Hey Noah, I'm going to try your wood sealing method of a combo of BLO, paint thinner, and wax. I've seen some recipes that either substitute silicone for the wax or just add it in addition to....I can't remember. What do you think? Does that make sense to you?

I'd leave the silicone out.

I have a friend who is currently trying to get a permit to build a simple 4 cornered carport in front of his garage door. It's a nightmare. All the neighbors around him have to be asked if it's ok with them and at least one complained about it after being asked. He has submitted more than necessary to get the permit and then it was deferred to the 'June meeting.' It's a load of crap plain and simple. If someone buys a piece of land, why do they need permission to build on it? Especially if it's not an urban area.

Great video. Please don't give local Governments an out for usurping our money, freedoms and power. I'm as old as you and you are spot on correct to challenge the expansion of Government over our individual freedoms like home building. I'm a self employed contractor for Govt agencies. When you mentioned covering their costs to generate your permits, it reminded me of listening to county employees complaining about their time in a freedom of information request. Exclaiming they should pay for their time. My thoughts, we need a reality check. Our taxes already pay their salaries, great benefits and pensions. This concept of paying for their time is absurd and dependent on us gullible enough to accept this additional expense (Just another tax) as something we haven't paid for already.

I completely understand the authority issue. Your land, build what you want for yourself.

In Sweden the building code has a lot of requirements brought on by the UN "Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities". It basically has a lot of prescriptive measurements to make every home livable with a wheelchair which is a good thing. Sadly it limits the creativity for building anything really small.

The really nice thing about it though is when the person is 60 and losing mobility. You don't have to worry about the housing and suddenly becoming inaccessible or dangerous for someone who just needs a walker. You also don't have to worry about sudden accidents or things like I temporarily have no mobility because of a necessary surgery because you can use a temporary tool to work around that

Such an infuriating topic. Yes there's a need for building codes, especially for public buildings. And even for private property, many owners and buyers and sellers want the quality assurance. It just shouldn't be mandatory. You should be able to opt out and deal with whatever consequences come with it. If it requires putting up physical markers to inform anyone who enters, "this house may or may not meet code", so be it.

I live in a 1923 home that was built by a family that owned a local shipyard. The residence has a original one car garage. They built the garage doors at the shipyard out of 1 inch thick cypress tongue and grove and a 2 inch thick mortise and tenon frame. They even have double-glass ship port holes as windows. When I did major renovation to the garage the city engineers would not accept the doors. I had to install interior tie down rods for wind load calculations as if the building had no doors. Cost me a few thousand extra dollars to preserve the history. Those doors are 3 times better made than any new door.

If you're doing it yourself and can get away with it scott free? Is that even a serious question? Of course you don't get a permit.
