A time-lapse build of Airfix's 1/76 scale T34, the most widely used Russian tank in the Second World War.
More challenging than I thought it would be, but then it was an old mould. I enjoyed it though!

Reminds me when I built an Airfix Panzer III many, many years ago. I decided to make a little cardboard surrounding diorama that tried to show the Western Desert - I remember getting really small twigs to put on the tank, and then made up a couple of trees in the background, along with some rocks and sand. I never got around to doing any further dioramas!

for the tracks, i would recommend using instant glue or super glue to attach the tracks to the wheel it may give better look

If you're mad about it fitting poorly, look at a real T-34...

At the beginning of barbarossa the t-34 of wich 1000 had been deployed still had quality but seen as the germans were defeating them ussr got aid from uk and America the lend-lease after ussr had fuel money steel to make better equipment they made the t-34 at mass at that point quality over quantity had become quantity over quality and they produced t 34 crudely armour plates hardly fitted together their were gaps in the tank but it was good enough since after one battle they would be knocked out anyway, sometimes they lasted 2-3 battles but that was sometimes after the crews tank would be destroyed they could just get another one since they made 48.000 t-34/85 and almost 30.000 model 1940'1'2'3

+Andy Wilderness Russian tanks were literally being cranked out as fast as possible in makeshift tractor factories, I doubt the tank commanders would waste time cleaning tanks when Russia was on it's knees.

Interesting method on the chipping. Certainly less of a bother than what I did on the Panzer II I just finished. I spray painted the model in flat black. Once that dried, I cut off a piece of kitchen sponge, and used it to dab masking fluid wherever I wanted chipping. After painting over the model, I peeled off the masking fluid, and voila! a very nice chipped look.

I think your welding detail was a lot better than you described in the video. It was to scale and quite realistic. I really love that you are making all of the old kits that I grew up with and the realism that you achieve has inspired me to get back into making kits. Thanks very much for the videos, I really enjoy your format and the way you have linked to other videos that provide more details on the special techniques such as the chalk washes. Keep up the good work! All the best from Oz.

Rubber tracks are best superglued on - you can show the droop at the top, plus copious superglue makes them more rigid, you're paint finish is less likely to flake off. This model of the T 34 with its choice of turrets I found inspirational as a boy in the early 1970s, I thought it was a great wargaming peice (along with Airfixs then set of Russian infantry with HMGs on a trailer, and heavy mortars. You could convert the tank into an SU 100

+Zammpie Old molds, I reckon. We were still fighting the Vietnam War when those molds cranked out their first T-34 kits. But then again, the Tamiya Panzer II I just finished came from molds from the early 70s, and it fit together very well, really only broke out the contour putty for the Commander and the soldiers.

it's not 1/72nd btw. Airfix stuck to the 00 railway scale of 1/76. It's noticably smaller if one's collection is otherwise 1/72. I remember building this kit back in the 1960s.... It hasn't changed a bit, exceot for the decals. Those Airfix tracks always were a problem, and I recognise the fuel tank issues. That's how kits were then! You'd think Airfix would have sorted their AFV models in 50+ years!

I love your videos. Very quick and informative. And, you use Humbrol!!! is great. I paint only with Humbrol Enamel, and I have a problem with the washes. I saw all using acrylic, so washes are easy, but with Humbrol, if we put a wash usig for example black paint and thinner, we ruin the base paint!. So, what can I do?. I saw people putting satin varnish but I think thinner will ruin it too.
@quickkits
@quickkits 7 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend you use a chalk wash (I have a video on it) rather than a paint wash, or buy some proper weathering products. Chalks and weathering materials won't corrode your base coats

Great job on the T34, it's a shame about those tracks, but you can only build what is in the kit. Apart from the tracks and the turret gaps this looks like a good kit. Perhaps there is a better mould available now from Airfix to resolve these issues??

i got a few questions to ask, what can be used to apply filler, what is the purpose of pre-shading, was the paint you used for pre shading thinned 50/50, what brush size did you use for painting the main colour of the tank? and that's a great t 34
@quickkits
@quickkits 8 жыл бұрын
Filler can be applied using anything; a piece of cardboard, a flat-head screwdriver etc. Pre-shading discolours the paint you cover it with, so it can be used to get a stressed weathering effect. I'm using it to futher darken dark areas of the kit in this video. I always thin my paint, so yes, but I've found that actually the 50:50 ratio can be too thin sometimes. The brush I used was just one of the standard Humbrol ones, about 5mm.

Another great one. Do you ever use primer? Instead of the matchstick, Paperclip and play doh could you super glue them?

I'd recommend assembling the whole tank (but without the tracks on) for painting, but don't glue the upper and lower hull together. Then when you've done all the painting you can separate the upper and lower pieces and easily put on the tracks. Might not work for every model tank

There is some distortion in the video, very noticeable near the end. Is the lens of the camera very narrow? It seems like there is no perspective!

Hey Owen! Great job as always. Also do you have to paint the parts on the spool or when it's done?

Model looked better before chalk wash, washing ruined it for me :( I think dry chalk pastels in some smart areas would be better :)
@quickkits
@quickkits 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, perhaps this model didn't need the wash as there wasn't any recessed detail, and dry chalks would have created a better dusty effect... I'll try your suggestion on the Sherman I'm building :)

I don't know if you already know this, but there is a free game called War Thunder that has awesome models of the vehicles. On top of being a fun ww2 game, you could use the models as a reference if you wanted. Anyway great videos and keep up the good work!

I am aware of the game but I've never found time to download it (my internet connection is REALLY bad) and I never really have time to play games anyway. However, that is a very good tip and other people should listen to it. Thank you for your comment :)

+Quick Kits It's a good game although the developers have a problem with making Russian vehicles perform way better than they did in real life, and censoring reviews online.

Is this a good kit for me and my nine year old boy to start please as beginners ? I got him a 1:48 supermarine spitfire but it looks a bit daunting but we do have all the paints for it ? Any help would be gratefully appreciated..thanks
@quickkits
@quickkits 4 жыл бұрын
Probably not this kit, but something similar is the Airfix 1/76 Cromwell Starter Set (I've made a video on it 😉). At that age I started out making 1/72 scale and 1/76 scale kits - they can be fiddly, but there are less parts and they're cheaper to learn with
