start farm sheds on 4x4 skids...easier than adding later. The tote idea can contain a 25ft chain so you could move a goat around to different spots as a "brush cutter"

So what you're saying is chickens are a lot like high school girls?😅 Goats are super social, and they will probably hang out with you too. 10:03 I feel so objectified. 18:37 Matt is definitely the GOAT. You probably could have made the roof 2x4s vertical, and toe-screwed them in. Good job though.

Hi guys saw some of your videos. Your problem can be solved easy as pie. It'll sound plumb crazy, but it will work. I just need you to answer a few questions. Do you have a lake or water or river or anything like that near you???? If you do . Your problems will be over. Trust me on this I've seen it done. Got to outsmart the ass-wipes of public service. They screwed a guy over we know and he and some others and us who have a strong dislike of Building inspectors and code enforcement. Turned the table on them. Let me know.
