Building the Airfix 1:76 scale Sd.Kfz.234 kit - a German armoured car, used mainly in the North African campaign in World War Two as a reconnaissance vehicle and self-propelled gun.
It was a decent kit, not much bad to say about it really.
Watch out for my timelapse build of the diorama, coming soon!

What were Airfix thinking no 234 served in the Africa campaign. SdKfz 222, SdKfz 231 6rad, SdKfz 233 8rad, SdKfz 231 8rad were the only multi wheeled armour cars in N.Africa. The Sd.Kfz.4/4 with the Pak 40 never came till late 1944.

This is (or was) a famous Airfix screw up. Based on the same chassis as the Puma they got the mudguards wrong. I hope they get it right if they do release a new tooled version. And yeah! This version of the 234 came out in late '44 so definitely didn't see the desert

I just recently built this kit myself. I cannot agree with you - it was one of the worst kits I ever built. I knew that before I built it, because of that the kit was lying around in my basement for almost 20 years. Not only that the parts do not fit well together... the worst thing is that this kit just ROUGHLY resembles the Sd.Kfz. 234/4. If anyone is interested in a really good kit of the 234-series I highly recommend the Hasegawa kits. They "only" have the 234/1, 234/2 and 234/3 as far as I know, so that specific version seen in this Video here is missing but anyways: The Hasegawa Kits are MUCH higher detailed, everything fits well without any sanding and most important - the models are accurate to the real vehicles. Nice Video anyways ;)

A great video but be please aware that this is the worst howler in the whole Airfix range. It is the wrong chassis! The vehicle is supposed to be the 234 series: www.achtungpanzer.com/images/sdkfz234_4_2.jpg but as you can see from the above photo the mudguards are all different. The chassis is actually the 8 rad 231 or 232: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwerer_Panzerspähwagen#/media/File:SdKfz_232.jpg None of these ever appear to have been up-gunned to the medium 75mm gun. Quite how Airfix ever came to make this mistake and get the wrong mount on the wrong vehicle I do not know.It has been pointed out to the company many times and was the subject of conversions and corrections in the old AIrfix Magazine. The 232 chassis is fine, just the wrong gun :(

The unfortunate thing about this model being the real vehicle does not have the mudguards like this at all. Airfix stuffed up. the wheel covers should be one continuous piece like the Matchbox/Revell 234/2 Puma.

When you were attaching the mudguards to the model and said that you wrongly applied them at an angle, I remembered an article I read and a conversion I carried some forty odd years ago to this very kit. The mudguards were one whole unit and followed the contours of the sharp change of angle in the hull structure. If I could find my model, I would show you what it looked like. The separate mudguards appeared on later marks of this vehicle.

Mason Scoggins Good question, painting the parts before hand is good because then you don't miss anything and they are held firmly in place by the sprue. I usually do this for small parts and parts for interiors like cockpits. Painting the exterior after the kit has been assembled is generally done to make sure it all look the same and camouflage patterns line up etc.. It also makes weathering easier. But overall I'd just do whatever's easiest and gets the best results for you :)

Hey Owen cool build as always :D which filler did you used you just wrote down 'Filler' (I have massive problens with the revell one and i'm looking for an alternative). This model is fron the sale of the Airfix webside right? I thought of buying it but for the price of the shipping I could buy 6 of them and for free shipping you must spend about 100£. I hope you know what I want to say ( my bad english)
@quickkits
@quickkits 9 жыл бұрын
The filler I used was "Ronseal smooth finish filler" - nothing special really but it does the job quite well. What problems are you having with the Revell stuff? And yeah it was from the Airfix sale, and I know their shipping is expensive. Maybe try searching eBay and see if you can find one with a cheaper shipping price?
@aircraft9992
@aircraft9992 9 жыл бұрын
I never heared about that I guess it's not available here too but I will look for it. The problem with Revells filler is that you need to press a lot of it out of the tube and then mix it because this what actually gets out of there is clear and you can't use it. I think there will be a video about this problem

I've just gotten into model building and would really appreciate some advice. Should I wait until after i glue parts together to paint them, or paint before I glue? I've been painting before I glue them together, and then scraping off paint from contact points, but it seems like no matter how much I scrape off the paint messes up the glue and makes it where it doesn't join the two pieces together. Any help would be appreciated.
@quickkits
@quickkits 7 жыл бұрын
You only need to paint parts that either won't be accessible once the model is assembled, or parts that are very small (eg. 1/72 scale figures) before assembly. The rest can be painted after. I hope that helps

I would have to agree. If you find yourself doing 1/35 then you should definitely paint the exterior once you have built the actual model. I suppose it would be the same for 1/72. Another thing is that it might be an idea to put the tools on after painting the kit itself. You shouldn’t find that the tools are separate on 1/72 if it’s from something like airfix but high quality kit manufactures like tamiya or revell will quite likely have them as separate parts.

I just started making model kits because my gramp gave me his very old ones. They are great and all but i can not peel off the stickers they are just so brittle

Are you trying to peel the decals (stickers) off the sheet without holding them in water first? Or are they just so old that they're disintegrating? That happened on my PZL P11c

You amazing at this but I have a question. Do you take a break well doing this or do you do it in one go.😄

Haha naaah I'd have to be a super human to do it in one go :') I usually do all my videos over the course of several days

Oh and if your ok with it could I make a suggestion for a kit. I was wondering if you could make a DH vampire T.11. I made one when I was like 8 but it was Evan before I liked model kits. The only reason I got it is because it was in New Zealand livery. Sorry if that comment was to long. :)

Your videos have gotten me back into scale modelling, I'm quite scared of the Paint part, since I dont know If I should pickup an Airbrush or If I should brush Paint it.
@quickkits
@quickkits 8 жыл бұрын
You could try brush painting first seems as it's cheaper, then buy and airbrush if you're sure you really need one :)

Quick Kits then theres also the part where, I dont know what colors that work with which kits example, I bought the Tamiya 1:35 T-62, and I dont know If I should buy set Paints or If I should buy Paints that i can mix.
@quickkits
@quickkits 8 жыл бұрын
I always buy the base colour(s) of the kit so I know the main colour is accurate (though you have to remember that with old vehicals no one is quite sure of the exact shade), and then I'll mix colours for any smaller details. I find it useful to have the primary colours and black and white. Paint sets are a good idea. If you are brush painting, don't buy Tamiya acrylics as they are designed for airbrushes

+Quick Kits thanks for the info, I owned some Tamiya colors earlier and I'm aware they dont work well with brush, I picked up my Tamiya 1-35 scale T-64 today, its an old model from 74 I think, going to use it as a training kit.
