working on an engine on a stand is an absolute dream compared to bending over or laying around on the ground underneath the car. I've done my timing belt in the car, and also dropped the trans and changed the clutch under the car. Now I have my whole engine and trans out of the car, and it's so much easier.

I build my 2012 Mazdaspeed3 engine from bare block to handle 500hp. Using Mazda edit software , I tune it on RON100 pump gas to just 310hp/470Nm@1.2bar. That was 3 years ago and many smiles for miles with zero issue and still counting. I up grade the air filters , top mount intercooler+plumbing , HPFP , BPV, downpipe, pistons+con rods, valve springs+seals, injector seals , main bearings, head+girdle bolts , balance shaft+EGR+cat delete , solid rear motor mount. Still on stock turbo+manifold and cams. Stock intake manifold+throttle body. Stock piston+valve size. Stock resonators and silencers. Stock passenger+driver motor mounts. Stock flywheel+clutch. Honestly I can't never been happier with many others 300hp Speed3 with stock internals tend to blow up when they up the boost and driven hard. It's the high torque that will punch a hole through the block. If I was to upgrade the turbo+manifold , I wud probably tune it to 380hp - 420hp on pump gas with the core foundation has been properly set up.

So happy to get to see it happen. Couldnt of hoped for more. For those of us who have built engines before, it's time investing! Let alone video recording and editing such a slick assembly compilation. This is awesome you could probably do so much with this engine. I'm a little concerned with the crank being able to handle high boost though. In theory it should but who knows. That's the thing I don't know of anyone else that has run the level you might intend on it. Is there anyone else running upper 400's whp on them? If not I'm worried that it might be intended for natural aspirated builds (all out n/a builds) hense the cast material. Don't get me wrong cast cranks can still make 400+whp. But my thinking is it shares the same counter weight design as the forged cranks and we know that it's not favorable for high RPM's. All I *know* for sure is the M-motorsports crank is cast however the metal alloys used is supposed to be better than the OEM Miata one. The better design at the nose of the crank (will help mains). In theory I think it should be good for what you made before but I just don't know for sure I'm just worried since nobody else has committed their build to the unknown like you'd be doing. It's awesome 👍

Great video Greg, just one thing to be mindful of with the sump and windage tray. When ever I have put one together, I put a spread out amount of RTV on one face, nice and flat and the mating face I do a small bead of it, but I let it semi cure a bit first. The idea is, that when you screw it up, the sandwich effect is less and has a larger thickness of the RTV sealing it, it then is less prone to chunks of it being on the inside of the engine where heat and oil can see some bit break off. I had a workshop do a diesel engine build for me a few years ago when I didn't have the space or time at home to do it myself for my tow car. Sadly, they put way too much on, didn't let it cure and at 100kms, I dumped the oil (even though they said 1000kms) and I always cut the oil filters in half to have a look. I found chunks of Utra Grey permatex in my filter 😬 I kept the filter for a few thousand kms thinking I might need it 😉 Well, 500kms into my run in procedure I had both cams pop their caps and valve to piston hit. Complete engine failure obviously. Luckily they guy who was doing the work for me was incredible and I showed him the first filter photos and he took responsibility straight away. It would appear that gasket goo blocked oil gallery's into the head either seized a cam bearing which broke the cam, or not enough oil cooling and the valve guides and a valve got stuck and the piston came up and hit it, then the cam tried to push down a seized valve and couldn't move it and pushed the cam straight up out of the retaining bearing caps. It is such an easy thing to overlook with RTV, but I have always thought about it, then it ended up happening to my engine.... Lol. I have always done my own work because I think like you, when it is our own car, we take a lot of time and care to the best we can in our quest for engineering excellence 😊👍 Just thought I'd share that with you mate as I saw you put it on. It didn't look like excessive RTV though, but the squish is always something I pay attention to. I was 300kms from him and home and he immediately got me towed from the middle of nowhere at his expense, bought me a brand new OEM Nissan long block engine direct from Japan and fitted it all back into my car as a way to make things right and say sorry. Amazing customer service and things happen and it was not even him who screwed the engine together. The positive is I have a brand new engine that has now never seen EGR or a Cat, did the run in and tuned it with all my mods put back on and even has ARP stud kit, mains and rod bolts right from new, it should last me a very long time now. 350hp 3.0L diesel with 780nm on the richest fuel delivery at 30psi of boost, but I don't lay into it on that tune, EGT'S can get to 700c pretty quickly 😊.
