Great work! I especially like that resulting diorama looks interesting from every angle. You really created a world on that round base.

Great work Doc... tiny details make all the difference. Well done.

Extremely well done. I wish there were more kits at this scale available, besides the Batman series.

Fangtastic job on Mr. Death (the Grim Reaper)! I'm looking forward to using some of your suggestions on my own kit. Thank you so much for your tutorials and all you do for the hobby.

The leaf litter looks like it came from white birch trees. We had a couple in our yard when I was growing up and I used to do the same thing!
@shellystone46036 жыл бұрын
Yes - that's it! I remember these from when I was growing up as well. When broken apart, they look like little tiny leaves which is why they work so well for this purpose. The finished model looks GREAT!!!

Birch tree for the leaves. White bark. I collected a bunch from the tree in our park. Reaper looks great.

Dr. I've said it a number of times. You are a master and an inspiration. You took a pretty horrible and "smelly" kit and made it into something awesome. :D I know I rag on Moebius, and personally I feel rightly so. That said I do realize that you can do some really fantastic things with their kits, it just takes a lot more work and patience. My favorite things are the touches you added. The eyes and the putty work on the skull really took the entire ascetic to a new level. I also like the hour glass and the collar clasp. Overall I love those eyes. Something so simple, but has such an impact. My least favorite thing would be the tree. It looks too plasticy. My only thought is that it would be nice to add some moss to the tree to emulate Spanish moss. Perhaps some shredded reindeer moss? And give it several coats of flat varnish so it looks more like bark. It's a tough one.

Should of just replaced it with a root. In the end I was figuring Death is sort of a cartoony character, so the tree is there to match the style. Thought maybe a realistic looking tree might make Death look more fake. Still, the hanging moss idea would of been a good balance.

Awesome build, Tony. Given your Discworld inspiration, I would not be surprised to see you revisit this diorama to add Death of Rats!

I couldn't find a right scale rat! I was even willing to sculpt the robe and scythe myself.

i think the leaves are just right ... its the figure thats the focal, not the leaves ... i think you have done it justice ... I'm now looking at doing this kit now ...

Placement of the center piece in a diorama is something I haven't seen discussed much and I think it could be interesting to do so. Many painting tutorials tell you to avoid using the center as imbalanced things are more visually interesting than balanced things are. With miniature dioramas we seem to rarely put things imbalanced this way and instead place them dead center to draw all the attention to them. I've read several books on the matter and they usually speak of finding the center balance then building things around them. I wonder if the topic is one worth exploring since it's very underdeveloped in the hobby.

I don't know if you did it intentionally or if it was just a happy accident while sculpting, but his left eyebrow (browbone?) looks slightly raised which actually gives his expression a bit more character. All in all, I'd say this came out looking great, even if the various improvements were frustrating to deal with.

Uh, it was intentional! Yeah, that's the ticket!

I hope you don't mind a couple of constructive criticisms? This is a fantastic build and a lovely tribute to the late great Terry Pratchett. A faint blue highlight along the sharp edge of the scythe would look great (its a book feature). Ok I got this from your M.L.E.V.5 build, blue LEDs in the skull would look great. But as I said, fantastic build!

The leaf litter was likely from a birch tree, I know cause I used to have one too.
@chrissteadman46146 жыл бұрын
Very nice indeed. I don't think that the leaf litter is out of scale with the tree and the gravestone. If it is supposed to be human sized, it is the Reaper that doesn't match the base in scale.

I don't think any one ever noticed you had nerve damage. I've been a fan of yours for all but a decade now and never once have I heard you mispronounce a word that I wouldn't consider to be some thing normal. Even then you correct yourself soon after.
@ThePaintingClinic6 жыл бұрын
You don't get to hear all the outtakes. It's easier on camera because I can yell and it's easier to enunciate the words. Gets harder with words I don't use on a regular basis. I practiced scythe for two days and I could still barely do it.
@graveofmonsters40766 жыл бұрын
Do you mind if I ask what caused the nerve damage? Your content is always top quality. It sucks that you have a tough time making it and you have to do extra prep work to get there but it's definitely worth it. I would consider few people to have the influences you have had on getting new painters off the ground. I always recommend your basics videos to new guys.
