Building a plastic brick structure!

In this video we build a plastic brick structure kit from DPM. We use a lot of product from Ammo by Mig to achieve a heavily weathered look.

I paint the other side to minimize the warping. Then when the underside is almost dry, I place it against some wax paper and weight it down overnight or longer. The result is a dead flat foundation, wall or whatever. Beautiful work you two!!!

The bevel on the edges is called a draft angle. That draft provides a reliable release from the injection machine.

Another great job Jason. One small criticism though. The boards across the inside of the windows all look the same. Same size, same spacing, same color. I don't think that is plausible.

I'm very curious to see the trains which are running on Jason's layout. You reference it being of a modern day setting. So, is he running BNSF, et. al., or something else? To me it seems more like a dystopian future ala "Mad Max". Just curious how the fantasy plays out. Great diorama by the way!

What a great collaboration. I waited to watch this until I had the time to sit in front of my TV. That way I catch everything. Speaking of which. Did you lose the footage of you spraying the window frames using the stencils you made. I mean, I was able to fill in the gaps. But I would have liked to see the process. Jason, it appears these pieces are produced like the Ameri-Towne kits I’ve built previously ? There made using styrene injection molds and and there’s a couple of really important things you need to do prior to assembling. As you stated it’s important to sand the connecting ends to be sure there flat as there smooth and so,e what glossy out of the mold. Then I wash all pieces mine warm dishwater to remove the release agent that’s used in the molds when there being made as this will effect how the adhesive and paint adheres as you go. And I recommend Plastruct plastic weld adhesive as it chemically welds the pieces together ! I learned this the hard way on my first kit having issues with paint and adhesive grabbing properly ? Just my experience if in fact these are made from styrene !

Do you have a list of acrylic paint colors that you'd recommend? It would REALLY helpful to know your top ten, then the next ten, then the next ten, etc. colors that you use for your railroad layout. I don't know which colors to get first. And, do you buy them individually, or in a prepackaged group? I NEED HELP knowing what to buy and not wasting my money! I can envision this being a video. Then you can do one on your weathering chalk colors. Etc. THANK YOU!

Hey Mark, happy to answer any questions! The track is at 41 inches off the ground. I have 4 stools to sit on which are 32 inches tall or you can just stand.

Any art supply store has it, similar names (other than "matte board") are "chipboard" and I've seen it called "MDF", which it really isn't. A sharp/new X-acto knife blade, or a new single edge razor blade works too. I use the "snap knives" from Olfa, or off brand most of the time as the blades are dirt cheap and you're a "snap" away from a fresh/new cutting edge.

Hey Jason, after about 200 dpm builds, I can tell you that the roof support is supposed to be cut into about 1” lengths and spread out evenly along the roof line. That’s why they only send one little piece in those smaller kits😁

I've only built a few DPM kits over the years, mostly for my oldest son's HO std. gauge layout (I model narrow gauge). One thing that improves the appearance of DPM kits dramatically... I take small files to the sashes of the windows and thin them down to about half their width. It's a lot of work on some of the structures (that have more windows), but the effect is worth it, at least to me! Another alternative, which I did on one of them, was to remove the windows completely and substitute window castings from Tichy... Another big improvement, as I changed it from a single sash window, to a 4/4, totally altering the appearance of the structure.
