Really enjoying your journey Ryan and seeing your thought process as your look to focus on those things in life that bring you and your family joy. Nice add w/the consideration for chaps building your house. Regardless of whether they are being paid or not, the fruits of their labor and diligence will remain in and with the house long after they depart as will the respect shown them. I suspect that, that consideration may be a good start to a blessed home. At least it cant hurt!

500,000 baht seems to be about right in the farming areas of Issan for just the house of that size. Ours is similar size and came in about 650,000, but we decided to make the attached car park into an outside kitchen and eating/entertainment area after the house was done. Of course, we didn't have to purchase land for the build as it was on the existing farm, which would have added 200,000 - 400,000+ baht more. If you are in a larger area, they tend to run well over 1 million baht due to local costs. Looking good! The blend of the bamboo and the new house will provide a unique environment in which to live. Well done!

You have the benefit of alot of modern materials, which were not available 15 years ago when we built our Thai house. In more recent times I have been using these more modern materials to modernise and update our house; using cline and plasterboard for false ceilings, etc. Mind you the downside of this is steel etc is much thinner now as it costs more so its not as strong. Other thing I have noticed is wood is unaffordable for building now and is largely replaced by concrete houses and cement based materials that look like wood, which are more durable anyway (termites don't eat cement!). The traditional wood which is termite resistant is old teak (our bed is made of teak); but that is mega expensive unless you have teak on your land and can get someone to cut it for you.

Maybe I can hire you for a few days to film at my house when it gets finished. I think its a 4 hour drive from your area. We won't be able to leave the states until the end of next summer :( We already built a small teak house which mom lives in now because we demolished her house to build a new modern one. It's looking great. I know it was done out of financial necessity but I like that you built a number of structures vs one large home. The small compound/ village effect will be much more enjoyable and practical once you complete your builds. I am arriving in Thailand in just over two weeks from now for the first time and can't wait to start exploring that beautiful country.

For basic things (as a farang/barang learner) I found there is some mutual intelligibility. I learned Khmer in Cambodia at a very basic level and was able to use it in Buriram with some tweaks. But I agree Cambodian television language or formal language is hugely difficult to understand. For basic stuff like saying Hi, shopping and ordering food it just requires a little bit of mental transliteration just like Thai to Isaan Lao does.
