Very Nice Job! The only thing that I would like to add is, What you're calling a "cushion" is actually called a restrictor. It might cushion the action of the door, but it actually restricts the airflow from the cylinder to slow the action of the cylinder piston. I worked on pneumatic controls "back in the day" and worked on pneumatic control valves for water isolation as large as 20".
@WhiteysWickedWorkshop
@WhiteysWickedWorkshop 9 ай бұрын
Thanks Don and thanks for watching! The website is calling it a cushion but yes it does restrict the air. Could they be calling it a cushion because a restrictor is more like an orifice that might not be adjustable? I'm an Electrician by trade so this is NOT the back of the hand for me :)

Good video and nice build. Using pneumatic cylinders and valves to move the door is a pretty good solution. One of the downsides is that you need a compressor. But its not that complicated to build. I would add beam sensors that prevent the door from closing if someone stands in it.
@WhiteysWickedWorkshop
@WhiteysWickedWorkshop 11 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes if I were to do it again I would use a smaller and quieter compressor but I had the compressor for my workshop so it was a no brainer. As mentioned in the video I use smart switches to control the door, so far I have not had any safety issues but I would definitely add something extra if I were to go public. Thanks for watching!

Super neat build! I think I am going to build one that uses the manual soft close type doors. My new house design will have each bed room with an exposed 12 foot opening to which I can build a full length working Star Wars door facade. Which will be able to put in the 4 foot door along with lights and anything else that will seamless go in to it. I think I will also add in some shelves on both sides along with a micro switch that will activate the door opening/closing sound as well. With the ability to turn off and adjust the volume with the control panel and lighting.

I have never used Pneumatics before on a project. Are there small and quiet compressors for a build like this? I couldn't imagine a pancake compressor firing up randomly throughout the day to keep the pressure up.
@WhiteysWickedWorkshop
@WhiteysWickedWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
I have heard of people putting pancake compressors inside small refrigerators or insulated boxes. I have also seen Quiet compressors at LOWES for purchase (not sure how quiet they are). Mine is a full size and loud...but doesn't run often. The bigger the tank the less it needs to run. But...all pneumatics leak somewhat no matter what you do.

This would be awesome 10 years ago. Now it's just, OK. Basically anyone can do this now. BTW You don't need two cylinders. Using a belt drive from a garage door would have made it way easier, takes up less room and less costly. Use a decent motor and it cost a lot less and no need to use air.

Cool build, I'm looking to do something similar. Are you leaving the compressor on 24/7? Do you have to purge the air to prevent condensation in the tank? I want to use a smaller compressor but I'm worried about the longevity of leaving the compressor on.
@WhiteysWickedWorkshop
@WhiteysWickedWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for watching! I do leave the compressor on 24/7 and it hardly ever runs because its a large tank. Condensation will always collect in a tank but its your job to drain the water while performing maintenance. It doesn't have to be strict, just drain it when you think about it. If I were to do it all over again I would get a very quit tank and build a box to put it into so you couldnt hear it at all. Cheers and good luck with your build!
