What struck me first in this video was Ivar…playing with a tree branch, a stone, the puddle of water he jumped into with his boots…then his sweet innocent giggles and laughter. Those simple things in nature where he used his imagination and found true joy. Later he followed Mom with a load of hay for the sheep. Walking with his tree branch like a little shepherd with his flock of sheep. Would every child be so grateful to experience his joy living on a farm with parents that love him. Ivar needs little to be so happy:) He makes me smile when he tries to do what his father does…using his fathers hammer to pound on wood. And sitting with his grandfather at play. His sweet laughter echoes through the forest where birds are singing, the sound of the water rushes over the the rocks in the stream, and the sunlight casts his small shadow on the farm ground…where his little feet leave their many footprints as he follows his parents listening to their words and watching everything they do. I loved the length of this video. Mathias you put your heart and soul into making your dream of the sauna come true. The length of the video was an expression of how much your dream meant to you. Excellent excellent excellent :)

There has been a Finnish community here in midcoast Maine in the USA for a number of generations and they have a "Finn-Am" Society that in years past built a few saunas to raffle off as fundraisers to maintain their Finnish church and for other projects. One day I was driving past the home of one of the builders where the sauna was loaded on a trailer to take to local Agricultural fairs to sell raffle tickets. But on that spring day I just stopped by the road and purchased 3 tickets at $5 each. On a following September evening my husband and I were sitting around our cookstove and the phone rang and very surprisingly it was from the Finn-Am annual meeting where they drew the winning ticket and it was MINE!!! It took me a minute to even remember that I had bought a ticket since it was nearly 6 months earlier. They offered me either the building or One Thousand dollars cash. I took a few minutes to discuss it with my husband and we decided that somehow we could get it to our in-town backyard. It was built on skids so it could be put on rollers and moved quite readily. When it was delivered a few days later there were two trees (not on our property!) at the corner of our house that would not let the 8X12 (I think) building (it looks a lot like yours tho the your siding is far more elegant!) pass so it took some time to get permission and then get those two dying ash trees cut but eventually it came moving day and with a couple of friends and come-a-longs we winched our new suana about 125 feet down a gentle hill into its home. This was nearly 20 years ago now. So your sauna story here brings so many wonderful memories back about getting the sauna located and also my weekly sauna partner would faithfully come every Sunday evening for years and we enjoyed many sacred loyly experiences of water on the stones - I bought a book to learn about it! I treasure your reverence around building and using your sauna in JUST the RIGHT way/s. My you return in all seasons for many years to come to your "temple" which I'm sure you will. Bravo, Mathias.

Hey Matthias, as a fellow Finn living outside of Finland. I FEEL YOU. I have been struggling to explain my love for sauna in Germany. It's not a wellness thing, like everyone here thinks. It's a cultural thing. A thing for the body AND soul. Sauna is holy and sauna is not holy at the same time. I'm so happy for you that you finally have your own sauna. Hyviä löylyjä!

Words weren't needed to convey your enthusiasm, as anyone could see the genuine pride and satisfaction you take in these accomplishments. Small steps, little tasks, eventually lead to great things. It can be discouraging to look at all the work that still needs to be done, and we allow ourselves to become overwhelmed. But I've since learned to embrace being better. No matter the project, no matter the task, is it better than it was? Yes? Then it is good. I cleaned today. Is my house like a museum? No. It's it cleaner than it was before? Yes? Then it is good.

It's peace, hack the trees, light a fire in the sauna oven. put the wash water to warm up, add the trees to the oven until the sauna is ready. The whole process is like the impressive peace of the soul and the delight of the mind. What an outstanding video and the music is perfect and so soothing for the soul. The location of your sauna on the creek is perfect too with other sounds of nature as part of the experience. So beautiful.

It’s absolutely amazing!! Only one difference between Russian and Finland sunna it’s a brooms. You can use oak or Birch or fir brooms. Try it and you feel all the colors of sunna soul!!! Good Job! Enjoy your sunna!!

In the beginning of your video, you say you can't really express what it means to you, but the joy in your eyes and face when you say that, completely conveys the depth of meaning to us. The entire building process and explanation after, did not surpass the joy you showed when you first said it, and every time I thought back on this vid over the last ten days, I just mostly remembered seeing that utter joy in your eyes. The whole building is great, and you know what we say about it not being exactly plumb/true? *It's just a hair out of square* And that's okay! ;-)

This sauna will strengthen your body and soul, but this you know, has been handed down through the generations. It‘s really such a beautiful work of art, well worth all the work invested ☺️ What awesome creations you‘ve built for your family, together with your family. I loved the dive into the ice cold water at the end . . . exilerating I‘m sure after the intense heat & so very healthy! Enjoy & God bless

I am so impressed with your determination to get your sauna built. It looks very well built and I can't wait to see it finished. I live in the Adirondack mountains and have been thinking of getting one to help get through the cold months. There is a guy down the road from me that builds them in a barrel shape. I drive by all the time but never pull over to talk to him. I think I will soon :) I hope it brings you peace and well deserved relaxation. Nice job.

As a Native American who has learned the value of the Sweat Lodge I can say that it is hard to put into words how my spirit feels after a sweat, but the closest I can do is that imagine your body and mind and soul are are needing something that helps dissolve all the stress that the world and yourself can place on you... and imagine it all melting away as you sweat and suffer and embrace the suffering till you are free of all the suffering all the weight of life and when you reemerge you get a fresh slate on life. That man's smile @ 7:08 says it all.

Another beautiful story of your life and how rewarding the work is when done with love. Your sauna is excellent in proportion and the care you took to bring the wood it's best qualities is amazing. I also want to commend you on your dedication to your wife and son. Every man in American should learn how to be as patient and kind as you. Blessings.

It's good that you've done this for yourself Mathias, as a Brit, I hadn't realised what it meant for your soul. I feel your frustration, after 50 years, I've learned that perfectionism is bad. So it was a stove - I wondered what it was when it was covered up next to the river. Wonderful cinematography, and a wonderful journey.

Nothing compares to an actual wood burning sauna with a fresh water lake or river close by. Another favourite sauna word we use is Tuli Mikko which roughly translates to the person that tends to the sauna fire and keeps it at our sweet spot of around 90 celsius :) Great job Mathias!

Some of my most beautiful memories from childhood, were the summers I spent with my Finnish relatives in the UP of Michigan. They all had a sauna and to this day, I can still smell the wood burning and hear the water on the rocks sizzle. My grandmother would say "let's go sauna." I wish I could go back to those days, they were the best.
