Every time I watch your videos I think of my Finish Grandparents. They Arrived in 1903. We still live on the old farm property. The old house burnt to the ground in the 40s. The old milk house is mostly standing. I've built log homes and should restore it. It would need moving but I wish I would get started! Thanks soo much!

1:52 Jessie is right. For a compression brace, the member runs from the top of the free end down to the base of the hinge side. That's the opposite of a tension brace, like a cable-stayed fence gate, that strings from the top of the hinge diagonally to the bottom of the free end.

@@Montana_Ranch_Rescue Haha, no worries. For a full panel door it's not going to make much of a difference as long as there are boards that tie the planks together in multiple directions. With all the clinched nails, I bet it'll last another century. It looks great! And the hardware looks awesome.

A job well done. What you have done is a true testimony to the history of the old West. Uncle Dan would have been proud. Nice fix for the front door lock! Like the tin can patches. The interior is very cozy. Nothing like cooking outdoors. I could taste the Johnny Cakes and the bacon, um-um. I salute you and your beautiful family. Bring on that cook stove!!

Th old square nails are rough to hammer but were smartly engineered and they held really well. It is a learned technique. The plate rack is great.

So enjoyed this video I was raised on a small farm we had a small herd of dairy cows we milked by hand my first job at a early age was to call the cows to the barn hearing you call them brought back fond memories

Ah man, love your comment. The cows are at their happiest out there, moving from pasture to pasture. Everything is still green right now. Love seeing them dotted out in the fields in the distance. Lots of hay stored up for winter.

Hi Jessie & Robbie🇺🇸, Great be seeing you guys came so far👀👍🏻, It`s a pleasure following the total restoration of uncle Bens Cabin, the Original old door looks great, Iv`e an little tip regarding te crack in the plank while you hamret the the nail there I did allways on the spot where I hamret the nail Hamer the nail head in a x in the plank and then hammer the nail in the middle of the x mark this solves the problem cracking the plank alternativ you can drill a little hole before the nail hamres,This video was a great adventure for.me.All the best wishes from Hubertus🙏🏻👍🏻🇳🇴🇳🇱☮🍀🇺🇸,The old patina outside the walls hs became a great old look. 👀

My daddy built a chicken house one time. It was about 8x8. The first good wind that came along out of the SW unrolled that thing out across the pasture. I hope you anchor your little house, because you put a lot of good work into it. Blessings,

Oooooohhh yikes, 😬 What a tragedy-I do have nightmares about that here 🤦🏻‍♀️ This little house is anchored pretty good to the giant wooden beams it sits on, but, I won’t lie it’s just hanging out on top of the stones. If a good tornado comes it’ll be exactly like Wizard Of Oz.

Trailer houses have screw in the ground tie downs. When my ancestors moved up on the High plains of Texas they dug cellars. The cellars always smelled damp, but they were a good place to shelve peach preserves, and they had a little bed down there to sit on. My granddaddy built one with the door at ground level. While us kids and women folk sat on that bed, my daddy and granddaddy would stand by the door and watch what was happening.

Excellent video! It's nice to see all the pioneer touches throughout this episode. The fieldwork is always good to see and reminds us where our food comes from! The Northern Lights were the icing on the cupcake...or cabin in this case! Well done! We were out in the Missouri Breaks recently and we heard the Elk bugling and the lights dancing overhead. Definitely! I realize now why cast iron is so good for open fire cooking-it spreads and evens out heat. Hard to cook things and not burn them 😂 (as my Johnny cakes prove)

oh wow, this was really magical. the cabin is looking absolutely great - a true mixture of old and new, I'm so looking forward to the future fun, and love all the special things in the cabin already - the bunk beds - amazing. Johnny Cakes - in Antigua they call their dumplings Johnny cakes (elsewhere in the carribean they're called just dumplings, it used to be a way of telling where someone was from if they said Johnny Cakes). I guess these originals without leavening were like them (you fry them and they're solid alright, but tasty with spicy fish and tomato stew). love the candles, spoon, and the lovely way you all are. what an amazing spot, the northern lights. how great the kids are starting to ask about your life/lives before - a wonderful moment of their universe expanding. pure magic thank you for sharing this with us random internet people. and well done - far from failing at anything you seem to me to persist and succeed.

Found your channel this morning & I'd like to say: Well Done! May I offer a bit of advice? When I was a young carpenter I bought one of those fiberglass handled hammers. Huge mistake. Every hammer strike transmitted vibration into my arm causing tendonitis. Do yourself a favor & replace it with a 24oz wood handled framing hammer. The wood handle will last, as long as you don't use it to pry with. A trick that I learned to prevent the wood splitting with modern nails, is to invert the nail & strike the tip with your hammer to blunt the tip, before driving it into the wood. Not sure why that works, but it does. Don't know if it would translate to those square nails.

@@Montana_Ranch_Rescue I prefer the wood hammer handles that have a curved profile like an ax. That curve will position your hand such that you can develop a "snap" that sinks a 16d nail with a single strike.

I was hoping that you guys had a good neighbor with his team of draft horses 🐎 help plant the wheet. There is next year to have a bunch come and do a plowing day with many teams of horses 🐎 with the ladies' cooking 🍳lunches. You could have even a hay day next summer ☀️ with a team of horses 🐎. I'm surprised you guys 😮don't have a team of draft horses 🐎 to help feed the cows 🐄. Great job 👍 👏 on the history of the old cabin. Why are you choosing not to insulate? My grandmother (b. 1895) said they insulated using sawdust and later newspaper….whatever they had available. Just curious.

I wonder if that's so prone to fire issues? dried out it'd go up in an instant? there's some R value in double wood walls isn't there?, but not as much as modern insulation for sure.

Yes true-they didn’t insulate originally. Vermin and mice tend to get into these old walls and wreak havoc.

Good question! We almost insulated with some old wool I got from a friend. It definitely would work and make the house much warmer in winter. Big reason we didn’t: MICE. Out in the grain fields here the mice will find a way into the walls and we didn’t want to create a messy warm spot for them down the road. But if we lived in this house everyday, you bet we’d stuff these walls with newspaper or sawdust or anything we could-it helps. I will say, double walls with air in between are warmer than you may think. 🤔 Lots of old homes (even nice ones) have just air.

May I ask why you could not put steel wool all along the perimeter of the house and then use wool for insulation?

@@diamondperidot Good question-mostly because I don’t trust the steel wool to last and keep away the torrent of mice in the fields 😆 I used it in lots of little holes around the house. I definitely helps. But… it’s not a magic material that will keep mice away. These are tough Montana mice 😉

Nice job on the renovation but to keep it authentic you need to restore the water source and privy. So what and where was the water source for Uncle Dan? A spring, creek or well. Were was the outhouse? I assume they were close by.

I hear you! The creek has always been and is close by. Because the ground the house sits on is so lush and good for farming, the plow has come right up to the edges of the house year after year. Any outhouse footprint is long gone 😔 But we can use our logic & figure it was on the East side, off the front door, and slightly out of the wind. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Long story: Yes! Great idea to bring it back! On the list 😉

Not being critical but your outside and inside boards are both parallel to one another and you have no diaginal bracing in the walls. Won't the wind play havock with the structure? My cabin I used verticle B and B siding on the outside and horizontal boards on the inside so I would have a good bracing effect against the wind. Also why is there no insulation? Just curious. Love the door hardware and the above candle fixture. Got to build me one of those. I'll bet that peach juice sure was good. The best biscuits and baked goods are done with lard. That is what I call a serious frying pan. Those children will never forget that night in the cabin...

You’re totally right on the bracing & wind sheer-this method is how the original pioneer did it & while it is not the best way, it will hold up pretty darn well in our climate and for our needs. But time will tell 😂 The old cabin may start to lean a little bit eventually (but then it’ll just look more authentic 😉)
