Marvellous! Greetings and appreciation from England. My grandfather was a cabinet-maker and the appreciation of wood (if not the capability to work it with skill) has been passed down to me. So I loved watching the deft way that things took shape, but particularly your measuring and marking first. It's not just a technical skill either - this work was a work of art. 'Measure twice, cut once' was one of my father's favourite maxims, and while its applicability to your work is questionable (I can see you don't need it) it's useful for me whenever I'm making anything. Thank You.

Definitely like the idea of using the fiberglass more effectively than with the typical cedar strip canoe, but I got to say that was the smallest freeboard I've ever seen on a canoe. You are undoubtedly more experienced than I am, yet just watching you paddle got my heart in my throat.

Hi Rich these are pack canoes which are designed to be extremely lightweight and minimal. I use the same system to build much larger canoes as well. I should have a similar video for large canoes coming out soon

I built a car toppable row boat about ten years ago in my garage. I've regretted selling it, but now have a vintage cedar and canvass canoe. I have carved all of my own paddles. I been thinking about making a Geodesic boat for quite a while. They are skinned with heat shrinkable Dacron instead of fiberglass and epoxy resin, which makes them several pounds lighter. You have to pay attention to detail, but skin on frame is a great way to make a great water craft.

Thank you Brian for the whole series of videos over the past number of months on this canoe project. I bought the canoe course this past week and plan to build in the spring when our New England winter is over and I can take over half of the garage for a workshop. This fall I finished my first SOF canoe - a 13.5' 2-person double paddle design by Hilary Russell. Yours will be a solo packboat to take camping in the Adirondacks. Take Care, Wayne

Great job! since you already have that back brace cross member it would be easy to make a replacement which has dual dagger boards and make sailing more large water friendly., less cross wind problems.

I've done exactly that, check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXaQi5SgrKp6l5o (Part 14 of my canoe building series if that doesn't work) I personally like the simplicity of weight steering and no dagger, but it's easy to do if you want to..

Lovely. One thing that interests me is how resilient the cloth is to puncture from sharp rocks, twigs etc. I assume it's far stronger than it looks.

You built some beautiful canoes! Thanks for sharing! I got my canoe sailing plans from a Ben Hunt book ( Crafts and hobbies?) and used thick bamboo for mast and boom. and used one lee board made from pine attached with a removable thwart and steer with a canoe paddle. Ideally the leeboard is mounted under the center of effort of the sail and for that reason I would like to change to a lateen sail design to get the center of effort closer to the center of the boat. Your sail mount looks like it will turn the boat down wind. Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake, NY has a nice collection of sailing canoes ( some pics on line).It has the Sairy Gamp, a ten and one -half pound canoe.

Cool, and I start to think of something a little larger, with a V-8 and hydrofoils. Been watching the refit of Tally Ho recently, and not being rich I think about something that floats but will get me to town and back quicker than the truck will. Okay, no V-8, but an adaptation of a Quad four, w/ 5 speed gear box and a surface piercing prop or two would be interesting.

I like it! Built ceader strip canoes for 17 years myself. Ya know a Minnesotan has little to do in winter except shovel snow and build something. For me it was canoes. Although your canoes are beautiful I'd worry about the thin skin bouncing off rocks.
@capefalconkayak5 жыл бұрын
Skinboats can be really fragile or really tough depending on what the covering is. I use a 9 oz nylon and coat it with three heavy coats of 2 part polyurethane. That particular combo is stronger than a normal lay up strip boat. Punctures aren't impossible but pretty rare. To give an example, I lost a double in the surf about a decade ago, it had the 12 oz skin on it, so a little tougher. It filled with water washed around a corner, and then rolled up and down a barnacle rock slope for a whole tide cycle until I was able to get it back. Everything metal on deck (rudder fishing poles etc) was obliterated, and the skin was rubbed pretty raw in a few places but no punctures, one rib inside was broken. I also got caught on a barbed wire fence paddling in a flood once with a normal lay up boat, wicked scratch but no puncture. It's not indestructible but tougher than it looks.
