Building the Custom Titanium Hardtail of my Dreams

Back in July when I officially became sponsorless, I started thinking about exactly the bike I wanted for the first time in years. I knew I wanted a titanium hardtail, but nobody made the exact geometry I really preferred. The reach was always too long, or the size small had some bend in the seat tube that would prevent my dropper post from being inserted the whole way.
That’s when I realized that “zero-compromise” would mean having a custom frame built. So I started my conversation with Sage, who makes built to order titanium frames out of Oregon. Not only did I get the exact geometry that I wanted, but also a custom paint job. I was against painting the titanium at all from the start, but they won me over with a custom Cerakote scheme that covers only the rear of the bike.
I also picked out all the parts for this bike. Some companies I had contacts at, and I was able to get a discount or even a free part. But back when I started my orders, many companies were fresh out of stock, and so I needed to pay full retail sideways to get the parts in time. Had I compromised and taken parts that were available, or parts I could get for free, it would have been just that-a compromise.
Now that the bike is finished, I’m really wondering how it rides! I took it down a dirt road while lugging around a bunch of cameras to get the finished shots, and then promptly got sick. Next week I’ll ride the bike in all sorts of different conditions, and then go into more detail about the geometry!

I’m just glad you went this way instead of “this season I’m going to ride an entry-level budget bike” and then pop up with a $4000 bike. I’ve unsubscribed to at least two channels for that. I admire nice bikes, but I don’t like being told stuff that costs more than my car is entry level. Custom bikes are worth what you’re willing to pay and are awesome.

I recently bought by most expensive bike ($6000 CAD) on sale for $4200. They salesman referred to it as dirt cheap. Disgusted me. I lost an entire nights sleep debating if I should drop that kind of cash and spent hours justifying it, Couldn't believe the Spec I wanted (marzocchi and fox float with deore drivetrain) was in that price bracket, but figured I deserved it as I have made my way after years of ridindg 90's bikes and other entry level modern bikes. It cost almost as much as my ATV and this guy called it dirt cheap. really rubbed me the wrong way, however Im happy with the bike but we are getting way to comfortable calling these bikes cheap or entry level.

I work at a bike shop and whenever we have brake hose rattling in the frame we wrap a zip tie around it and leave the tail uncut, so when you push it into the frame it pushes against the sides and stops the rattling.

I built up a titanium bike this summer myself, as my Bafang mid drive killed the bottom bracket shell on my old specialized hardrock. New bike specs are pretty sick too: the frame is a Carver 96'er, drive train is a BBSHD mid drive pulling a Shimano Alfine 8 hub, riding on a rockshox recon 100mm fork, with TRP spyre cable brakes. The thing is a beast on the road or trails, and the split wheel size (26" rear, 29" front) is a lot of fun. Get well soon Seth!

It reminds me of the simpler times when we had so many choices of home grown high end frames and parts. I've been collecting ultra rare custom parts from the glory days to assemble my dream bike. I have to say that this inspires me to crank of few of them out. I can for sure build the 90's equivalent to your bike. If I had an unlimited budget though. This is exactly what I would build. Miss my titanium, it rode so well, I got talked into selling it and buying a yeti ultimate. Mistake, sold it within six months. Had a fuse carbon, but someone cut the lock of my garage and walked away with all the bikes inside. I’ll see what I can afford next summer. Awesome bike, thanks for the video

Deeply cool build.Back in the mid 90s I had a Raleigh Torus Titanium with a set of Marzocchi DH3 "downhill" forks with a whopping 3"(lol) of travel.I took off the bar ends, put on a Club Roost riser bar and that bike did everything.Titanium is the best,I`d have another Ti frame in a heartbeat if I could afford one.

Holy mother of god. $13,000 is a lot for a hard tail but I’m glad you got to build the perfect bike for you👍🏼

Hey Seth! No idea if your gonna read this, but I love your videos and have been rewatching my favorites, the construction ones, a lot lately. It got me thinking; would you consider making something like a lodge of simple planks? What I mean is- Imagine a little house. Id say… about a 4 meter wide, 6 meter long box. Now imagine a large opening from the back, and one in the front, with the trail going right through it. Make it kind of a check-point. Kinda like what the Sick-Nick table was on Berm Creek. Make the little house big enough for you to hang out in, maybe store some snacks or drinks in a cooler, while also just being a cool attraction. Maybe include a different path that puts you on TOP of the house, and then you can go back down it for even MORE power and speed. Idk… I’m not really a biker, but I love your videos and I had this idea I wanted to share.

Your new bike looks great, and titanium is a perpetually cool material in an industry that leapfrogged it and went straight to CF. But I'd need it to have a rear shock. I've never ridden a hardtail that I didn't wish were full-suspension. I admit hardtails' classic double-triangle geometry is...well...classic, and aesthetically pleasing, and the acceleration is very direct, but riding over a single tree root is enough to remind me why full suspension is better. A suspension fork is useful for avoiding breaking your wrists on a hard landing, but it's too far away from the seatpost to do anything useful for the vast majority of your weight. And before anyone mentions a suspension seatpost, they don't do any good if you're standing. Regarding the titanium cranks, PLEASE tell me you applied anti-seize compound to that large bolt before installing it. Titanium cold-welds like nobody's business, and without anti-seize you may never get that bolt out again. *EDIT:* Oh good, you did. I see the anti-seize at 3:48. When you said the bike cost over $12,000, I nearly shat myself. The most I've ever spent on a bike was a third that much, and that was a Christini AWD bike.

Dope. Also have connections to the Blur Ridge, paint is awesome. Looking forward to seeing the easter eggs. Perfection is often a matter of the eye of beholder and IMO this is it for a trail HT. Nicely done! Feel better soon, hopefully it's over and done quick for you.

Titanium has insane properties. I have a titanium hammer, and I thought my nail was missing its mark the first time I used it. So much less reverb then steel. My shoulder was killing me, and that's why I fianally coughed up the money. I didn't believe the hype until I got one. It absorbs so much more stress then steel.

Definitely a sick looking bike man n congrats on finally building ur dream bike. I would love to get into mountain biking or cross country. I've even thought about giving a road bike a try. I use to ride bmx all over my area n then the local park. I was never great at doing tricks but I just enjoyed being on a bike. I remember my 1st bike. I woke up Christmas morning and seen it next to the tree. I was so excited I didn't even bother getting dressed. I'll never ride a bike in the snow in my undies again.
