Today we're building our coal power plant and it's gonna be big, because we need it to give us enough power to support us until we develop fuel generators! What do you think of the facilities design, do you like it?

Somehow I lived on 8 coal plants until I got fuel. Well, I did make sure to more or less rush to it and I don't have a stream to maintain. That held me on 16 generators until I (again, plugged away at getting blenders) to get the fuel generator facility turned to turbo fuel. Now (or soon when I finish the conversion) will be able to have over 100 generators. Close to but not quite unlimited power.

Final comment. I may try to build a little plant there. But I'd definitely save the power from overclocking water extractors, and find a way to fit 18. Also, I had a stupid, crazy idea about fluids. Given, you can use a water extractor and a water pump plus the ~10% margin to lift >30m in a key pipe, and as long as you connect that pipe in a loop up top, the game physics will pull the other fluid all the way up from the water extractors without any other pumps. I currently do this with 43 water extractors in my "Compact Compact Coal Power Plant" (if only it had a more compact name, and a different acronym than CCCP, which is also problematic for entirely different reasons). But that technique is limited to about 30-33-ish m in height. So can I find a way to cheat the game and save power, using one, or maybe even no pipes at all, to lift an arbitrary number of pipes up? That will be a future experiment. But the idea is, we get about 8m free head lift from a filled fluid buffer. So as long as the first buffer is about 10-11m high, we can fill it. Then we get a free 8m lift to the next, and so on. We can use as many unpowered pumps (check valves) as we want. If we take the key pipe, go up, X-junction every 8m, and try series (parallel with check valves to prevent sloshing) fluid buffers, we might just get all the way up. Granted, this will probably look like some unholy rosary bead necklace into the sky, so we might want to cover it up, or display it proudly behind glass, preferably partially obscured. Industrial Fluid Buffer would get us 12m. The only drawback I can think of is that this could take a REALLY long time to successively fill up every buffer. To that end, a larger fluid buffer holds 6x more fluid but only gets 50% more height, so to minimize buffer fill time, it'd be best to use the small buffers. But say we go 90m in the air, which I am roughly estimating as a height here, that's the initiat 10m+ from extractors, and 10 more fluid buffers, maybe 11-12 if we drop 0.5-1m between fluid buffers. Wicked gnarly. Can't wait to go test that out. :o)

A more future proof layout could be 4 blocks of 13 coal generators and 5 water extractors in each block. 54x15=780 ;-) so such setup can be later fed with just one level 5 conveyor from one overclocked level 3 miner. Also each block requires 585 water so 5 pumps will do perfect producing 600 with level 2 pipe transporting also 600.

I do like the cliff-side design. I often considered trying to make split level factories around the waterfalls nearby the rocky desert from my first save, but I never did manage to keep focused on it, and I sort of fell off in the middle of update 3. This here got me thinking though, about what a build would look like if never built permanent foundations and only used walls, pillars, and beams for the entirety of your factories. In my mind it seems like a cool idea to integrate the landscape more, but I imagine the reality would just wind up as a spaghetti factory.

I got the game on the Ukraine bundle and hadn't installed it until now (even though I had been told it was extremely good). I installed it and, although I was enjoying it, I was struggling a lot with certain things. Then I stumbled upon this series. I am speechless. I hadn't felt so at peace while watching a youtube series before. The mood you set is perfect, the pacing is on point, and the explanations are clear and helpful, while not being extremely long and difficult to follow. I am honestly astounded at the level of production of each and every one of the videos, too. Honestly, thank you. These videos are pure stress relief made mp4.

BTW, just a thought which may make your videos look even more pretty, have you tried to use Nvidia DLDSR in this game? After trying it out I'm pretty sure I'll never go back to playing without it as it brings so much extra details and reduces shimmering/aliasing a lot, basically same as with any TAA-based graphics. That's of course if you have the hardware to push it, but I guess you do, it's not that GPU heavy game after all.

Nice build, straight forward. I was working on 96 genny compacted coal plant, and almost had it, but realized if I overclocked all generators and miners, optionally underclock assemblers and water extractors (as numbers indicate), I could pull a few hundred more MW out. So, 810 on a 6 lane bus (3x pure coal, 3x pure sulfur, mk.2 miner, mk.3 conveyor belt), would feed 56 coal generators, requiring 33 assemblers at 98 or 99%, and 43 water extractors at 99%. Constraints, trying to cram into minimal footprint, using a single pumped line up to fluid buffer (maybe forces other lines up?), with 2 layers of assemblers and coal bus above coal generators, water pipes also, everything feeding down, and expandable for when belts/miners/pipes upgrade. Problem, 43 water extractors don't fit neatly under footprint of tightly packed (clipping) coal generators, no room for 17 pipes, 56 gen, 43 water ext, 17 assembler, 17 pipes, the numbers are lousy for logistics, but (approximately) idealized for power production. Less than 1% excess coal, sulfur, compacted coal production (minimal back pressure) to buffers (for headroom for future quick modifications with no downtime) and sink (maybe route excess to a trash bus to minimize use of undersaturated awesome sinks by creating a centralized waste plant). Playing with idea of a 2x3-tiered loop manifold. Ideally it would use an underflow merger, but I can just use splitters from top to feed lower belts, using the lowest belt loop as the singular manifold loop that feeds machines. More or less belts sorted as usual, as in previous 100% clocked genny x 96 with numbers that were nicer, but water extractors and plumbing a big mystery. Maybe 3x5 + 2 on top for symmetry. Need to route in such a way that expanding plant later doesn't require a complete replumbing. design should allow additive construction in a systematic manner. Although such initial plumbing is more complex, space consuming. The 1 or 2 pumps constraint really makes things complex. A fluid buffer may not be strictly necessary and could simplify. Need to pop out a few biomass generators and test ideas to validate proof of concept on small scale, say 5 extractors and 2 full pipes using one pump, with buffers simulating consumers to gague flow. None of this was in the FICSIT training manual, but maybe one day it'll be FICSIT approved. For now, I keep it in my unofficial REKTIT manual of unproven and/or abandonned and/or failed ideas.

Looks great and didn't know yet about the painting thing. However it`s a little difficult to fully understand your overall transport system. So far it cannot be efficient. I don't get why 9 water extractors can be sufficient. Even when fully overclocked, which is madness btw. ^^. In terms of water usage a coal plant best runs at 144%. Because water is not the bottle neck it makes most sense to run a plant 250%, saving coal relatively to 100%. But your results always look very nice and are really inspiring.

Hi TotalXclipse. Great series. Gives me some great ideas. However I heard you say that the pipes going from the 3 water accumulators going into one pipe supplies the coal generators with 900 volume of water. I think this is a mistake. The pipe you are using appears to be maximum 300 volume and that is all it can hold. The Tier 2 pipe has a maximum of 600 volume. I don't think there is any way one pipe can handle 900 volume. If I am wrong, please correct me. Thanks again for the great series.

8:20 - I'd be interested if anyone could elaborate on this point made here. (using fluid buffers for pipes underfeeding a machine) Are pumps not sufficient enough to feed these pipes? I run into issues with fluids all the time and am curious if this is a worthwhile investment for overhauling my factories vertical pipework.
@Xhaleon
@Xhaleon 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about it either in this context. Pump headlift is simply from where the pump's exit is then upwards to its max height. I think what he's doing here is to stabilize the water amount in the pipes since with large, long-distance setups like this the liquid can slosh back and forth a lot and not consistently supply machines. However, it looks like (from the aerial view) he's feeding the buffers first and then the buffers are connected on the other end to the pipes feeding the machines, which won't help with the above. Rather the better way is to put the buffers at some far end of the network and prefill them with water first, so they act like "fake" water sources coming from the opposite end to keep the pipes full. Since he's feeding from below the pipes have to be completely filled with water before the waterline of the whole network can rise up high enough to reach the machines, realistic liquid physics and all. Having buffers helps with keeping those pipes full, but not when they're arranged like that.
@TotalXclipse
@TotalXclipse 2 жыл бұрын
If you're pumping from below the pipe will empty and have to fill up again this can cause the generators to turn on and off. If you use a buffer above the below pipes will always be full as long as the buffer is filled as the water that is used up is immediately filled by water being pushed down - I hope that makes more sense 😅
@Xhaleon
@Xhaleon 2 жыл бұрын
@@TotalXclipse Yes that explanation makes sense. Machines take in liquids in "sips" rather than a continuous flow, so sometimes the sips can be timed just right (wrong) so that the water level will drop down below the lip of the input while another machine wants a sip, so that starved one has to do its shut down animation. Putting buffers in the system lets each buffer output up to the max of the pipe at all times (assuming the tank's full) and helps to refill the vertical feed pipes as fast as possible. However that means they're still affected by distance and sips from machines along the way, so best to put those buffers at the middle and ends of a network.
@DunbarWoodworks
@DunbarWoodworks 2 жыл бұрын
I've never had an issue feeding water from below without a buffer. My last coal factory was like 80 meters above the water so 4 or 5 pumps. However, I also don't mess with minimizing my water extractors, so I always run 1 for every 2 coal plants, which is 60m³ per. Having them over-fed by 10m³ could explain why I've gotten away with no fluid buffers.

@DunbarWoodworks
@DunbarWoodworks 2 жыл бұрын
The barrier trick allows the foundations to be centered under the miner. If you place foundations using the world grid (or try to eyeball it freeform) the miner will never be perfectly centered on the foundation. This trick makes for a cleaner design, especially if you want to enclose the miners. I enclose mine sometimes and with this trick the enclosure has a small 1x2 footprint.

@@MicheleAria Damn don't think I ever tried build mode with pipes. Thanks for the tip.

Total loves using a unpowered pump instead of just using a valve.

Well.... In this video we hadn't reached oil so didn't have valves available 😅

What's the benifit of using an unpowered pump instead of an actual valve? Or was that just because you don't have the rubber for a valve yet?

Life would have been easier by going to the other side of the desert. two normal nodes and an impure one... overclocked at 200% would have given you the same amount of power, and plenty of space to get water and build coal plants without having to pump water up the mountains... But we wouldn't have had this "machicolated" (?) build here.
@TotalXclipse

Yep it definitely would be easier but lots of people build powerplants there because it's so ideal - and I'm trying to avoid the more commonly used spots.

@@TotalXclipse my first time in the desert, back in update 3, I built on the same spot as you, tbf. First I built 8 coal generators... then I torn everything apart and managed to fit 6 water extractors and built 16 coal generators right above them. Too bad it wasn't enough power for my needs, so I eventually I ended up building another powerplant northeast. Anyway, it's part of the fun :)

I was so proud of my 30 generator plant powered by 2 coal nodes...

That's definitely doable if you have MK2 miners 😊

@@TotalXclipse Building coal plants all over the map is my favorite part of the game, sometimes with really dumb setups. One of my favorite builds was a plant that got fed from packaged/unpacked water instead of pipes and pumps. Not at all efficient, but fun to watch. Coal is fun.
