Managing editor David Popp takes you on a tour of the HO scale Virginian Ry. He'll show you some of the key features of this expandable 4 x 8 model train layout. You'll also learn how the prototype railroad inspired the design. The first part of the Virginian Ry. series appears in the January 2012 issue of Model Railroader.

As a Virginian fan it's great to see people modeling the railroad. It is so easily forgotten.

This layout has been one of my favorites for a while. When I can build my layout I am going to start small then add on to it. I built a lot of layouts and going small to bigger is the best way to build so you are not over whelm with 1000 projects all at once!

Fantastic layout. The yellow Virginian locomotive is very sharp!

I really appreciate the work on the small layout as most of us will never have 30-40' layout!

It's great to see people doing something creative rather than being on facebook or fiddling with thoose smartphones. I remember wednesday nights when I was kid, busses from the airforce base in town where I grew up, came and picked us up and one of the activities that you could choose from was to build models. Together with real fighter pilots. And it was free of charge! How great wasn't that!

This layout is amazing! It's just about all I would want with a small model railroad. I would consider building this someday, but not now since I'm only 14. I'm excited to see how this layout gets built, though!

good work on this one MR. Layouts tell history that's why we rail fans build them. the Virginian is a coal railroad today it is known at the NS Pocahontas Sub which goes from Norfolk to the coal mines in Pennsylvania and all the East Coast Coal States

There are several factors in diy railroad layouts. One resource I found which successfully combines these is the Jareks Hobby Club (check it out on google) it's the most incredible blueprint that I have ever heard of. look at all the unbelievable info .

great video! one question though: with that morse virginian loco, why is the cab side all the way to the back? Considering the low visibility issues with high hood locos, one would think that the cab should be facing towards the front

@vidfreak727 thats because like most southeastern railroads they ran thier locomotives long hood forward for better crew protection at grade crossings, plus it was similar to being in a steam loco kind of a heritage thing.N&W and Southern railways all ran LHF also and the long hood end was considered the front.They did this until the new saftey cab locos came out.

The messed up part most of them were built on murder. S.f. and rio grande. Pennsylvania actually buried people under the tracks to not pay them. Was an investigation but they would have to tear down to much line to find them. Do some history research. You see. Even history channel does blood feuds santa fe and rio are 2 of the main ones for this.

Unfortunately the H16-44's really didn't operate the mine runs on the Virginian. They ran everything on the eastern mainline, while the western coalfields and their mine-runs were the 25 larger H24-66's territory.

Late to the party, but wanted to ask has anyone built or giving a idea to building it in N scale? I have been thinking about it on a 32 x 84 door... would love some feed back on this idea.
@thedude3423
@thedude3423 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't modeled it in N, but should transfer just fine. Wider curves, longer run, etc...can leave as designed or add tracks, scenery, etc. I would personally leave track plan as is and have longer run in N. Could extend track between scenes. Longer runs between scenes/towns always add realism! 👍😊🚂

When model railroading was at some of its best and most fun. Now it's rivet counters all over the place WAY WAY WAY over priced rolling stock with collosal locomotives not able to go around any kind of radius and every breakable detail that snaps just looking at them.
