Those little coops will serve well for chicken jails, chicken hospital, introducing new flock members, brooders and grow out pens, etc. once you get your larger coop built.

Maybe an awning would work, keep snow and rain out but allow better ventilation. The idea is to keep wet and wind out. They will easily handle the cold. There will be many uses for those after the bigger coop is built next year.

I built a couple (fit 6 chickens with 2 nest boxes) out of weatherboard (tongue and groove). Stained it before I built them so all nooks and crannies are stained. I have 6 roosters and 8 hens (soon to be one or two roosters and 8 hens) so more than enough room. I love your new step up to reach the back yard!

Hello . if you put the 2 chicken coops both along the fence of the goats opposite each other with the distance between 2 chicken runs, then you put the same fence of the goats on the outside against it nice and long you can use it again, and you put another length on top of it as a roof with some tyreps for temporary and your run is closed on both sides and with a roof against predators. just an idea. with kind regards Hollandduck from the Netherlands

I was thinking the same thing about the open windows. Good idea to have shutters keep out the snow and rain. Can you put the perches across the back wall that is opposite the little door with the lame latch? It seems like it would make more sense to be on the side without the door to the outdoor pen. That turned out pretty cute - like a mini version of a sturdier, real coop. Nice design.
@RoseThistleArtworks4 жыл бұрын
I was surprised how small they are, but then I thought that the smaller space, with all the chickens huddled in for the cold night, would warm up faster and keep warmer. Knowing that it is only for night time security, and they will be free ranging during the day, it makes sense to have the actual coop area be small.

I have 18 chickens and three little store-bought coop inside a large fenced in area. One day all of the chickens slept in the same coop (The smallest one) and they broke the tray floor. The ramp most likely won't stay on. I leave the cheap ramps off and the chickens get in/out fine.

If they get you through the winter, then they've done their job. It stinks to sink money into something that is just going to be temporary, but what you bought was time...time to get a "real" one built. So, well worth it, imo.
@HoneyHollowHomestead4 жыл бұрын
I agree, they are not meant for long term housing. I bought one several years ago because I needed something in a hurry, like you. But I did take the time to paint all the wood, hoping it would extend it's life. I barely got a year out of it. The first thing that went was the roof, and then the nesting boxes started falling apart. I will say that the fencing part lasted the longest and I was even able to repurpose that part of the coop. They are definitely not meant for long term use.

I bought an off the shelf coop. They are not husky proof. Lost all the chicks except for one. Bought a couple rolls of hardware cloth and used heavy duty staples and recovered the run. Took a couple of 2x4's and covered the holes he made. Also put strips of bent hardware cloth on the 2x4's and left the ends pointy. It's now not only raccoon proof it's husky proof.
@fossil48734 жыл бұрын
Regarding leak-proofing the hinged roof for the nesting boxes... I copied a lot of your design for the suburban coop, but rather than worrying about that I made the roof permanent and hinged the wall beneath it instead. That works well with the nesting boxes higher off the ground but obviously wouldn't be so great for something this low to the ground.

We ended up building “horse style” stalls in the barn to house ours. First stall has 25 ish big girls with rooster, second has brooder with 28 more. And Mrs wanted to incubate some eggs for first time. Just did small batch and looks like five good ones due a little before Xmas. It’s a lot of hard work starting from scratch, but you can use what you learned from the past to make something even better.

Thank you for sharing your journey! I've really enjoyed going back and watching your videos over the last year or so since I subbed. But I was really surprised, with your building knowledge, that you didn't do a simple walk-in style hoop coop of cattle/combo/hog panel. Probably could have put 1 to 2 together for the chickens in the same amount of time (maybe not, not sure), certainly for less $$ spent. Variety of roof types (tarp, green house plastic, green house panels, wood strips (?), tin, galvanized steel), variety of base(s)/supports - tucking the hoops between trees, put on a wooden frame, between T-posts... Guessing these were simply because of the time of year and wanting to get settled, but still a little surprised. The coops you did do will make nice enough chicken isolation spots, brooders or what ever you want to use them for in the future. Could even be raised, put on PT wood base for tractors. Your "review" was a little tongue in cheek in the end, LOL!! Do you know what type of predators you are facing there yet? Looking forward to your next building projects, as you work through the Holidays! Again, thank you for sharing and may your family be blessed this Holiday season.
@SSLFamilyDad4 жыл бұрын
My orginal plan was to do a cattle panel hoop covered in a tarp or plastic. The issue is predators, raccoons, fox, possum, They all would tear through that so I would need to cover it in hardware cloth, then plastic, have had to build some wood paneling for the back. More time, cost, planning and I just didn't have the time. Now I do though and I am planning to build something better over the winter/spring
@paulahoffman82304 жыл бұрын
@@SSLFamilyDad Thank you for for your answer and sharing that. Yes, I also use wire either over the top of the hoops (originals used chicken wire)or on newer ones on the inside to make it easier to use a tarp, future plan a combo of HC and 2x4" wire. Yes, it does take a bit more time - last build I had our granddaughters helping zip tie and we did 2 - 4x8' (single CP) coops that are "permanent" (used t-posts to hold hooped panels instead of building a wood base). I used pallets, but have already had those wear out a bit and being all different sizes that creates a bit of an issue if need to replace. When re-do, I will see how I make those again... But the little ones are going into 3rd season. Looking forward to seeing your new coop(s)!! Happy Holidays to your family.

Thanks so much for posting this Todd. I was pricing out building my own using your free plans and the lumber was so expensive I decided to just get a used one on Facebook Marketplace. After seeing you put this together though I will definitely be reconsidering buying the lumber and making one myself that is sturdy and long lasting! Seems like a better investment (and I have all winter to prepare). The store bought one is much smaller than I expected after seeing the chickens inside. God bless you brother.

I know you were pressed for time to go this route, but it will work well for the chicks for a few months. For your bigger breeds, not sure who would laugh more the raccoons or the chickens! (I'd set up electric netting asap to keep the predators from testing out the structures) But the birds will make it work fine in winter, they bunch up anyways and some sleeping in the nest boxes can be forgiven & you can always shore it up with plywood & straw bales if it doesn't stay warm enough with the big snows you are sure to get. You can give them extra covered space in plastic dog houses with straw during the day as well. My fat girls would break these coops the first day too :) You're such a great builder I know whatever you decide to build them will be awesome. :)

When it is cold, wouldn't the smaller space and chickens together at night, stay warmer for them? Sounds like they will be out free ranging once they know where their coop home is, so it's not like they live in there 24/7.
