What Christine said in her video and what you say about the industrial monocultures brought my memory back to an area around here, which story always makes me sad. In West Cork in Ireland, there is, or better was the Gearagh, one of the last diluvial european rainforests. It was probably close to 6000 years old, when it was cut down almost in its entirety to make space for a flooding basin for a dam to produce eletricity for Cork city. There were legends about this as old as humans probably, one was, when the Lee flows backward, the hill beside it will run with tears. When the woods were cut down and the first water was flowing backwards up the Lee, loads of people, who knew the woods, were crying for a day. Just thinking about it makes me cry. And now there's only stumps in a big shallow lake, while a fraction of the Gearagh remains. The irony of it: Now the deforested area is a nature reserve. Trees are part of us and we of them. By destroying these areas, we kill the future not only of us but of future generations.

Saunas are such a wonderful social and architectural concept. Like a rural Irish pub. I've wanted one for years and recently bought a country home with a very nice one. Unfortunately, I can no longer enjoy the experience due to medical reasons.🤬 But films of people building & using rural saunas warm my heart almost like the real thing. Another gorgeous & thoughtful ethnographic vid by Mathias. Thanks!

We have had sustainable logging done on our place, which is native forest. But it is not old growth forest. Our area has been clear fell logged numerous times over the decades. It is very interesting to see how they go about selective and sustainable logging and learn about the guidelines in place. A certain number of large trees must be left within an area, they don’t take the gnarled old ones as there isn’t a market for them, (wild life love the old gnarled trees) trees and rivers need to be avoided and there are amounts they can take of certain species. There are also protected trees they can’t touch. When we look upon the hillsides they logged, you cannot see what they took, though they had to cut a few roads they do minimal numbers of them. Very interesting.

Oh, yes, , dear Mathias, Tova was in the video, you are talking about. But I remember that she went off for a week in the end of the video. IT' s very interesting to see and hear something about building a sauna and about the traditions in Sweden and Finnland. I would like to know, why those traditions, belonging to similar cultural roots, developed in such different ways. Greetings from Germany!

Oh dear... we would never allow ruts like that on our timber sales. 😢 You are correct, there are ways to manage forests that are sustainable and responsible- and they can even include harvesting - but it doesn't just happen. You need to have a strong ecological ethic, have clearly written contracts that require loggers use best management practices on your forest, and you need to hold them to their contract, with stiff penalties for non-compliance. It's up to landowners who care - like you guys - to keep forests healthy.

Good for you on your campaign to preserve your natural diversity. I have to say, I own a tiny house cottage with all solar energy, and I currently lease my land. However, I have been searching for land to buy, but big developers here in the USA have bought up giant swaths of land, and work with the townships which require a very large minimum square footage for new builds! So, I couldn't move my cottage to most places right now...would not meet the minimun city requirements. Big money for builders who like to build and finance McMansions! It's horrible for the environment!

The sound of the steam! Ah! Satisfying! Evocative! I was fortunate enough to have enjoyed so much wonderful sauna time at the friend's house in Tulsa Oklahoma. Little did I know back then how well his father's sauna was constructed. The sauna being located next to the pool made for some great transitions in the summer, and in the cooler parts of the year. Those childhood sauna memories with friends and family remain some of the best. They also set my personal standard for how a sauna experience must be. For those occasions when I spent time in other saunas. Most of those times in the United States, those sauna experiences were not as wonderful. But some sauna is always better than no sauna.

In relation to the destruction of forests, have you read Finding the Mother Tree by Suzanne Simard? In it she describes her fight to prove to the Canadian Forestry industry that the health of all the trees in a forest are interdependent on each other and on the biodiversity and health of the fungi and microorganisms in the soil. I learnt so much from this book although the attitude of the entrenched interests within forestry drove me to anger and tears on occasion. It isn’t an easy read, especially if English is not your first language and you aren’t familiar with all the botanical and scientific vocabulary, but I think you would be fascinated by it if you do not already know it.

I live somewhat similar to Kalle, with my wife on a mountain top in northern Värmland. It's a tiny, old forest finn Cottage rebuilt to "modern" 1900s standards. Only a woodstove for heat and cooking. I hope to get sheep one day too. But we only have 3 hectares of forest and open field. But maybe that is enough? The high altitude make our climates very similar.

The limited factor is always the winter feed. How much hay does one need and how much can one produce. With regenerative practices one can maximize the amount one can produce on a given area, but before the vitality has been restored it can be a bit tricky. If one are able to purchase hay to a reason able price, then that could be a solution in the beginning. We only got about 3 hectares to play with here, but many many more hectares of forest.

Wendy Perrins You are such special people and we love watching your videos. Ivar is such a gorgeous little boy and you are very good parents. Keeping fighting for your forests I only wish we were closer to help you in your fight, your little piece of heaven does now need to be ruined by big business but it is happening all over the world today. My husband and I have been very lucky to have lived in a world that was not so greedy and to now have to see what money is doing to the beauty of our countries is very sad for us to see. Let’s hope that these rich greedy people will produce children that can see what their parents are doing to destroy the world and turn back time before it is too late. This greedy people who think they have the right to tell everyone how they will live just sickens me and my husband. We remember how food should smell and taste and it isn’t what we are seeing on our store shelves today. I feel very sad when I see people spending their hard earned money on tasteless rubbish because they don’t know any differently. Thank you for your beautiful videos and please look after yourselves. ❤️ It’s not something we will see but we can hope that people will once again start thinking of others people and respecting how they want to live on their land.

So it was the Finns that embraced the löyly, which Google Translation says means "Steam or Heat." We have Finns, Swedes, German, Norwegian, Italian and others here in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan and in school we learned about these cultures, but it takes Mathias to reveal the truth that Finns championed the Sauna despite the Christians objection to the practice of nudity. Where would we be without the Finns? Mathias, as a Drone Pilot you are the best. I flinch every time you fly through the tree branches and I think, 'How is he able to do that?' He is a Finlander!
