Hi. Star Trek nerd here. In the first two Star Trek movies, you see the Enterprise being refit in the orbital spacedock. They hold the shot for like two hours, in which time you see crews welding and attaching components to the exterior of the ship.

As a Star Trek nerd; the answer to your question around the 1:15 timeframe: the lower section with the shuttlebay, made of of the mk 3 fuselage parts is known as the secondary hull/engineering hull; since that's where main engineering is located/where the warp drive connects to the nacelles via the pylons. The saucer section is also known as the primary hull; since that's primarily where the crew quarters are located. [Insert "The more you know" screen and sound effect]
@TheHutchy017 ай бұрын
It was also according to the novels at least, built in space, unlike the saucer which was built outside San Francisco.

🌠🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌🌌 The More You Know
@HoofmanJones030397 Жыл бұрын
So, fun fact, the big engine nacelles on the pylons only propel the ship during warp flight. There's another set of engines on the back saucer (on the original TOS model) that propel the ship at sublight speeds called the impulse drive. The lore says it is a newtonian drive that does obey the laws of physics, which would explain (scientifically) why the warp nacelles would be mounted above the saucer. So you could mount the nacelles higher and still have the craft relatively light without extra weight.
@BlokeOnAMotorbike Жыл бұрын
I figured the impulse engines being literally reaction mass drivers, powered by fusion reactors, would require them to fire through the centre of mass - hence them being mounted at the back of the saucer and the nacelles being higher than the saucer section to counterbalance the mass of the secondary hull. It wouldn't matter too much where the nacelles are as long as the warp bubble they create completely envelopes the ship (see also: Miranda class, NX class, Defiant class, Windrunner class, Intrepid class, or the runabouts, where all those ships either have blended secondary hulls or are flatter overall so don't need huge pylons for the nacelles)
@BrannonAerospace Жыл бұрын
According to Voyager, they are fancy ion engines. Weird discrepancy, but it’s not very surprising seeing as it’s Star Trek we’re talking about.
@LeakyTrees11 ай бұрын
Correction, they don’t propel the ship at all. Warp is called such because the way the ship travels in warp is by moving space from in front of the ship to behind it, so the ship isn’t actually propelled, it’s stationary and spacetime warps around it.
@CalyPzol11 ай бұрын
@@LeakyTreesThey keep talking about how when they go into warp, they have a "Warp Bubble" as they said is Discovery S01. And the movie "Star Trek: Beyond",Kelvin timeline, the Enterprise kinda slicing through space like its water.

As a huge Star Trek fan, everything here is ok. I will point out for future reference that the propulsion of the enterprise is not in the nacelles. Those create warp by bending space, but they don’t actually produce thrust. If you ever seen a red glowing element on the back of a saucer section, that is the propulsion. In universe, it’s just a really advanced RAIR (Ram Augmented Interstellar Rocket) engine. I’m not pointing this out to be annoying, because I actually really like the video. I’m more trying to be informative. I also am posting this because I feel like having the engine on the saucer and the nacelles above that and the engineering hull bellow that would balance the design without moving the nacelles. Great video!

Now that you have the Enterprise, building the Defiant sounds like a fun little challenge. It's smaller size will require some attention to detail in order to get it looking right, and mounting the engines correctly will certainly be a chore, but you should find this vessel much easier to mount on a boost stage for orbit. As a secondary option, building one of the Runabout shuttles would be a nice challenge. Bonus is that with some clever wing placement, it should be capable of atmospheric flight, perhaps using a mixture of jet and rocket engines for this purpose.

Some of the ships in TNG and VOY were build on the ground, at least partially. The Utopia Planitia shipyards on Mars were known to build significant parts of ships on the ground, possibly even entire ships. Also, USS Voyager could land and take off and was seen to do so on several episodes. It's just that Star Trek hand waves away alot of the physics with their impulse and warp engines, deflector dishes, structural integrity fields, and inertial dampers.

Quick bit of Starship Anatomy for you. The saucer section is the Primary Hull, the bottom section is the Engineering section, or Secondary Hull. The cigars on the end of the pylons are the Warp Nacelles. And the normal navigation, or Impulse Engines, are normally on the back of the Primary hull. Of course this is only with Federation ships. Then again, a B'rel could make a great SSTO. It's the ship class from Star Trek IV, and was extensively used in the TNG era series. Especially in the form of the IKS Rottaran. Star Trek Ground/Space Construction: In the "Main" Universe, ships are not built to experience or launch from planetary gravity. Even though they do it a few times for the plot, it is almost always a "this wasn't built to do this" moment. In the Kepler Universe (JJ Abrams films, which is technically an offshoot of the Main universe), ships are often in planetary gravity, sometimes even under water.
