Love the choices on the title and grout. It will be new but it doesn't have to jump out at every one saying it's new. That is one of the neat things about restoring in stead of making it look all new 2021 keeping some of 1899 charm. So much fun to watch. 🙋🏼‍♀️👍

Love those tiles! Please make sure that the flue in the fireplace is cleaned out. Since the house is so old, you don't know if and when it has been cleaned. Better safe than sorry! I know you two are handy, but since you never had a fireplace it's good to know. I love seeing your posts ❣️

My opinion copy the old pattern on hearth including cut tiles to size for border. As a lover of old style I don't think you should make a permanent feature too modern.❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️

@@ElysiaEnglish I agree. I started with your camper renovation because I've been wanting to buy a camper and do the same thing, and I've noticed so much growth and I'm so proud of you both and I feel like I'm part of your family just from watching all of this. It's so great. Also I don't know how long Phil has been renovating with you or on camera but I could see the growth in him and I just love how happy you both look.

When building your cabinets around the fire place, you might want to consider an area contained within the cabinet next to the fireplace for firewood storage/stacking.

Oh that would be a great way to balance the two sides :)
@annaryan4803

It would also be a way to make sure you have dry wood, no matter the weather outside. On one side of the fireplace you could have a place for kindling, and on the other side of the fireplace, firewood.
@poodlegirl55
@poodlegirl55 3 жыл бұрын
I was going to suggest that also. Since there are two different widths on either side it might be a way to make it look intentional if the smaller side had cabinet doors and the larger had wood storage.

@tammypierce7132
@tammypierce7132 3 жыл бұрын
Can you imagine the time and money it would take to do that? They would have to find restoration items from the period or have them made and they already have to wait months for their kitchen supplies and may not have a kitchen until Christmas. It would be way too costly and time consuming plus not practical for a growing family. It’s going to be beautiful when they are finished. The original aesthetics of the house won’t change...at least what wasn’t already changed when they bought it.
@Marzeonthego
@Marzeonthego 3 жыл бұрын
@@tammypierce7132 It actually doesn't cost any more. They would basically be repairing what needs repairing anyway. Example would be the hearth....the majority of tiles are fine, it is just the edges that are broken. Just replacing those would be less time consuming / expensive than tearing them up, buying all new tile and grout etc. I understand WHY she is redoing it..it is not her asthetic. It's just a shame so many of the original elements, ( of which many are ALREADY gone) will be lost.
@sharong8511
@sharong8511 3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s a shame to change the fireplace tiles. Simply replacing the border tiles would allow the original tiles to remain. Just my opinion.
@tammypierce7132
@tammypierce7132 3 жыл бұрын
@@Marzeonthego A full restoration of the house would take a lot of money. If you’re talking just about the fireplace maybe not so much. Do we know if those fireplace tiles are original? If the house is 122 years old they very well may have been replaced at some point through the years. I think some people want this to be a restoration channel. There are plenty of those they can watch if they want. Here they are watching a renovation. The black fireplace and dark tiles will not go with how she is styling the house. If she would keep them as is, to restore the whole room for that period, she would have to find vintage wallpaper like some she has peeled off the wall or a reproduction. That just isn’t her style.

Hi Elysia - the square metal item in front of your fireplace is called a fender in Ireland & in the UK. In Irish & British Victorian Houses, fenders are always the same shape as the tiled area - ie rectangular & without a solid bottom piece. I've never seen a square one before & to me it looks odd because it's solid black base obscures so much of the tiled area. I had a Victorian House with 6 original fireplaces & after 100 years, some of the tiles were cracked & a little scorched so I think you should double check that your tiles are heat resistant before purchasing them. I think a hearth made from a solid piece of slate (to tie in with the black/grey decoration) or marble (to tie in with the black/grey decoration or even the base red colour of the fireplace) would work better than individual tiles, which are difficult to keep clean - particularly the grout between the tiles. Your living room fireplace will clean up really well if you use a liquid stripper & wire wool & I advise doing that before you choose your hearth as the colours will be so much brighter when cleaned. I'm also not sure that the solid fire screen is from the same period as the fire place & it is also not grand enough for the main living room. In Irish & British Victorian houses, it is more common to see a larg, decorative lattice work fire screen, which follows the outline of the hearth & comes up to the same height as the fire opening. Typically, such screens would be used in isolation i.e. you wouldn't have a fire fender & a fire screen. The main point of having a lattice work fire screen is to allow the warm glow of the flames to be seen, while still maintaining the safety element. There are lots of images on-line to give you ideas. Given the potential for horse play of your 2 boys & 3 dogs, I'd definitely recommend one of these high decorative screens. Most come in a brass finish so would tie in nicely with your gold coloured hardware. There are so many decisions to make at this stage that it might be worth buying software, which allows you to create different decorative schemes for your rooms before committing to any purchases. I also recommend that you consider the impact of the winter light on your colour scheme when deciding on colours - decisions, decisions

I’d do the tiles in the same layout that’s there now, especially if you are keeping the mantel that you said you liked the shape of. You might want to do some testing on the fireplace surround to determine if it is REAL marble. It was quite common at the time this house was built to use a different type of stone that was cheaper (slate? soapstone? I can’t remember which) and faux paint it to look like marble.

Oh my goodness!!! Living room goals! So beautiful! I love how u show the process! Need more videos like this one. I’d say white or an off white for fireplace or if u could some how do a really light aged grey color that almost looks white. I can’t even wait to see this redo! It’s going to be absolutely stunning!!!! This house needs its own magazine.

Also, I get why at times you explain to the viewers why you have your process, but just know that this is your journey and no matter what anybody says, I appreciate that you stick with what works for you. And I completely understand why you did the porch first above and beyond the fact that it was crumbling but also it's very apparent that you guys love to be outside. It was like having a living space outside immediately that's finished. I love it!

I suspect that you have a dropped ceiling in living room and that if you had a look you may find some original crown molding up there. Might be fun to have a look. Drill a hole and sign a flash light up there. Love your channel!

You definitely could be right! For some reason at some point in history people decided that low ceilings seemed cozier and they dropped them down from 12'.

@@missmichelle652 it was all about the cost of heating these old homes. Beautiful large rooms. With very high ceilings and large windows , meant heat sat up near the ceilings and those windows even with storms, were cold. The entire house was cold. Drafty. I grew up in one! So they dropped the ceilings. Especially when oil heat and electricity became very expensive. Like in the 1970s/80s. It is also why later generations covered wood floors with carpet. The floors were cold and loud.

@@DreamsSketcher Yes so true! Now they want to build high ceilings again and tear out carpet for wood and tile floors. Way too cold for me! I’d hate to see the electric bills on some of those new homes with high ceilings and wood floors. We don’t have high ceilings and our electric bills are getting outrageous.

@@tammypierce7132 our ability to seal, insulate, and encapsulate homes is so different, and efficient. Old windows can be restored, sealed and insulated to do as good of a job as new vinyl windows. Insulation in walls, around windows and doors, in attics, in floors..these rooms can be beautifully warm and energy efficient. There is no reason anymore to have low ceilings and wall to wall carpeting, thank goodness.
