I want to say to all beginner players, as a 2k rated player who spends too much time on Twitch and KZbin, this is hands down the best series going. Finally a top player with the sense to show the overwhelming importance of learning the fundamentals before anything else. This is LITERALLY exactly what I always wanted when I was just starting. Concrete rules in a concrete order. I hated so much when I'd hear "oh break that rule here because x," "Oh, no, x doesn't apply here because y," "No, y is irrelevant in this position because z" Okay fine, but I didn't know. And there are 1000 other reasons to break 1000 other rules, and before you know it you might as well not have rules at all. I also love that Aman is willing to take losses in these positions because if I was a 400 today, I'd be asking "why did this lose?" and over time I'd ARRIVE at the answers, and find out WHY I'm breaking the rules and once I've found out WHY, then I'd know WHEN. I almost feel ike I'll benefit from watching all of these simply so I can unlearn some of the "imaginary" rules I developed to explain exceptions and exceptions to exceptions and so on.

This is amazing! My one critique of Naroditsky's (excellent) education speedrun series was that he knew what would work and let that guide him to pick the winning option among multiple potential principles that he could have applied. Knowing how to pick that winning option when other principles seemed equally plausible but would eventually lose is a skill I don't have, which is why I'm 1000 rated not 3000 rated. It's refreshing to see an even more fundamental approach of sticking to principles even when it costs you games, because that's a more realistic picture of how we low-rated players actually play. Great series, looking forward to more.

I have never seen a better approach towards teaching chess, atleast on youtube! You keep the discipline of playing within the limits of a 400 elo player but also give him subtle subconcious nudges that will, along with building basic habits, push him to look ahead for those 3 move tactics, knife forks etc from the comfort of his base. And this process is fun! which is what chess needs to be perceived.

Thanks a lot! :-) I mostly enjoy when Eric plays (no offense Aman :P), because he usually explains what he's doing or gives a shortbreak down of the situation ("Get the open file", "I want to put my knight here", "He can't move his bishop"), this really helped me a lot to understand that not every move needs to be a killer move, or how you can come up with a plan, and that you often have to change your plan. Yasser's series on your channel helped me to understand the fundamentals (or... elements ;D) better, too. Curly-hair-dude-boy's speedrun has helped me improve the opening phase tremendously. Thank you for this video. I have probably watched a few hundred videos trying to get a grip on chess. I'm a very process-oriented person and yours is the first I have found that one, didn't rush through things faster than I could track and two, actually made a complicated process seem simple. Good job.

That opening clip had me laughing so hard. The gameplay just summarizes the difference between a beginner and a gm perfectly. The GM steadily making progress and the beginner making endless random checks.

This is what I need. Started play a year ago at work. Playing online. I make such stupid Misstakes. I got up to 1k rating. Got back to 700 now, been here for two months. Sometime i play like a god, sometimes like a 400. This is just what I need. Thanks 👍😊

this is the best rating ladder climbing series on youtube its not just aman explaining how he's destroying the 400's with his gm skills, (as this kind of thing all too often is) which would be a very boring series, but instead making himself into a particularly principled 400 and showing how one can use being principled at that level to advance out of it

I really dig Amans attitude in this video. Laid back, allowing losses talking slowly. I wish I had seen this as my first instructional video on chess. Mind you I am new still, but have seen other stuff before this video. Looking forward to fall back on these rules. Great work.

Great series. I really like how unlike other GM vs 400 series Aman doesn't mind losing a game here and there to show people that it's fine and they shouldn't get discouraged. Very often instructional content boils down to the "Just make a good move 4Head" and this is a wonderful exception.

I find it awesome that you follow your own rules and lose with it more often than not, especially in your first games. It's not about winning, it's about learning. And when one tries something new, it usually goes that way...

The way Hambleton explains "Would a 400 think of this? No" actually helps so much, I feel like I've been overthinking a lot of what I'm doing with the game and that lead me to where I'm at now. Here.

I thought this was a smart approach to help with strategy. And I think you should continue these as the rating build. Increasing the level you are playing to match your rating category. Would really be interested to see you do this for the next few levels. Introducing those tactics, and whats to look for as you implement Drop those beats.. wubz wubz

This is a really unique way of showing growth and improvement in chess - rather than just a typical rating climb, that many other channels have done. Nothing wrong with them at all, but it’s great to see you’ve put your own spin on it. Like Danya’s “speedrun” where he plays 2 games in half an hour and analyses the hell out of it, or Gotham’s “how to win at chess” where he shows what he thinks you should do at specific rating levels. Awesome content, can’t wait for the rest of it - intrigued to see how my own rating is challenged, I know I miss tactics or sometimes see great ones, but I can still make blunders and sometimes even miss my opponents blunders if I’m not familiar with the positions
