This is a great idea. And it's not far from how the original ILM guys worked on SW. If you watch the "Making Of" specials, they were always raiding surplus stores, junk yards, and random places for real items that were re-purposed, to give their galaxy that realistic "lived-in" look. Personally, I think this approach is much better than ultra-clean 3D printed objects and the like. Well done, sir!
@TheSmugglersRoom5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You are exactly correct. That method ILM created was the biggest reason I was drawn to the original films. I’ve always loved the stories but that used universe look and texture just captivated me. Thanks for watching!

Those electrical boxes are perfect for a project like this, I love wandering Home Depot and when they ask what you're working on.. lol Also I have to add, a new Smugglers Room video and a new Punished Props video in the same day both using water mixable oils.. guess I know what I'm buying for my shop next.

I LOVE it when the Home Depot or Lowes employee's ask what I am looking for. The best was when we built our Moisture Vaporator Margarita Machine. By the time i was done explaining to the first employee there were four or five people standing around trying to wrap their heads around what we were building. It was awesome! And yes, Bill Doran's suggestion of the oil paints was a huge hit! They work incredibly well. Thank the prop gods for that guy, i never stop learning from him! Thanks for watching!

Hey Bryan. Fantastic channel huge starwars fan and now huge Smugglers Room fan. What software are you using for your 3D renders? I love the detail and while I am a big 3D print geek and up and coming Fusion 360 user, I can't imagine getting the detail of your renders without a ton of work at this point. Thanks for doing what you do.
@TheSmugglersRoom3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! For the room renders I actually used SketchUp with a 3rd party plugin for the final rendering. It was awesome. However that was a few years back, and now I’ve shifted to using Fusion 360 like you mentioned. I think there is a lot that can be down with fusion and maybe a combination of blender? But I have yet to learn blender .
@ArmouryTerrain5 жыл бұрын
While it is a well executed build and looks good, I would not be able to build such a thing without having a narrative in my head about what it is and why it is in that place. To me this is the difference between a piece looking ok and a piece that logically exists. - not really sure that many other designers have this sort of mindset.
@TheSmugglersRoom5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Armoury-Terrain, I 100% agree with you. I really do want to have a name and function to all the strange things in this room. I think it would be much more entertaining for visitors . . . or they will just think I am crazier than they thought. I am good with either! Thanks for watching!!!

Kitbashing originated with Gerry Anderson productions and 2001: A Space Odyssey. But some of those guys (Colin Cantwell & Brian Johnson) also worked on Star Wars so ... close ;)

I actually made all of that sketch up model myself. Unless you are talking about the small falcon model displayed? If so, then I got it from the 3D warehouse within sketchup.
