you have no idea how helpful this was for this novice builder....I could not get my trusses right until I found this video....drawing it out like this made it quick and easy and I was able to bang out the trusses I need for my shed....thanks so much for doing this

I’ve built quite a few add on garages and storage buildings but I never thought of making myself a template on the floor of the building for the roof truss. That way they should all be exactly the same I think he did a great job and I think those of you that are thinking you should just build the wall and put on the wall 90% of that stuff doesn’t come out square no matter what you do unless you have something to back that up like a template

drawing the template on the floor actually has helped me picture how I will frame out the trusses for my shed roof! there may be simpler more intuitive ways to achieve the desired end, but the concrete visuals are exactly what I needed to demystify the process!

This is a very instructional video for me as I'm not familiar with building a roof. Laying out on the floor gives a visual of the parts and how they go together. From that I can I can use a framing square to see how it is used. If I went with a framing square initially I'd probably make some mistakes. Many comments are against floor layout and I can see it would be a waste of time if someone was fairly familiar with roofing but not for someone starting out. Thank you for a very helpful video.

@REVerbtalk
@REVerbtalk 5 жыл бұрын
Jack, I was in the backroom diving into roof building. It's not even remotely close to hard once you remove the overly stated nonsense they throw in. You want a 4/12... you simply are saying you want a "4 pitch roof" F the "12". 12 will never change so don't even worry about it. After I removed all the nonsense I kept learning, it's simply as hell and hopefully I can help you. Lets say for example you are building a 21x36 shed using your 4 pitch. 1. Measure the total span from outside to outside of the shed(21') 2. Divide it by 1/2 (10 1/2) That's it for that, hold on to that 10 1/2 and let's focus on the board now. Go snag you a 2x6 or 2x4 whatever you are using to frame up the roof... lay it down, snag your speed square and let's nail this sucker down... PRE: Now for me, I have the construction Master Pro calculator. You can download the app as well. Your speed square gives the answer away too so remember that. 3. At this point decide on your overhang(Example: 1ft overhang)... mark a line 1ft from the end and scratch it on purpose(no cut). Now here comes the easy parts that i noticed that nobody just gets to the point on... 4. From that scratch line, measure up to 10 1/2... minus 3/4in (9' 3/4"), put your pivot point from your square on that 9' 3/4" line, pivot to "4" on your square at the "COMMON" section. Hold it firm and mark that sucker. There's your ridge cut. 5. Now, from that line on #3, take your tape measure and measure up 1 1/2" on that line, turn your speed square around and put the 4 on the bottom of the board and the pivot on that 1 1/2" mark you made... mark that sucker. That's your seat cut. 6. Last thing, Put your 4 on the edge of that overhang section... mark that sucker, that's your fascia cut You're done. Notice everything is "4" and it's a matter of the measurement. Nothing difficult at all. I was scared shitless until I just said f it and literally went at it in the backroom and noticed everything lines up without the overly stated stuff. Find your angle and you make 3 cuts of your choice of pitch, that's it. Now you can literally make qhatever roof you want because even if you are making the braces, you still use the "4"(10.5*) angle mark and you set your braces in. I hope this helps

@REVerbtalk

ok fantastic video no shade, but extremely overkill on the explanation. I respect how you explained it but literally i discovered today it's not that complicated and so much simpler when you remove the nonsense. You are providing some good aspects to the build but for explanation, just keep it simple. For a newbies learning curve: Span: 8 ft Dvided by 2 = 4ft - Decide your overhang, Measure and Cut the board at the 4ft mark from your seat cut mark... Cutting from left of the board(Rafter): 1. Place your speed square at the edge of the board on the number "8" on the COMMON section, mark a line. 2. Choose your overhang length, mark a line for no cut and forget about it 3. Flip your square over(straight-edge on the right) and put the "8" on the bottom of the board. Measure up 1 1/2" up on that line and mark the thing, there's your seat/birdsmouth cut. 4. Go to the 4ft mark, take off 3/4" off(3f 11 1/4")... cut the thing. Why? Because when you cut the rest of your rafters, you have accounted for the 1 1/2 ridge board. Trusses: Same exact thing as the above except don't cut 3/4" off.... Repeat your cuts for however many you need. Add your gussets, lift it, nail it and move on. It took me a long ass time because people overly explain it and/or could never just get to the point. This is explained well and no shade at it. But removing all the extra riff raff and simply saying the pitch is your key throughout the process of building a rafter, I finally got it down within 5 minutes learning on my own.

I like your video very much. I build a small house, 6/4m and I,m building the roof now. I bought some beams for the attic, they are 8/8cm, (the base of the rafters, the rest of the rafters are also 8/8cm.), they are put horizontally on the walls (concrete blocks), the base of the attic. I,m a little worried that they are not thick enough, I mean those that are put horizontally. Coud you tell me if they are thick enough? Thank you so much.

He's also based the method on a system for people who have a framing square, or speed square and are using basic tools. Just because it's trusses and not rafters doesn't make it inferior FFS. They put in a splice every other rafter about thirteen inches long and at the back of the splice they used just one nail. In some places they put a nail on each side of the splice at the back. @@richardrodgers1883 don't want to arguee. But as long as the floor is square and you build the walls square and plumb flush with edge of floor the rafters should match right to top plates. For some people it just might be easier to lay out and assemble components on a large flat surface. Probably depends on physically capable and how much arthritis is in your joints.😄😄
