Nice video. I'm a long time traditional archer. The arrow can go on either side of the bow, depending on culture/shooting style. Assuming a right handed shooter (arrow in the right hand with bow in the left), Mediterranean (European) finger draw has the arrow on the left side of the bow Mongolian and Japanese thumb draws have the arrow on the right side of the bow. For the models, keeping the arrow on the left side is fine.
@ScruffyCrow3 жыл бұрын
It looks a bit awkward on the model but I'll keep do them on the left from now. Have you seen Shads vids on the subject, seems like right might have been done too if not commonly.

You could add a thin stripe to the shields arms, and fix them after painting. These figures are well done, pity they are a little small. For the heads that are a little fiddly, generally a metal pin is helpful

I've been building a force...though I've largely been using Reapers Anhurian metals save for the cavalry. I'd already made a few for other games that need to be rebased. They've been converted from lances to spears for the cavalry with a few bits from Fireforge's kits and a banner/instrument from other Reaper stuff...along with a separate Reaper mini for a caster. With building units, I would suggest making the 20th infantry to have more use for the unit in options.

The arrow goes on the left of the bow with a western finger release, it goes on the right with an Asian thumb release. 🙂 Loving your videos btw 👍

Yeah, I see that now. However check out the whole impossible realese Shad saga, seems like contemporary art and speed of reload make right hand side with western realese likely, at least occasionally.

@@ScruffyCrow I mean contemporary art also has spearmen with no shields, all norman warriors in mail and helmet, etc. How much knowledge does your contemporary artist today have about military gear? =) Always found that part of the argument a flimsy one.

The issue with the arms and shields puts me in mind of how Fire-Forge handles it. The have a lot of arms with flattened sections to keep their shields close to the body, but other arms are fully detailed if you want to either use different shields or poses.

Thanks a lot for this review, I was on the fence about it. Could you perhaps show how the figures look next to kits from other manufacturers' models? As in, other sort of 'budget' plastic kits?

These are the only plastic humans I own unfortunately, at least for now. Is there a specific range you were looking at, I believe they scale best with gripping beast and they are a bit shorter and squatter than Perry and Victrix.
@bobcrutch89053 жыл бұрын
Hello Scruffy...a good set I may invest in some myself as I don't have many "goodie humans" especially spear and shield armed bods ( I always thought spear and shield were lets say poor quality weapons, spear and shield armed guys always ended up guarding doors and dying without to much bother in my dungeon crawl games of D and D, how wrong I was...) anyhoo the shield problem could be fixed with a ball of greenstuff popped in the back and its tacky so no gluing ( but its hassle you could do without IF they had just made them flat in the first place, like they have the wood texture so surely it would have been easier for the sculpter as well into the bargain I would have thought) as for heads there's a few bearded heads in the frostgrave soldiers set and the wizards set ( that's what I shall be using), I've only got 20 hand weapon and shield guys to paint and that will be the "evil human" army painted once my grass sheets and tufts turn up I'll base them and then start on my barbarian force I have the leaders done already in a way as I plan to use my frostgrave barbarians warband and wizards which I'll just give a quick repaint to so in effect I'll have used 5 boxes of barbarians though not exactly if you follow me, plus the victrix cavalry they don't have bases so I ordered some standard cavalry bases to put them on which will turn up soon I hope but I've got enough to be going on with in the meantime...cheers now

If you were getting only one box of human soldiers to support a Dwarven army, which would be better 20 spear and shield and 10 bowmen, or 20 hand weapon and shield and 10 bowmen?
@ScruffyCrow2 жыл бұрын
You might find 10 human bowmen a bit wimpy, for the others it depends on how you want to use them, have a look at what the spears give you and decide if that's something they might need.

@@ScruffyCrow i have a bow there's an arrow rest on the left side of the bow, i understand there are bows that shoot on the opposite side, likely bows in other areas of the world, where they practice odd methods of archery, but when holding a bow with the left hand and drawing with the right it doesn't make sense aiming or resting the arrow on the other side, it isn't in line with your eye. Youd have to cant your bow in the opposite direction which doesn't feel natural, since your arm naturally wants to cant the bow slightly to the right. Most traditional fantasy uses traditional archery, particularly ones hinted as being loosely based on western europe, it's up to you to decide what your going to do with your figs, but i dont think thats what the sculptor intended.
