Maybe buy a Maddox for the digging. It has a pick on one side an a wide thick blade on the other. Hard work. But it's honest an for a good reason. Enjoy it when your done.

Brother built a cabin in MT on the side of a mountain. While they were excavating they discovered some veins of gold. Amazing what can happen when building remotely.

No one ever asks if this is legal or not. Most people don't own lots of land anymore and building on community or someone else's property without permission will get you in trouble. And getting permission is even harder since most people aren't that nice of people.
