To more easily make those overlapping wood cuts for doors, etc. (called “ship lap”), you could invest in a dado blade set for your table saw.

The stain usually changes slightly when it dries. Then, it can change again. over the next few days as it weathers. Still, the doors will be a great addition to the bird house, for warmth and security.

I like the board and batten look, and I'm sure the chickens and geese will too, lol! There's a blue painted board and batten house in my area, and it's just gorgeous. Please watch out for the cats outside too, those eagles will take anything they think they can manage. Great job guys! Peace

A eagle swoop down and took one of our kittens 😸. Had no idea it was near, completely shocked. A lot of 😢 tears nd anger. So protect your darling cat! Love the hen 🏠 . Is it possible to build a wire enclosure attached to the house, with wire on top of the enclosure. Protecting the chickens and giving you peace of mind from the birds that will come and get one for their supper.

Excited about your live!! I like your tall table that you are using, saves on your back. The Stain in the states., we use a rag to apply, leave on for the wood to soak in a few minutes, and then wipe off some with a different rag. Our stain is more watery looking and more chemical smell. Not sure what chemical is used but you have to clean up with paint thinner. I wonder if you are using the stain correctly ? The doors will look great. No on the arch door. Go for sealed. Peace and love. I take back on the stain. We have outdoor deck stain that is applied with a roller. You are probably using so you don’t have to seal….

Every time I see your house and other older houses I feel it would benefit from having most of the house insulated with foam panels covered with a pvc or rubber lining. Insulation on the north east and west sides screwed against the outer walls with some durable pvc/ rubber lining that forms a moist barrier on the walls and goes into a ditch at the bottom to hold drainage pipes and have it filled in with gravel. This way you can keep the bottom of your foundation dry with the excess water running of to a low point on the property for drainage whilst burying the outer walls. Once you have the outer wals covered up like this with drainage pipe filled in with gravel/ or broken bricks for example just add soil to the point of it being just below the gutters. You could leave the south facing wall exposed (so will windows and doors be extra exposed if you don’t add some barriers next to it to hold the soil. On the south side I would add a small second hand greenhouse conservatory as an addition on the house to catch all those sun rays and store that heat in the house for winter, all that insulated mass can store heat for the winter. If the walls are thick enough to carry the sideward load and you have the funds to buy the insulation and drainage materials and hire a digger for a day then this could greatly improve the insulation of the house for decades to come, especially if you also take on the roof. The great thing of creating a house in the ground is the efficiency of building it fast and efficient for a long beneficiary time. Mike Oehler wrote a great book about cheap berm house constructions and very efficient greenhouse designs with cold air sink holes for instance and other improvements. His books; -The $50 & up underground house book. -The earth sheltered solar greenhouse book. (How to build an energy free year around greenhouse). But I would use some root barrier product on the gravel adding sand on top of that to keep the dirt out of the drainage gravel/ or for instance broken up brick bits for extra drainage. Sand will pile up in a 45 degree natural angle (or you add more 70 degrees a meter and a half high with a more gradually sloped topsoil on top of that. It doesn’t have to be pure sand you buy, you could use some soil of the property instead of all that sand as long as it drains and isn’t made of pure clay And .around the windows you’ll need some barriers to hold the soil or you’ll have some wall expose. But all the buried parts help to insulate in the winter and to keep it cool in the summer due to all the mass. Then I would use tight packed straw bales as a cheap efficient roof insulation (fire proof if packed tight). The chicken coop looks great by the way, nice build.

When you make the enclosure, bury some chicken wire along the “walls” to stop foxes and ferrets from digging and stealing the birdies. I’m guessing that’s what you’ll be doing to stop the hawks…or just a roof?

From what I remember the male goose is very protective and very aggressive to anyone or anything who comes near his mate. So, it's a better idea to keep the geese separate from chickens. We had pair at one point. Nasty after they started mating.
