Looking good, Mike. It's really great when you get an excavator that knows what he's doing. We had one when we were in business as an electrical contractor that did all our trenching. When it came time to build our house he was super busy and had hired a guy to help him. That's who he sent out to do our foundation. He came back to do the final grade and he was out there pushing an inch of mud around and not getting anything done. I told him to leave and called the owner to come out an finish it.

Mike, I loved watching the sped-up version of Darren doing such an incredible job of backfilling. That man has truly awesome mad skills! I'm glad that you also included some of the backhoe work at normal speed because I found it to be quite fascinating. If I lived closer to you, I would haul as many of those rocks away for you that I could manually (or womanly) lift up and place into my pickup truck bed, lol. It's Saturday, April 15th, so your framers have probably got the floor joists completed. Mike, I'm thrilled for you, Shelley, Ally, & Emily to have your dreams become a reality. I guess you always see resources in the things you don't have. I kept seeing those big rocks and just keep thinking those big rocks sure would be nice to do some landscaping. Then you said you buried them and my heart sunk. It's impossible to tell grade on a video, but I'm thinking you can tell smooth. That yard ended up looking very smooth once he was done. Our setting in the hills of Columbia County, Oregon, is very similar, but our house build unearthed almost no rocks. As they say, one person's garbage is another person's treasure! When I purchased my acreage, there was a lower portion that had been farmed - probably back in the '30s - but I'm not so sure it ever had a house on it. So once the woods were bulldozed for my homesite and approach road, I started finding Indian artifacts. Makes sense, as it is high ground up above a creek. For awhile, after rains, I would find four or five points every time I looked around. And in the rock caches in the creek, I've found probably 10 stone axeheads, and more between the house site and the creek. But NO pottery - which makes me think these artifacts were lost by Indians hunting game along the creek system, but that did not live there year-round. So, look around, as you never know. And like you, I have a TON of rocks in the ground, and thus hauled in quite a bit of topsoil. The ground is all clay and rocks - so, either muddy or hard as a brick! LOL Great start to your place!
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 Жыл бұрын
That's really cool that you've made so many findings on your place. I've always got my eyes open but so far, nothing. I have considered what you are mentioning, that there may be Indian artifacts, however, I don't live near a river so that may be why I'm not finding anything. There is a lake nearby so I may come across something.
@philipatoz
@philipatoz Жыл бұрын
Mike, if you have a creek or any natural small lake nearby - or if your house site is in the pathway of one of these, then you may have artifacts. Water was key for the Indians just like it is for us today. Plus hunters followed creek systems hunting game, used it to clean game, etc. I always start by looking at any shapes resembling a spearpoint, arrowpoint, axe. Biggest point is that when you first skin off the groundcover, that they very best chance you have of seeing such things.

You may want to swale the dirt a little on the high side anyways. Those vents looks VERY close to the ground level. The rain is likely to splash the soil on your house and having the dirt level to the vents means you've left no room for mulch and anything else that will build on top of that soil. I would grade is down and put a small swale a few feet away from the house to let the high ground drain into that and around the house instead. You may have already done that. Slope is hard to tell on camera.
