You know what would be nice to see in the future? One of the old wooden bridges connecting two disused roads, with a more "modern" metal-frame bridge right next to it, connecting two modern roads. The original bridge has become a historic landmark, and traffic has been diverted around it to preserve it.

A natural way to make roads is to avoid tree clusters. Roads often do that.

In my city, there is a tree growing in the middle of the road. It's not a roundabout. It's just a small patch big enough for the tree. Suffice to say, it forces people to slow down.

7:20 If you want realistic flood control without actually having stilt houses, look at Portsmouth, Ohio. The town is on the Ohio River, with several other rivers going through the town to flow into the Ohio. The area is prone to flooding, so the waterfront has a series of sea walls to prevent downtown flooding. It uses both fences and terrain to protect the city, although there is a riverside park in front of the walls.

The history of covered bridges is fascinating. Found this source stating US first covered bridge was built in Connecticut in 1804 by Theodore Burr. Named the Waterford Bridge, it spanned the Hudson River in New York and lasted for 105 years. You could pay homage to it calling you town “Waterford”. Sounds good 👌🏻

Some suggestions, when you're building suburbs, check out the Rivertowns (Hastings, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington) just outside NYC. They're great models for commuter train suburbs on a hillside. For small towns, you should create one kinda like Bedford/Pound Ridge in Westchester. Lots of very wealthy people and massive houses, but it feels like it should be in the middle of nowhere. And for a really small town near the mountains, look up North Conway New Hampshire, in the White Mountains. It's got this great old hotel that could be the centerpoint of the town once more assets get added.

I would love if you checked out Bremen, Ohio - huge freight trains goes through town twice a day (iirc) which is a really unique feature, and a lot of smaller factories in and around the village are getting repurposed and refurbished into these really nice little complexes, such as stores and it really shows off that quaint midwestern life off quite well. My grandparents live there and my grandmother has already redeveloped a little piece of land in the village centre into a sort of community events venue or park, so I think some nice detailing if something like the town were to be built in game is some repurposed land and buildings from long ago.

@@twodollarstwenty I'm so sorry for the late response, I accidentally didn't post my reply to your comment. Anyways, I sometimes drive past this beautiful rail bridge over the Raritan on the border of Hillsborough and Branchburg Townships: www.google.com/maps/@40.510913,-74.7272531,3a,75y,238.68h,102.23t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sQaAJK-fSH7qMnlGyKoV0UA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu It might be a bit rural for what you are building at the moment, so I'd also suggest looking at Division Street in Somerville. It is arguably my favorite place in the vicinity, especially during the holiday season. There is also the courthouse nearby which is also stunning. I don't know your plans for what you expect to build next, so if you want to ask for any more suggestions or learn about some of the history of the area, you can just contact me on discord, my tag is just "ethaboo". Such a lovely little town. I do hope at some point a mod or something stops the buildings in the middle of field (wish they either made them spawn around the edge or dirt tracks going to them) - and tbh, i would love just fields without having the main building so that it looks like a farm with many fields. They look good enough from a distance tho

If you're imagining this as a floodplain, you could add an oxbow lake, like on the Connecticut river. It'd be an interesting piece of terrain to build around, and it hints at some of the history of the how the river has changed over the years.

Not sure if anyone has said this but while you get odd shaped lots, in places where far,ing is common place, you’ll have rounded lots and lots affected by subdivision near rivers, however the vast majority are square/ rectangular at least in America. If you were to make farming the true industry here, there would many more, square lots for farmland.

This isn't the part of the Jersey suburbs you're directly modeling, but you should look at the part of Jersey directly south of the New York, like Highlands, Sandy Hook, etc. Especially when the harbor and bridge dlc comes out, these places could be really good inspiration if you want to addlight houses (they'll be part of that dlc)

This all looks amazing and remind me of some places around me! A couple notes/suggestions: check out towns like Madison which has a very nice residential area with a Main Street with shops and a train line and if you are doing farming that is usually more west, and south in NJ and the town closer to jersey city are hillier and more business and shopping focused so you can also check out areas like Clifton, Washington township, and Flemington for more farming! Great video as always and best of luck!

I think a corporate park would be a realistic addition to the more rural areas of the map, though I'm not too sure how hard that would be without lots of mods. They're usually close to the freeway and often have dedicated on/off ramps (something I find funny because massive apartment complexes often have clogged dinky intersections). For inspo check out Berkeley Height, NJ where Plainsfield Ave crosses Rt 78.

Since the town and its geography and likely history are dominated by the river, I'd suggest naming it after the river. The small towns north of NYC have a lot of England-derived names from what I can see on Google Maps, and there's a smattering of places with local features mentioned in the name (for some examples; Crotonville, named after the Croton River; Cross River, named after the Cross River; Goldens Bridge, named after a specific bridge that crosses a reservoir; several named after nearby lakes such as Peach Lake and Lake Carmel). Under these I'd suggest perhaps something like Lincoln River or Lincoln Bridge, with the river being called the Lincoln River; if you think another similar name for it suits it better use that instead, this is just an idea. Another common naming theme in the area is Native American words or names, for example Katonah is named after a local chief and it's believed that Mahopac means "big lake". I'm going to suggest something like "Wapisipee" (feel free to play around with the spelling), which I think could be a fairly accurate way that English-speakers could have butchered the phrase "white river" in the Munsee language, which was once spoken in the area (it isn't anymore unfortunately); "white river" in Munsee is "waapii siipuw".

I think it could actually be a good idea to build rural towns in areas you might develop in the future. A lot of modern day suburbs have historical city centers that used to be rural towns, so it would be interesting to see how the pre existing town and farms interact with the sprawling city.
