This is Part 49 in the how-to-build series for constructing the Affordaplane ultralight or experimental aircraft. This is a plans-built Part 103 ultralight aircraft that is easy to build. Our goal is to make experimental aviation affordable and bring more people into flying and building their own aircraft.
In this part, we show how to rig the cables that brace the tail and fuselage components.
The complete video series is available for purchase (on a USB thumb drive) at HomebuiltHELP.

Loved it Jon! The plane looks even better in person, all your meticulous work has come together very nicely. Of course I'm looking forward to Episode #50 - I got to help with the weight part of the final equation so that gives me even more incentive to watch!

I would like you to consider posting videos of the flight tests. Many builders get the services of a test pilot who could provide you with a squawk list after the first flights. Again, thanks for making this series!

I agree. Because this is a Part 103 aircraft, it may help others to see how proper testing should be done. While a test pilot should be used, there is nothing illegal about doing the testing yourself, and showing how it should be done would be beneficial. Not to mention it would be the logical conclusion on this series.

Cables are used on the landing gear on my Challenger. As they loosen, we just twist the cable a few turns to tighten them a little.

It may not matter much, but I think the 45 bends on the tang should be closer to the bolt instead of centered on the tang. That way there will only be tension on the bolt and less leverage trying to bend it.

Hi Jon. Do we get to seeing you fly your Affordaplane in part 50. It would be good if you could film the preflight tests and then the first hops and the first circuit. Hope it all goes well. Good luck.

Much better to melt holes through fabric than drill them. Far less chance of the fabric beginning to unravel.

Hi Jon. So this is the penultimate video for this series. I am very concerned that as soon as part 50 is released there will be a short period where we will be able to view these pearls of wisdom and then it will be lost for ever for us when Utube takes them down. I want to be able to refer to your videos when I start on my own A Plane. Do I need to save these videos on a device where they will be safe for future use, or can I just leave them on my phone as they are now. Please let me know what you would do if you were to be in my shoes. Thanks a lot for a most informative and interesting series of videos. I am looking forward to part 50 and also your preflight taxi tests and of course the maiden flight. Please show us how it goes so as we can see how it's done. Thanks again for a great series, and all the best for the first flight.

I would consider two tangs on the under wing wire brace, one forward, one rear of the wing tube supports, rather than the two hole tang, thus avoiding an unnatural twist motion ~

Very nice, Jon. If next time is the construction conclusion, do we get to see you fly it? By the way, I’m curious about which tool that you use to cut your 1/8” aircraft cable. Do you have a tool which you would recommend?

Since you're an experienced builder and pilot, you no doubt have plenty of beer in the fridge so as to have backups in case further rigging adjustments are necessary?
