Really good job. Neat to watch your progress. Of course you're going to grow something on the fencing! 8-) So cute to see the little chicks walking over to the open door for the first time! Go Matilda! They love that clover, great idea. A lot of construction has happened for their benefit. Those are some lucky chicks! Hello Princess Leah, you are such a pretty girl!!

It's funny how you say that I don't know a real winter, and you say it's hot there but I bet it's nothing like our summer heat :) Yay Matilda.... Tough little Aussie Chick, not running inside.. I got CORN ta eat :) LOL - funny how they abolished the corn for the REAL WORLD.. Great to see them in their new 'extension'.. Happy days ahead.. Interesting to see how long that grass lasts.. with mine it would be about a day and a half I reckon.. Man they eat!!

Mary Clendenin Very reasonable questions. It depends on the width of your fencing I use 48 inch wide fencing and space the 2 X 4's 2 feet apart so the fencing is supported on both sides and in the middle.

Thank you. I put a heavy gage wire poultry fencing and then the small one inch poultry netting on top of that for the bottom couple of feet and I used hardware cloth over to of the windows. It has been a year and a half and I haven't had a problem so far.

Great job.I am not sure what area you are in or if you have predators in the area. You may want to consider wrapping the enclosure with hardware cloth and not poultry wire. Weasels and fox can both pull chickens through poultry wire.You would think that the holes are too small, but they aren't.I can't explain my shock when I came home to find two chickens missing and another half eaten and stuck in a hole in the chicken wire. Hardware cloth has holes that approx 1/2 inch square and works great.

Hey, Dale, you might want to think about a roll of chicken wire from the the ground up three feet. The hens will rub thier necks raw reaching through that fencing to eat grass on outside once it's all gone in the run. Just a suggestion. Great video.

@DaleCalderCampobello 9 жыл бұрын
joe okie Thank you. This video is four years old. I did add one inch chicken wire around the bottom not for the reason you mentioned, although that is a good idea. One of the hens went broody and hatched a clutch of chicks and they were getting away from her because they could run right through the larger fence holes.

@Watsamadoing You are so right a heat wave here is 30 degrees for a couple of days and the heat that I was complaining about in the video was in the low 20's LOL. What I should have said is the humidity gets to me after all of the wet weather when the sun does come out it is very humid. They have only been out in the yard for a couple of days and it looks like it has been mowed already. My electric poultry netting and solar charger arrived today so soon they will have a larger area to explore.

Not so long back I was watching a program on the idiot box (TV) on keeping chickens, and they were saying that we should all be using bird wire instead of chicken wire as it keeps out snakes, lizards and whatever other predators that you may have in your area. It sounds like a smart ~ if not more expensive ~ idea to me. It might be worth thinking about with future projects.
@DaleCalderCampobello
@DaleCalderCampobello 10 жыл бұрын
Snakes and lizards aren't an issue here fortunately. I'm not sure what bird wire is. I use a heavy gage steel wire fencing 2X3 inch opening I add a band of 1 inch chicken wire around the bottom just because young chicks can walk through the 2X3 inch opening. The only predator here that can get through this fencing would be a weasel and they are nocturnal and the coop is closed up at night. Thanks for the information.
@lesboucher542

Sorry Dale, I should have explained "Bird Wire". Put it down to an Aussie thing. It is the wire that it used in aviaries when you keep small birds ~ finches, budgerigars etc. Unfortunately, Here in, Australia, we do have a problem with snakes, lizards and fox's so, keeping them out can be a problem. Another animal that we have a problem with is ferrel cats. People seem to think that it is ok to just dump a cat (or kittens) on the road side as they will fend for themselves. Unfortunately they go wild and kill of the native wild life and will even kill chickens if allowed to get close enough.

On the issue of the the new walls attaching to the hen house. Theres many ways to frame up to and over the piers, you could have raised the bottom of the new wall to the height of the coop by placing the sill plate on top of a 4x4 that has the angle of the pier cut into the end, butt the 4x4 next the pier and secure wall to coop. Don't forget to protect against digging predators.

mauldindoc123 Thank you. Not really, this has been a very satisfactory coop. My flock has reached it's full capacity for this size coop and I plan to hatch Chantecler eggs this spring so I will be building a slightly smaller coop for the new flock, not identical to this coop but along the same lines. Good luck with your construction project.

My 25 Black Sex-Link hens love their 20' by 40' house with 30 nest off ground so no need to bent down to collect eggs when eggs roll out nest to my egg catcher behind nest, hens enter front I pick up egg in back off nest. Eggs rolling in carpet padding, eggs layed on back side of carpet in floor of nest. Hen house has 2 walls covered with tin and 2 walls covered with 6' chicken wire. Hens can go to outside 10' x 40' pen by crossing an overhead tunnel walkway. Pen is totally covered with 6' chicken wire and rabbits have company then.

Dale, thank you for this video. I am new to both chicken keeping AND building, and want to make a secure chicken yard about 8 feet by 8 feet. Here in the city I can only keep 6 chickens. One thing you didn't really say in the video that I was curious about...your 2X4's...are they screwed together or nailed together when you framed the walls? I'm picturing doing something similar although I think I want to make one wall taller and have a slanted roof for shade (I live in the southern US!). Like I said, I'm new to building so I need it to be as simple as possible. I'll be using 1/2 inch hardware cloth here because of snakes and other predators. Just wondering if you nailed or screwed the pieces together. Thanks for any info you can provide! There are tons of videos of people building coops but not so many about pens, so thank you!
@DaleCalderCampobello

+Sandy Merritt Thank you Sandy. Back when I built this I likely used nails but I have a DeWalt Impact Wrench now so if I were doing it again I would use screws, my favourite are the Outdoor Wood Screws with the six pointed star drive they come in various sizes in pound boxes and each box has a free bit, but either would work just fine. Fortunately we don't have a snake problem my biggest problem is hawks.

Hopefully you don't have weasels. I used the same wire on my run to protect the hens from fisher cat, fox and coyote and it was fine for 3 years. Then a weasel moved into the area and killed all 10 hens. Fisher cat will chew through chicken wire so that is why I used the welded wire. Unfortunately, the weasel was able to climb right through the 3" wire. I wrapped the entire run in chicken wire over the welded wire so hopefully that will keep all predators out. 8 new hens are depending on it.

We do have weasels but fortunately no problems yet and the coop is 5 years old now. Weasels are nocturnal and never seem to attack in the day time. I made the coop very strong and I always close it up tight before dark. Years ago with a coop that wasn't as tight as this one I had issues with weasels and raccoons. So far no problems this time. Hope you have good luck this time.
